Ubben Expansion and Renovation

Thoughts:
1. As a recruit, how can you not want to spend time in this environment with elite coaches and a support system that will max your skill set as a player, student, and health? One would have to think twice before heading into the world of the NBA before getting the full benefits of preparation for it that can be provided by this Ubben staff and facility.
2. There will, of course, be great numbers of naysayers who question the commitment and focus of $ to the playing of a game....and it is a strong argument given the state of our planet. Yet, trying to achieve excellence in anything is and always will be prioritized differently by almost every entity. This board is for Illini basketball fans....I can't imagine a plethora of negative reactions but the major reaction should be many smiles...and many future victories. Yet, above all, there should be many lives, such as Myers Leonard and Ayo Dosunmu, changed and. as those to have done, effecting multitudes of others in positive ways.
3. To a recruit, this says loudly...at the University of Illinois, we will prioritize providing the ultimate opportunity in every way for you to become the best student/athlete you can be. Work hard, be an "everyday guy", and we will take care of you.
4. The technology, and to a lesser degree, the psychology of competing in sport has advanced beyond the comprehension of most of us. As a high school athlete gifted in two sports, I had to seek my future somewhere else other than the University of Illinois. My buddies went there, my heart was there, but my future dreams could not be fulfilled there. That is not the case today. Now my dreams include living long enough to see the Illini win the NC game.

Awesome facility, and great that we are back to having a competitive leg up in the facilities department again. It was needed. My only nitpick is also somewhat general to marketing/branding and college sports: the timing of a facility upgrade like this with the release of a newly branded color orange. I've seen this in multiple different contexts across official Illinois materials lately: the old redder orange mixed with the new orange (on the equipment, in the screenshot example), and even some seemingly different shades now and then. (That, plus the clash between the edgy, ultra-modern slant font/graphics with the new retro, bubbly font and social media graphics.) For having an awesome, brand-spanking-new facility and W after W for this Athletic Dept, the graphics is the one thing that looks a bit haphazard. It seems like we've been operating on two parallel courses for several years now (see: the basketball jerseys), with both being implemented simultaneously in different areas. This absolutely should be lower on the list of important to-dos when resurrecting an athletics program, but hopefully JW&Co can iron out these kinks in the coming years and erase some of the visual chaos / šŸ¤® that was left over from the Thomas era.

My thoughts:

* When Ubben was redone way back, it was considered cutting edge back then. Now, it looks like a coaching staff's Dreamworld. Recruits and their families will be overly impressed.
* Cannot emphasize when JW and BU discuss about nutrition, strength and conditioning, aquatic therapy, recovery, etc. That is part of their plan to each recruit and their families...now they can literally see it. Plus, it's gonna be way ahead of all other B1G programs.
* JW ain't going anywhere in the near future (poached or otherwise) unless he gets screwed over by the powers above.

100% agree on fixing these details, it makes zero sense that we are rolling out a new orange and built a new facility using the old.

Kinda like that old Illini font used on Memorial Stadiumā€™s press box facing Grange Grove - drives me nuts.

JW is being compensated very nicely. I love hearing Chester Frazier say "The recruits are calling us now," How things have changed.

You may be correct...and he would do a fabulous job.....but not sure they would want a commish with close ties to one of he B10 schools
It was said in jest but it would not surprise me if being the Big 10 Commissioner was offered to him at some point in his career. I don't see anyone better suited for it.

I sure we could trust that as commish JW would make for 100 years of nonsense by screwing tOSU, Michigan and PedoU at every opportunity

Whitman has done an amazing job for all sports as our AD.
Agreed- you can fault him for the Lovie hire - but you can't argue with the intent to make a splash and put Illinois football back on the map. It did lead us to where we are today, so all is well that ends well

I don't fault him for that hire. At the time is was a big, splashy hire with a lot of upside. It just didn't work out because it turns out Lovie is absolutely not a college coach (and if the Texans are any indication, maybe he's no longer an NFL coach).

But Whitman didn't hang on for 2 to 4 years past when it was clear a change was needed like previous ADs would do, and then he went out made a slam dunk of a hire (seemingly) in Bielema.

That charlatan is going to make (certainly not earn) tens of millions from us and Houston. His coaching has been outdated for two decades.

I think the Lovie name helped a lot with donations and boosters from the Chicagoland even though it didn't translate to the field.

What I heard multiple times is that the womenā€™s side is a mirror of the mens. If the mens is tops in the nation as they say then this must be one of the very best on the womenā€™s side. I hope that pays off with recruiting as I would love to see them at the top of the conference/nation where all Illinois sports belong. I think the new coach Shauna Green can get it done.

So far, so good.
