Slept on it, and still mad. Frustrating to lose to a team we know we're better than. And so tired of teams taking the Izzo approach of 'we can't compete with basketball skill, IQ and strategy, so we'll just beat them up'. And the whistles are contagious so the refs call ticky-tack stuff on us even though we foul less.
I feel the turning point was when Wagler went down and the rest of the team had an 'oh !!!!' look in their eyes, which coincided with the bruin comeback.

March Brad Underwood show’d up yesterday.

No adjustments

12-0 run by ucla, and no timeout called by Brad

Sit back and watch watch ucla do whatever they want on offense

Make no adjustments on offense and kept shooting 3s.

Losing this game just gave us a ceiling as a 3 seed. Meeting we lose in the sweet 16 or round of 32 again..
Obviously we want a better seed but I don't think there is anyone out there that we can't beat when we are hitting on all cylinders. There are a couple that I definitely feel we would have more problems with but this team is very capable of making it to the final four

When Brad makes a final 4 I will believe in him. Until then hes another Keady. He will win B10 games and a few titles but nothing in March

Why is the ceiling a 3 seed? Beat Michigan and it's moot.

A road loss to a tournament team, regardless of blowing a huge lead....it's the end of the world. One loss doesn't define a season. If it did, Michigan, Houston, Iowa State and Kansas just had a season altering Saturday.

Everything is in front of this team.

The Illini now have firmly planted doubt in the back of their collective mind about these kinds of close games and how they turn out.

You have to play this game loosely and fearlessly and with extreme confidence – like UCLA showed last night. That is not what we are seeing with the Illini in these ‘Tournament-Type’ games.

Yes, the really big results are yet ahead. But the Illini need to find some attitude and mojo when they are being severely challenged – as they will be in the really important games coming up soon. The Illini need to learn from this – and fast.

Did anyone else notice that when they showed the replay of Ben's late three point basket Mirk was getting slung to the ground underneath at the same time. Should have been three points and foul sending Mirk to the line. I know he got called for the same thing earlier that was not nearly as aggressive as that one was.
Was that the play tomi slipped on the wet floor? If not, he was thrown to the ground on that play too

This narrative is wrong. Most teams wouldn’t have gotten that game to overtime. There have been other games that required clutch shots to maintain or fight back to get a lead that never went to overtime that we won.

They can still make a final four. Last night did not change that.
Still have my tickets.

We should have NEVER been in a position to have to go to overtime. It is why you don't piss away 23-point leads. I think that is the point

Yes we shot the ball poorly in the 2nd half, yes we weren’t as active defensively as we need to be, yes Mirk struggled, yes the coaches need to be better and yes, UCLA capitalized like a team needing a quality win. But the reality is that this is a really talented, deep team that has the opportunity to make us incredibly proud to be Illini! Can’t wait for us to show Michigan what we are capable of … let’s all enjoy the ride! And congrats the the USA Hockey team! :shield:

Agree, when the defensive intensity dropped and we started jacking up quick 3’s and UCLA was making their run Brad should have called timeout and righted the ship. We had a tremendous size advantage we should have been pounding the ball inside.

Inexcusable. Lack defensive intensity by letting your foot off the gas and blowing a 33-10 lead. UCLA was playing desperate fighting for a tourney bid. And even though UCLA been disappointing this season, they have a good home record that included beating Purdue. Things to clean up but I still think we are a second weekend team that can be Elite Eight/Final Four caliber.

This is the correct narrative. We put ourselves in position to win those games when this team could have easily folded. Tomi hitting a game tying 3 against Nebraska, Jake hitting 2 FTs to force OT against MSU, KW hitting 2 FTs to force OT and scoring on a put back in OT with less than 5 seconds left. That doesn't sound like a team that lacks confidence. The Wisconsin game when we were playing with 6 players down 2 starters. Of course it would be great to have won some of those games but there is no way I see this team and say they lack confidence and aren't fearless. We finished games at Purdue, at Nebraska, at Iowa, at Ohio St, Tennessee, Texas Tech. Sometimes the bounces, the calls, etc don't go your way.

They were insanely cool while we built that lead and insanely hot when they got it down to 7. Not sure that qualifies as us "pissing it away"

On Feb 18, 1989 the Illini lost by 20 point to a Wisconsin team that went 8-10 in the conference and didn’t make the tournament.
And how did the Illinois team wind up in 1989? I seem to have forgotten.

You know what is inexcusable? These posts pointing fingers at this team. This is damn good basketball team. Fan support? not as much. Sometimes the other team plays lights out. UCLA shot 63% from the field after the first 10 minutes. As Brad said - kudos to them. We were in the wrong defense and we had the wrong defensive set on the final inbounds, but had we made 2nd half FTs we still win. People who write things like "inexcusable" have never participated in competitive sports.

If you haven’t watched the postgame podcast with Werner and Tausk, I highly recommend it. They do a very detailed deep dive into the defensive breakdowns including the final play.

Kyle talked at length about how they need to stop switching so much and “unleash” Boswell. Put him on whoever you want him to guard that night and let him make that player’s night as difficult as possible.

I think we also trail off ball screens wayyyy too much on some of these quick guards.

Fears and Dent can’t shoot. I’d love if we’d just start going totally under everything.

I’ll give you this. If we show up Friday we have a chance.

But if whatever happened the last 30 mintues of this game in the teams head stays… what a waste.

This game was lost on coaching. Which has been the NCAA issue. In game coaching. It’s almost like Brad tenses up.

Let’s just hope Brad is the one that learned from this game. If Brad learned, then we will be fine.
