And a shout-out to all on this post-game thread. We all know posted comments can be understandably negative after a loss…complaints about players, coaches, refs, etc. We got 17 pages so far, and virtually all positive. A credit to all and a signal of the love for this team. Nice to see!!Was at the game and it felt like we just missed a ton of close look but seemed like we had a good game plan.
What really stood out was how our fans handled it, during and after the game, nothing but class and composure, which UConn fans can’t really say. Honestly think we’ve got one of the best fan bases in the country.
There was a different vibe too, yeah it sucked, but there was still a lot of optimism about what’s coming. Talking with other Illinois fans after the game and at the airport, it’s the highest I’ve seen spirits after a loss like this. I’ve been skeptical of Brad Underwood before, but this feels like the best spot Illinois basketball has been in during my 38 years following them.
Lotta open 3's.......just sit back and throw the 3, .....a couple of these had NO Illini close. No doubt the defense was solid and good enough to get a win. However, the one area I thought we could have been better was navigating those screens. Reed had a few plays where his initial post position was way too deep, but he's a beast so that's tough to stop.
This is good data but incomplete. Bad defense on misses is also important. You can't just look at the outcome and assume the misses were all caused by good defense. They missed some open shots. They made 12 because they kept getting good looks.
I had the same thought - I know coaches don't want to change heading into a big game (roll with what got you there, etc.), but I think when it comes to Jake starting it was almost just a superstition by that point (and why not throw a curve ball at the other team!) - Andrej was getting the starter minutes, so the opposing coaches knew that. I think UConn used it to their advantage knowing Jake was a matchup they wanted to go at. Starting Andrej would have at least allowed us to get some downhill one on one looks with Andrej from the start given they were sticking to our shooters. An early Andrej scoring burst could have changed the whole complexity of the game from the start. You’re exactly right A big part of UConn’s offense is predicated on the pin downs. I don’t think we guarded that aspect very well as they hit 12 3’s. The big man has to show and recover. Also the point about Jake not being fast enough is spot on. I felt like we needed a fast start and having your best 5 out there could of helped that.
Everything you say is born out by the numbers:52 points: 2024 Elite Eight vs. UConn

Agree…something very telling in these stats. I looked at all 37 games this year…only two had eFG% (effective field goal %) below 40 (typical range was 45-65). Yep..the 2 games against UConn…both lowest eFG% of the yr, and way below our average. Two yrs ago in 23/24…same thing…lowest eFG% by far was E8 game against UConn. Interestingly, MSU number also on low side of range.
It’s not just a fluke…or bad shooting day by us. Didn’t look at all stats so maybe combo of other things, too…but can’t argue, Hurley is effective coach and somehow has our number. God…I gotta go shower after saying that!
Anyone know Mia could sing like that? Very impressive….

Please tell me what the 3 serious mistakes Z made that kept our top rebounded on the bench most all the game? Compare team stats and it makes you wonder why!!Z made three serious mistakes in his initial minutes, Ben played his best game ever (just needed a stronger blockout on that last rebound), Keaton just needed a bit more Purdue magic on his long shots, UConn guards are quick and leap so long rebounds not good for us, and the missed short shots hurt. I think UConn wins 7-8 out of 10 against us (and 3-4 out of 10 against Duke) but when it’s just one game, there’s a little luck involved. Fortunately, I feel like the refs did a good job, and no one shot us out of the game as have Trent and Matt going 0 for 11 in the past.
Taris Reed physically imposing his will on Z would be the reason. Please tell me what the 3 serious mistakes Z made that kept our top rebounded on the bench most all the game? Compare team stats and it makes you wonder why!!
For the year Z aver only 17min a game, top in team blocks and 3rd in Rebounds with limited min?
Final game minutes....
Z-6min Jake -17min. Ben-26. Mirk-28. Tom-33
Year starts don't lie....
Z. Min 638 Rebounds 167 Blocks 72
T. Min 865 Rebounds. 202 Blocks 20
Mirk Min 1089 Rebounds 297 Blocks 14
Ben Min 833 Rebounds 145 Blocks. 24
Jake Min 727 Rebounds 81 Blocks 8
You have to shoot better than 35% to get more assists. UCONN's strategy was to double team the ball at the top of 3pt line. That is why the number of dribble drives to the rim and Keaton shooting (without a pass) 10 of our 26 three point shots. The rest of the team (combined) took 16 three pointers - Take Tomi out of the mix - the rest of the team took 9 three pointers. 44 of our 70 scoring attempts were inside of 9 ft. 38 were inside of 7ft. We also had 8 turnovers to their 4.
The Illini adjusted very well in the second half. Reed was effectively taken off his game and a relatively non-factor compared to the first half.Taris Reed physically imposing his will on Z would be the reason.
So you only let Z play 6 min so Taris Reed can have a dbl dbl, OKTaris Reed physically imposing his will on Z would be the reason.

You have to give UCONN credit not just for their game plan, their execution defensively was excellent.
I liked the second half adjustment and letting him be the “free safety” just hard when there’s 4 shooters on the floorTaris Reed physically imposing his will on Z would be the reason.
Yup. Meant on the boards though. Z’s length didn’t matter due to Reeds strength and physicalityThe Illini adjusted very well in the second half. Reed was effectively taken off his game and a relatively non-factor compared to the first half.
The reality is that the coaching staff put the team in the best position to win. The problem is that not enough shots went in to win (and we had a lot of good looks). Some of those rim outs from three or two go in, and we are playing Michigan tonight for a championship.
Hurley said in the interview with Goodman after the game that they defended us pretty much the same way they did in the November game. held us to the lowest point total since that game52 points: 2024 Elite Eight vs. UConn

When we went ahead by 1 after being down 9, we got two or three stops but failed to score. I thought that was a chance to gain a little control instead of having to battle uphill all night. In the end, the ball literally bounced the wrong way 10 or 11 times.
No it wasn’t…their ceiling would have been basically EVERYBODY going on a heater on the same night…having one of our very best rebounding performances, really really clicking with ball movement AND simultaneously having Andrej, Wagler, and even Bos all finishing at the rack…knocking down our freebies and the whole ball of wax.View attachment 49399
I mean i get your point, but Uconn did it.
I was nervous all season when so much of our offense was match-up hunting with freshmen (Mirk/Wagler). They definitely exceeded realistic expectations.
I think this was probably the ceiling for this team. Pretty decent ceiling.
fair enough. No it wasn’t…their ceiling would have been basically EVERYBODY going on a heater on the same night…having one of our very best rebounding performances, really really clicking with ball movement AND simultaneously having Andrej, Wagler, and ever Bos all finishing at the rack.
But we didn’t. And UConn had a helluva a lot to do with that. But it wasn’t a game planning issue/schematic problem/in game coaching deficiency in the slightest. It was all there. Our bench gave us more than enough to win.
This team was great. But that elusive near perfect game eluded us. But that’s life and that’s okay. Great team. Great guys.
