Lots of appropriate comments about the defense.

But what I found frustrating is why we went away from driving the lane. Keaton was routinely finding a cutter for layups or dunks. With UCLA in so much foul trouble and us in the bonus so early into the half, we needed to put more pressure on them to play defense.

This is how you can offset a bad 3 pt shooting night. We don't value the 2 pt basket enough and it isn't the first time this year.

This !!

I’m still pissed we lost but I thought for a minute we might have lost Keaton to a serious injury when he went down. The B1G title was still a long shot needing someone besides us to beat Michigan. Get a 2/3 seed, ideally in St. Louis and keep getting healthier for a run. This team needs a Big Ten Tourney title or at minimum an appearance in the second weekend to be remembered for.

Everything is in front of this team.

Rightfully so, judgement will be made on how the NCAA Tourney goes. This should be no worse than a S16 and really an elite 8 team.

Couldn’t agree more … Should be a second weekend team at minimum … They’ve proven what they are at this point …

Anything less than that is absolute FAILURE … And it’s flat out UNACCEPTABLE …

March Brad Underwood show’d up yesterday.

No adjustments

12-0 run by ucla, and no timeout called by Brad

Sit back and watch watch ucla do whatever they want on offense

Make no adjustments on offense and kept shooting 3s.

Losing this game just gave us a ceiling as a 3 seed. Meeting we lose in the sweet 16 or round of 32 again..

One of my things this season is Brad not calling timeouts … He just kind of sits back and tries to let them figure it out …

Let’s call a timeout … Let’s draw something up … We don’t have anything to draw up !!!!! It’s all matchups or whatever … And clearly it works overall … But when it’s not for stretches … We better have some dang plays !!!!

Little guards who are fast as 💩 and crafty … TORCHED US !!!!! ALL. YEAR. LONG. !!!!!! Philon, Boyd, Dent, Thornton, Reid at NW gave us 30, Smith gave us 27, Fears gave us 26 & 15 … I’m sure there’s more … Figure out an adjustment !!!!

I believe
Don't think we played any zone last night. May have missed it, but maybe that could be deployed in stretches like the first half last night where we were getting taken to the hoop relentlessly and gave up something like 12/13 shots in that stretch. I know they're at the top of the league in 3 pt % so if they shoot you out of it kudos to them. But maybe it could have stopped a couple of easy buckets? It has been effective for us in spots this season.
I believe they played some zone late in the second half after a time out and on a couple of other possessions.

From the post game quotes it sounds the players didnt execute what the coaches asked them to do. Cant imagine they said give Dent an unimpeded run all the way down the court to the rim.
The one remarkable thing about the last play is all 5 guys on the court played horrible defense - literally all 5 had a hand in it - that is rare

It was clear they were all worried about fouling so essentially just let him go, while you don't want to foul in that situation, you have to try to deny Dent the ball and make him come back towards the in-bounder to get the ball which would have essentially taken away the ability to get all the way to the rim
- Kylan didn't try to deny Dent the ball at all
- Keaton did try to turn him once he was switched onto him
- Andre didn't hedge the screen to deny him the sideline or turn him towards the sideline if he wasn't going to hedge the screen
- Ben did help once Dent got past Andre
- Big Z came out too early and when he did get past him didn't reach back to block the shot for some reason

I would love to know what the assignments were supposed to be when Dent passed half court and Wagler got screened.

Was Stojakovic really supposed to drift backwards and towards the sideline with his back to the basket? Perhaps so, and Kylan was supposed to get back to guard the middle (or that Wagler could run under the screen and guard the middle) to deny Dent's drive? If so, maybe it's just easy to say in hindsight that's not a good plan. Maybe it would have worked if Kylan had gotten back quicker, or Wagler hadn't been taken out by the screen (was there bad communication on that, or did Wagler not listen, or was that not part of the plan?)

It seems like a much simpler plan to force the ball handler along the sideline. To do that, Stojakovic should stay on Dent's right hip, making sure he can't cut to the middle. Worst case, Dent still gets around him, but in a longer arc to the basket that takes more time off the clock, gives other defenders more time to get between Dent and the basket, and might force a running jumper or late pass with no time to shoot. If that was the plan and Stoj drifted too far to the sideline, then that might make Bos look bad when Bos was trying to get back to a different assignment altogether (like trapping Dent at the baseline or cutting off a pass to a cutter/shooter).

Doing something to disrupt the inbounds pass could also eat some time if Dent can't catch it in stride. There's probably some tradeoff of allowing long passes though, so I'm not going to make too big of a deal about that.

Would add that, with Z positioned at the rim, it would have been better to prevent Dent from coming straight down the lane with either side of the rim to attack. Keeping Dent outside limits his options at the rim, helping Z make a play on the ball.

My read of the play, admittedly in hindsight, is that AS should have kept inside leverage, forcing Dent to loop around and maybe KB getting involved in helping at the shot.

All of this...I have bemoaned the lack of set plays, inbound plays for a long time (not all on this board), and for the most part I have seen this year that maybe it's not as big of a deal (at least with this year's team) as I thought it was. All that said, it doesn't mean they are not important at all. I feel like a basketball coach should have some go to basketball plays to get a bucket when the team hits a lull, and we just dont seem to have that.

Brad is so good at so many things, but this is not one of the things unfortunately.

You beat me to it. We were 7 of 11 at one point and 6 of 31 after that. It's how you get a 23 point lead, then lose a 23 point lead. We were 15 of 27 in the paint.

I know Brad is a metrics guy, but this can't happen.
A metrics guy would have used a first half timeout (yet another game not using it) to calm the troops and maybe make a change.
A metrics guy would have adjusted and noticed the open 2s were easy money and plant a 7 footer or two in the lane

Agree … They were good when Gentry was here …

Since … Not so much …

I watched the game … I rewatched the game …

I have a couple thoughts …

Great teams don’t piss away a 23 point lead …

Great teams don’t make people question their effort …

AS … HORRIBLE … Missed box outs, I counted 11 on the film … That’s unacceptable … Missing FTs … You wanna get paid like an Alpha … Better be an Alpha !!!!! You don’t just get to show up when you want to …

Bam … Dent took belt to 🍑 … Tell your coaches/teammates you’ve got Dent … No switching … No nonsense … And if you are who you say you are and who I know you are … LOCK … HIS … 🍑 … UP … Let someone else beat you …

I don’t even need to break down the last play … Absolutely pathetic … Knowing how to defend that scenario is REC LEAGUE 💩 !!!!! THE EXACT SAME THING WE LET TENNESSEE DO !!!!!!!!
Agree. I would add I saw BAM ball-watching quite a few times when off the ball, e.g. when Dent jumped out of bounds and was bailed out by the fact Bam let Booker cut wide open to the basket for a dunk. Also chalk Jake up for some missed box outs as well, although some of those are just lack of athleticism more than effort.

Bam/Jake/AS are supposed to be the veteran leadership. They can't be failing us on the "small stuff", i.e. the plays winners make.

I think the visceral reaction to the UCLA loss is for a few reasons:
1) Most of our losses before this make sense; Uconn and Bama we were still figuring things out, Nebraska was a close loss on the buzzer that happened to be against a very good team- MSU- tough environment, very good team, no Kylan. Wisconsin- tough to stomach- but we played 6 guys and still should've won- Wisconsin is a solid team.

UCLA- there's no excuses anymore- not still "figuring things out", the team is fully healthy, we were and are the clearly more talented and better team, win and you likely lock down a 2 seed and give yourself a chance at a 1 seed, UCLA is a fine team- but was reeling from some awful losses, and to make matters worse- we come out and blow the doors off UCLA to go up 33-10. We then make history with the biggest choke/collapse in NCAA history for an AP top 10 team- so a true kick in the stomach result. Oh- and we lost on a last second layup- in which our defensive plan was questionable at best- and where the player didn't get stopped at all and had a nearly uncontested layup.

It's not that I don't think we are capable of beating Michigan- I realize full well that the eye test and analytics say we can beat them. BUT- we lost the UCLA game because of a lack of effort and intensity- best example would be Andrej bending over casually to get the lose ball under the basket, while 2 UCLA players go after it like their lives depend on it and one of them dives for the ball and saves it. We also gave up an offensive rebound on a flipping free throw.. in which the UCLA player then easily put it back for a layup- A FREE THROW offensive rebound and layup- what???????? Problem is- you can count a plethora of those in the game.

Our biggest weakness is our inability to guard quick guards and bigs that can pop- mostly because Tomi, Big Z, and Mirk are very poor perimeter defenders/defending in space. I'm deeply concerned about the tournament because you face... very good guards and often bigs that can pop- and guess what- some of the best coaches in the country who will literally attack Tomi, Z, and Mirk EVERY PLAY. And we have a coach (who does a ton of things well) but has shown to be a mediocre in game coach- in which I have very little confidence we will be able to adapt during the game. See Loyola, Uconn and more recent examples of MSU, Wisconsin, and UCLA...

I'm probably unfairly skeptical of this teams ability to beat Michigan because we are at the end of the season and are talking about the lack of urgency and effort in a MUST WIN GAME against an inferior opponent. That is deeply concerning- especially since we are an old team that should have the leadership to make sure we play with urgency.

Funny I asked someone who’d know the same question … His answer he came up with was BP3 against Minnesota in March 2013 … For a true buzzer beater …

It’s been a long, long while …
I think Rayvonte Rice Braggin Rights buzzer beater came after that, yeah? Point still stands though. They've happened against us enough lately. When will we get one?

Maybe we're just saving it for our one shining moment.

The timeout thing is really weird to me. He, literally, never calls one unless it is absolutely dire. We have had a bunch of games this year where we haven’t used our use it or lose it timeout in the first half.

Boswell has not been good defensively this year, in my opinion. That needs to change if we are going to make the run we all believe we can.
