That was a painful watch. All they did was iso Claude and the game was over.....no adjustments, at least none that seemed to slow him down and when he kicked it out they made their shots. Credit to the Trojans, but not a fan of Musselman.

I think this is gonna help in the long run. No gimmies. Have to bring it every day, home or away, early or late, good teams or not, full lineup or not. Brad can use this as tape for the rest of the season.

Just sucks right now, but we beat Indiana and all will be good.
One would have thought the NW loss would have been sufficient.

Brad, I'm glad you're our coach, but these blunders are getting tiresome, sir. You are paid handsomely to coach our team, make in game adjustments, and make sure we're prepared to play. Not to apologize. Less apologizing and more adjusting please.

Give me a break :ROFLMAO:. Of the last 7 years, how about before that lmao!

I don't understand. Did you have the same expectations for the Illini 8 years ago? Losing to bad teams when you suck is a lot different.

But.. seeing you unironically use "lmao!" as punctuation tells me something, too.

I mean you can assume whatever you want considering it's pretty common to use that?

3 things I never thought I would see today, but did:

1.) The pregame burning of sage prior to a Bigten Basketball presumably to excise some demons?
2.) The failure of said exorcising attempt that presumably led to the exact opposite: USC upsetting Illinois…just as we believed they were starting to gel.
3.) Brad Underwood enthusiastically talking about the merits of a half-court 3-2 zone defense in a video I found from his Associate Head Coach Gamecock days…

* There’s one out there somewhere, that I saw once and now can’t find…in which he lays out his philosophy of guarding ball screens. Seems like he was mostly all about the icing 🧁.

I mean, if we want to draw parallels to last year, is this not exactly like the Maryland game last year? Exact same time of year. Exact same degree of difficulty. Exact same problems.

I’m not worried.

An abysmal performance today. Laughable how these 11am tipoff games tend to go against us. Put out a display of no effort and no toughness. USC has talent and hopefully this win against us will become a springboard for them solely for the purpose of turning our loss into a Quad 2 instead of what it is currently which is a Quad 3 loss. This game was the polar opposite of the Penn State game. In our Penn State win, dudes step up in replace of KJ. Today not so much. Today really showed how important KJ is not as a scorer but as connector. Very obvious when we have KJ out there it makes everyone else get in a better flow. Kylan, Tre and Will all went zero from 3. Tomi had one of his worst game so far. Even when Tomi wasn't scoring much at least he was giving us damn near double digit rebounds. Today Tomi's rebounding effort was poor. Overall, on to the next and lets get back on track.

Sad effort….

- How many of the 32 3-point shots were good open looks? Maybe 10, if that? I don’t call near 1/2 court 3 pointers good looks. I don’t have a problem with the shoot 3’s philosophy, but not bad contested ones. They made 5 of 14 threes and it seemed like they made 10 as they were wide open looks and like a dagger each time. They drew the defense in and kicked out. I’m not sure why with Tomi and three other shooters we wouldn’t spread the floor and play booty ball with Ben and let him back down score or kick out if doubled.
-Also no attempt or ability to post up bigs and score so we could suck the defense in to get better looks. Would have been nice to have a Dainja and his touch. If teams are going to overplay the perimeter, what do we do?
-Worst part, 2nd half they controlled the lane and scored at will. They shot 57% from 2 for the game.

Not jumping off the ship, but we should only live or die with the 3 if we can produce decent looks. While we have had a decent run to date, with a young team, how many more loses would we have if KJ wasn’t spectacular at the right time. Point being, our system and execution need to be better so we don’t have to rely on spectacular.

They're from California, the sage thought it was for them.

Yes this was a "Brad loss" in that there were no adjustments that worked and no help given from the staff to the guys on the floor.

But at some point, especially in a Quad 3 type home game like this, don't you have to call out the players for not having effort out of the locker room, or not generating effort after a poor start, or generating some enthusiasm in the 2nd half to stop USC from pulling away?

So I guess I'm saying that both coaches and players didn't really suit up today. Brad has said (paraphrasing) that teams may shoot better, etc. but no one will outwork us ... um ... That has to be figured out.

Another guard using the high ball screen and torching us today for 31. No adjustments to get the ball out of his hands and keeping him out of the lane. We were just flat most of the game.

Why do we continue to have slow starts and these stinker games? No energy at all. You guys are being paid to play the game. If you were working a 9-5 job you would have been fired! I really doubt if we win either game this week.

On the bright side, it’s a quad 3 loss on paper for now but it’ll likely end up as a quad 2 loss. If this loss makes us better in March, I can live with it considering we were missing one of the best players in the country.
