The prevailing winds seem to favor ND standing pat for now and they have that luxury. Will the B10 wait on them or continue with expansion (Oregon, Washington) and revisit ND/Stanford when the CFP picture becomes clearer and ND perhaps feels more pressure to do something? IMO, ND is a take when and if they are ever interested, but I don’t see any point in waiting around if the goal is to get to 20 anyway.

If the SEC is willing to stay at 16 teams, the Big 10 might very well do the same, at least for a while, unless and until Notre Dame decides it wants to join.

The downside to that would be if there are specific teams we are interested in, they may cement themselves into a new alignment before then.

If they have their eye on other teams they will pursue them. In the past that has not been the way the B1G has operated. Add a team or two then sit back and wait. Obviously there are fewer desirable options available. (I so want to treat them like professional leagues and call the prospective universities "Franchises".
I have a hard time accepting the concept that Washington or Oregon (or any school other than ND) will bring an $80-100 million increase in revenue to the conference. That seems to be the measuring stick at this time.

Notre Dame indepent TV football contract is only worth $15M. Supposedly they got $35M from ACC last year since they played a full ACC football schedule. That will go down when they go back to only 5 games.

The question is can Notre Dame complete with Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, USC only getting $40M a year from TV all in when Big 10 and SEC schools will be getting $100M/year.

That is a lot of NIL money. They already lost their HC to LSU over his new $100M (10y year contract). That is probably double what Kelly made at ND (official salary was $3M). new ND coach is estimated getting $5M/year per Athletic.

The pressure for Notre Dame joins B10 when their ACC agreement ends in 2025 is to extra $60M/year. USC and UCLA joined purely for the money. Everybody else who wants to join the B10 is in same boat. I think the B10 will always accept ND as they are accretive. However each year ND does not join costs them 60M. I can't see ND joining SEC due to geography and historical ND schedule is already very B10 heavy - USC, Purdue, Michigan State, Michigan

That's the old way of thinking. After the USC/UCLA acquisition, geography means nothing. If the SEC were to offer ND a stupid amount of money, say $150 mil a year, they would say goodbye to their old rivals and not blink. I'm not saying they wouldn't shed a few crocodile tears on their way to the bank but they wipe them away with their boodle and they would get over it.

I'm confused--how is that NIL money?

I live in SoCal. USC is telling donors to redirect donations that used to go direct to USC AA department for paying coaches salaries, scholarships, new facilities etc to NIL funds to pay recruits (like we have Illini Guardians).

Big football programs are viewing NIL as just another expense. Ryan Day told Ohio State boosters he needed $13M NIL per year to stay competitive.

Day estimated that Ohio State would need about $2 million to convince top-shelf quarterback recruits to take their talents to Columbus. Per Day, elite pass rushers and offensive lineman are pricey, too, worth about $1 million.

"One phone call, and they're out the door," Day said. "We cannot let that happen at Ohio State. I'm not trying to sound the alarm, I'm just trying to be transparent about what we're dealing with.

OK. But that has nothing to do with TV money, which was what you appeared to be saying in your original comment.

Just spit balling here, but with the TV money pouring in, maybe some donor money can be redirected to buying players.
Could be, but I prefer not to have to connect the dots to understand what someone else intended to say, as it usually works out poorly for everyone.

Im all about player X and player Y making a little money to pay bills and drive a decent car, and pay for folks to see some games , but 2 million to this guy and 1.5 million to that guy is blowing my mind. I really dont think this is going to work out

I guess I didnt realize what we were up against. This isnt even college athletics anymore.
Im a little disenchanted right now. EVERYTHING has changed for me now

For sure.

It's a runaway train, to the "Saturday version of the NFL". The college football you and I know will be played in places like Charleson, IL, Mount Union, OH and New Haven, CT.

Why are you okay with athletes making a bit of money, but not a lot? Lord knows the NCAA, conferences, and the schools have been making absolutely absurd amounts of money off the athletes' free labor since the dawn of college athletics. Even still, compared to the institutions, the athletes arguably are just scratching the surface of what they are actually worth.

Labor getting paid their worth isn't a bad thing. College athletics have always been a major money-maker, just now it's the people that deserve the money that are finally making it.
