USC, UCLA to join the Big Ten in 2024

The tectonic plates shifted with UT/OU to the SEC and have now cracked wide open with USC/UCLA to the B1G. There is now the B1G and the SEC and then everyone else. If you aren't in either one right now you are on the phone trying to do your best to get in. Some schools have zero chance. Others (PAC other than Wazzu/OSU KU/OkSt Clemson/FSU/UNC/Miami/UND) will need to act quickly or else. Also keep an eye on aTm. None too happy about being ignored over the UT situation, I wouldn't put it past them to rattle the entire landscape by bolting to the B1G. Long shot, yes. Stranger things have happened.

There's next to zero chance A&M would leave the SEC. It's such a no-brainer cultural fit.

On the flip side there will be a USC v OSU game somewhat frequently. That looks to be one of the top 3 games of the year whenever they have it. On par with the hype around UGA and Bama
And there will be USC vs scUM, and UCLA vs scUM, and as much as I HATE scUM, these kind of games bring in $$$$$$$$

Agree. Honestly don't know why ND would preclude taking them. I think you take them now, and if ND says yes you take one more to get to 20. Are we sure SEC wouldn't jump in and see if they can nab Washington and Oregon while we wait on ND?
I think it changes which schools they target. If ND says yes, you might consider taking an ACC school to keep them happy/in the fold. In that case, you might want it to be Stanford you take in that deal instead of Oregon.

The window on "for now" better be pretty short.
I have to imagine the new norm gets established in the next few weeks so they can lock in the new media rights deal, and I have to imagine the big ten told Notre Dame it’s hop on now and help steer the ship or get left behind and you may be left out of the B1G v. SEC invitational.

So, what do we predict will be the impact on the playing fields?
Will big 10 style of play shift away from it's historical meaning (both BB and FB) ?

Those who are tossing out scenarios where the B1G grabs up multiple schools scrambling to find new homes are completely ignoring how the B1G always operates in these scenarios.

1. The B1G methodically negotiates with one or two teams, and then holds pat for several years, regardless of the landscape around them. They just don’t Willy nilly scoop up desperate teams.
I don’t think it’s ignoring anything. You’re talking about a B1G that doesn’t exist anymore. i.e., a preeminent regional conference amongst four other similarly preeminent regional conferences. The power 5 is dead. How the B1G traditionally operated in that bygone era is irrelevant.

The new “B1G” will be the management apparatus overseeing one half of a national coast-to-coast college athletics multi-subdivision major league media conglomerate. The only question to resolve is which programs not already members will provide the widest possible coverage vis-a-vis it’s SEC counterpart and how soon can it secure those programs, because the levy having completely broken yesterday, there’s nothing whatsoever to be gained by waiting around.

just happy that I grew up a fan of a B1G program rather than a PAC12 team. I love our regional rivalries and would be so sad today if those were now a thing of the past.

UCLA/USC may be able to maintain some of them via non-con games in the immediate future, but once the schedule inevitably transitions to a full B1G slate with no non-con games, those will be gone forever

One might say they have no place to stay

I was curious, so I compiled this for my own edification - AAU members among the major conferences, post-realignment (so far) ...

* 15 of 16 Big Ten schools (all except Nebraska)
* 7 of 10 Pac 10 schools (Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, Utah, Washington)
* 5 of 16 SEC schools (Florida, Mizzou, Texas, Texas A&M, Vandy)
* 5 of 15 ACC schools (Duke, Georgia Tech, Pitt, UNC, Virginia)
* 1 of 12 Big 12 schools (Kansas)

There's another 30 schools, but none are power 5 - Ivy, UC system, etc.
Right. The SEC schools aren’t leaving their league. You sort of assume that if the Big 10 wanted Pitt or Kansas, they’d already be members.

That leaves Cal, Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Virginia, UNC, Duke and Georgia Tech. And then Notre Dame would be the one non-AAU exception they’d make.

Ranking by largest television markets:

6. San Francisco - Stanford/Cal
7. Atlanta - Georgia Tech
12. Seattle - Washington
16. Denver - Colorado
24. Raleigh-Durham - UNC/Duke
30. Salt Lake City - Utah
64. Tucson - Arizona
113. Eugene - Oregon
177. Charlottesville - Virginia

This is not entirely fair because the Tucson, Eugene and Charlottesville markets are all immediately adjacent to much larger markets… Phoenix (#11), Portland (#21) and DC (#9)

Champaign/Decatur/Springfield market is 90th, by the way.

I read that as
" this is not a race to see who can apply or ask first. we will give all schools a period of time, (a month or two?) to digest the new reality and we will evaluate the applicants in total "

no one is calling South Bend and asking them to join
I'm not sure that's a good read. Broadcast rights negotiations are going on now and I guarantee the SEC is also fielding calls. I'm not sure a month or two is feasible.

It would be silly not to. And per the tweet the sources say B1G is specifically waiting on ND. Not a ambiguous pool of potential applicants. The B1G knows what programs are out there, and which might join, and probably has had some kind of expansion wish list for years. It'd be incompetence to not have at least considered who you'd want to add and who you wouldn't.

I guarantee you SEC has reached out as well. ND is, without a doubt, the most valuable program left outside the B1G/SEC duopoly. You absolutely call them up and say, "We want you but we won't wait forever. Clock is ticking."

Im guessing the time period. maybe its two weeks. I dont know
The point is, its not first come , first served
ND is not going to SEC and most of the schools we feel are a fit with us, out west, most likely arent either .

If I'm Washington, Oregon, Wazzu, Colorado, Utah, or Oregon State, I'm also calling the Big 12 to gauge their interest. Some of those schools will not end up in the B1G or the SEC. Colorado and Utah make so much sense for the Big 12 geographically.

If you want to get really nuts, if I'm the Big 12 commissioner I really screw with things and I call ND and invite them to join the Big 12. Makes no sense for ND to leave all of their traditional opponents, but if I'm the Big 12 commissioner I think it wouldn't hurt to ask, and it might make the B1G or SEC sweat for about five minutes.

On the one hand, yes, it's a major decision, people should be deliberative.

On the other, while it is indeed a major decision, it is not a particularly complicated one, even for Notre Dame. Staying independent is a madman's gamble at this point. If they come to grips with that, then you're picking between the B1G and the SEC. Even for all the complicated history between ND and the B1G, that's a no-brainer, especially since the B1G is now literally a coast-to-coast conference.

Right. The new B12's payout is flippin' dwarfed by what the BIG's is about to be.
