Jim Leonhard was 2023. That said, I’d want Brenda to call him today and see if he’s available after February.
This is the point that needs to be made. There simply will not be many Indiana like stories. It’s a freak of college football. That being said, the counter point carries a lot of weight: This new era of NIL and the portal change everything.I’m just as pissed as the next guy about freaking Indiana’s historic rise, but that’s what it is historic. How many programs in the depths like IU was have been able to turn it around like this? I honestly don’t know but can’t be many. As I said above I’ll still be happy with 8-9 wins with what we’ve had to endure the vast majority of years prior
I just don't know what gives Jacas the opportunity to be impactful with our defense. Our scheme is designed to have zero pressure on the QB. I know it's because they want to contain the QB run, but that's the reality. You essentially take your best player out of the game.Game notes:
1. If I was an NFL scout, I would take Xavier Scott early knowing he was the keeping the entire defense competent.
2. I understand the plan was to keep Demond in the pocket, but where are you Gabe Jacas? We need you in the worst of ways.
3. A lot said about Aaron Henry, so I'll keep it brief. I'm not at the "fire him" stage, but questions need to be asked. I actually don't mind the "bend but don't break" approach. The bigger question is this team badly needs to create pressure. We can all see the opponent is getting forever in the pocket. A strategic shift seems necessary.
4. I'm not blaming Altmyer for the turnovers. The team's back was against the wall and he needs to increase the risk to keep the ball moving. If anything I appreciate him correctly diagnosing the seriousness of the situation.
5. Deep cut: Jordan Anderson needs more snaps at tight end. His blocking rate is impressive and he can grow as a pass-catcher.
6. I was impressed with the offensive line again. Would love to know more about why things were such a struggle to start and have significantly improved. Luke is getting lots and lots of time back there on passing downs.
7. Staff gave the green light for more Altmyer keeps on RPOs. Not sure if that was a decision just for this important game or if they are making that change for the entire stretch run.
8. That game is multiple standard deviations against you for turnover luck. That muffed punt would have been massive. Guaranteed 3 points and you feel great about getting 7 with how the offense had performed to that point. The offense doesn't have to press on that next possession being down two scores and can continue their methodical approach. Alas.
9. Rusk is coming on. 9 catches for 124 yards against two really good teams. Something to monitor.
10. I think the anger is fair, but perspective is needed. Illinois just played their hardest stretch of five consecutive games since....end of 2017? 2016? Even those are probably easier stretches. This was a really tough stretch. The schedule is about to lighten substantially. I'm still hopeful for a good finish.
I think it is easier now than ever to make historic turnarounds. Cignetti is obviously an elite coach. However, in the past Indiana just wouldn't have been capable of getting the talent needed to win like they have. Now with the transfer portal you can get 4 star guys that aren't playing because they're behind 5 star guys, and you can buy talent you wouldn't have been able to get before.This is the point that needs to be made. There simply will not be many Indiana like stories. It’s a freak of college football. That being said, the counter point carries a lot of weight: This new era of NIL and the portal change everything.
This is what I don't understand. Especially when you're already down, you have this guy whose whole thing is making big, gamechanging plays on defense and you just continue to let him get double, triple teamed. The "keep the QB in the pocket" thing wasn't working anyway and we were down multiple scores. Just throw a couple extra guys at their pass protection so they have to take Jacas on 1-v-1 and at least give him a chance to make a play.I just don't know what gives Jacas the opportunity to be impactful with our defense. Our scheme is designed to have zero pressure on the QB. I know it's because they want to contain the QB run, but that's the reality. You essentially take your best player out of the game.
I think Bret is a good coach, but I'm not sure he'll get it right. I thought he should have found a better DC last year. I'm not sure he'll let Henry go. I definitely hope you're right and I'm wrong.I like Aaron Henry on a human level, but today the way the defense was structured was unacceptable. It looked like the Oregon game last year where we just dropped 8 and let them pick us apart. We made Demond Williams look like Peyton Manning.
And while there were flaws from the offense, the defense put them in a spot to force throws and force play calls. I can accept those mistakes bc back against the wall, you have to take those shots.
What happened to the defense that totally frustrated USC? How did they look so inept today when you had 2 weeks of prep? This WAS the game to give us a shot at the playoff. Instead we looked inept.
In Bret we trust and I know he’ll get it right. If we go 9-3 I will still be happy. But today fans can and deserve to be upset.
The issue is when you don’t have a really talented defense overall, you have to find a way to maximize your best player and take your chances. The current scheme totally neuters him and forces the worst part of the defense to make a lot of plays. It’s just a bad way to run a defense.I agree with your assessment so I will concentrate on #2. Jacas is not being used correctly. Granted, he is being double teamed so to correct this, you move him to where the double teamed is not. He needs to move all over the LOS and create a better matchup. He needs to be rushing the QB every single down from all areas of the field. Use him like Micah Parsons or aging myself, Lawrence Taylor. Complete waste of his last year and I blame Bret for this. I also believe that playing 7 yards off the LOS against the opposition receivers is stupid. Get up on the one and knock the hell out of them from the get go. Knock them off their route. That is what I did when I was a corner in HS. You still have a 5 yard cushion before you cannot touch the WR. We are weak on D and Bret is just flossing over this like it’s nothing. OK, you are pissed but it doesn’t show on the sidelines as we are getting our head handed to us. We could be the worst 10-3 team on college this year.
Sustained competence. You hit the nail on the head. I am old enough to have watched Illinois defeat Washington in the Rose Bowl on NBC color TV on January 1, of 1964. And sustained competence is something that has rarely occurred in the Illinois football program in the ensuing 61 years.As the season approached, we had a lot of people in the CFP camp or 9-3 with a very weak schedule. A lot of that is just typical hype leading up to the season.
I'm 100% disappointed in our defense and the fact that we are wasting the best QB we've had in a decade+. Regardless, I've seen the bottom, and we are entering into an era of actual sustained competence we haven't seen in decades. We have a great coach and a good enough OC. I trust Bret to fix the DC situation. Hopefully he can correct it enough to keep our season on track.
to be fair... i'm okay with being the worst 10-3 team in college football LMAOI agree with your assessment so I will concentrate on #2. Jacas is not being used correctly. yikes. Is that a coaching or execution issue?I'm sorry I can't let this play go. It's honestly beyond comprehension what is going on here.
Illinois had just closed to within 10, 35-25. Many jokingly said after the score "meh, just onsides kick" Sure enough the 2 plays after the kickoff are a 20 yard pass and a 15 yard penalty and boom, Washington at our 40. Anyhoo, UW has 3rd and 6 at our 35, 9:27 to go
Pre-snap 3 WRs up top to start originally, #12 shifts to behind the TE, #1 on Illini followed as well and is in those blue arrows. #7 then goes in motion, Illini DB follows him

Just after snap. 3 guys "rushing" the passer. 3 guys in the red area now covering #7 the WR in motion. 3 guys in blue that I can only assume are spying Williams, but legit they are just standing there, not making any moves whatsoever. In Yellow we have man coverage on #81. Also a deep safety not in the camera shot. that's the guy that eventually tackles #12, I assume he's providing help on #81 in yellow. But, does anyone cover #12? Lol. No.
Just to sum up, this is basically a 2 man route. 81 starts up top and does a post/corner towards the right. 12 crosses underneath from right to left. It wasn't like two defenders got caught up in the crossers, there was literally no one that paid any attention at all to 12. #7 went in motion to bottom but basically stops.

Williams throws. 3 man rush doesn't do anything whatsoever. Still man coverage in yellow, UW receiver has a step and probably open, but safety not in screen probably helping on that route. #7 stopped at the bottom, doesn't make any moves upfield at all. But, we got 3 guys on him. And 3 guys spying Williams. And #12 completely, utterly wide open such that I could throw the worst floating duck of all time and still get it to him for an easy 15-20 yard gain.
No one spying Williams on 3rd and 18, but now 3 guys spying him. Rushing 3 again which had not worked all day. 3 guys in red tracking a single WR.
Make it make sense. What in the world is this?

That's your standard Ahen 3-3-3 cluster zone. 3 (non) rushers, 3 slow, unagressive linebackers, and 3 non-participant observers. Super innovative.I'm sorry I can't let this play go. It's honestly beyond comprehension what is going on here.

I hear what you're saying but without him, this game would have been ugly. Under duress all day but made some amazing throws to keep the chains moving. He was the leading rusher. The interception on the pass to Beatty was as good a throw as you can make...just couldn't come down with it. Without a run-game, and knowing we had to score 50 pts to win, I don't know what else he could have done.View attachment 44481
A) Time for AH to update his resume;
B) A below average game by Luke;
C) Too many stoooopid penalties;
D) we still have a shot at a very good, if not great season, especially by historic Illini seasons
Let’s finish 4-0 and put the cap on a great two year run. We’ve not seen a two year run like this in . . . forever?
I L L
Speak for yourself lol the thought of us, Illinois football, actually living up to expectations this year was low when you really think about itWe aren't who we thought we were.
It always comes back to coachingyikes. Is that a coaching or execution issue?

Hmmm reminds me of 2023... when we should have fired Henry the first time.New fear unlocked: the game vs. Northwestern is for one of us to go bowling...
