For sure. But for example, all of my Iowa friends make their entire holiday weekend plans around that Friday game with Nebraska now, and it’s a blast. Ohio State/Michigan fans would not NOT sell out their stadiums no matter the weather. I want so badly for Illini football to have that passion behind it, which I get they must earn. This will be unpopular here, but if we ever got to the point where we were consistently a bowl team and winning 7-8 games and we still had fewer than 45k showing up for the NU game, I’d support trying to turn it into an annual Chicago tradition. Soldier Field is obviously the better football venue, but Wrigley might carry more nostalgic/gimmicky value to drive up attendance. We seem kind of unique to have like 65% of our student population perform a mass exodus to one metro area that weekend, and it’s an area where we have hundreds of thousands (millions?) of our fans. Wouldn’t work while we are bad (as we saw), but it can be a fun annual event in the spirit of Florida/Georgia in Jacksonville with time and success.
