Why is washington state still ranked? Like, why? Just lost to 4-6 New Mexico and have a season full of nothing but hail-mary wins over scrub teams.

UNLV #23 and ahead of us for beating Hawaii by 2?

tired of these voters' affection for trash conference teams for utterly nothing.

So you would rank them below 4 teams with two losses? That would be crazy. Now if they lose next week, then yes, they would be around 10 or 11.
If they lose by a large margin, I'd bet they drop more than that. But partially depends on what happens with the rest of the top 5-12. A huge margin of victory by OSU would be the sign some folks need to be convinced their record is purely a product of the weak schedule. UNLV, Washington St, and Boise St are the only teams in the top 25 with a worse SOS.

the 10-0 is the shiny object for the voters but there is no way Indinia is the 4th best team until they prove it by actually beating somebody good. 10th is more their spot IMO. If they win or hang tough at OSU different story.
I think Texas has a similar resume to them, I would say both teams' best wins are Michigan. It makes no sense to me to drop undefeated teams until they take a loss. You should be rewarded for not losing

TX might have a thin resume but they have won at Mich at Vandy and at Ark. 3 teams that could be bowl teams. Also CSU is 7-3 in the MWC. IU's best wins are UM and UW both at home. As I said we will see what they are about Sat at OSU.

A few eye openers: Indiana..played NO ranked teams: strength of schedule is # 62. Colorado: same story no ranked teams defeated strength of schedule 41. Notre Dame...loss to N. Ill , no ranked teams played, exception Louisville #15 at the time, strength 32.

Surprised by this, to be honest, but I love it! I'm a broken record on this, but even if one wants to argue that it isn't THAT important to be ranked ... I think there is no serious argument that the benefits of having that number next to our team's name for the nation to see FAR outweigh any supposed silver linings about "not getting complacent" or "keeping that chip on our shoulder" or whatever other nonsense.

None of those teams are ranked anymore. Indiana thrashed one of our "ranked" wins 56-7 (Nebraska - who we beat in OT).

I get that Indiana doesn't have a tough schedule, but neither do we. Indiana deserves credit for beating most of their opponents handily. Yes, their schedule is easy, but it's not like they're ekeing out wins against bad opponents. They're making bad opponents look worse than they actually are. MSU is not a good team, but IU should get credit for beating them by 37. MSU has played OSU and Oregon this season, and their worst loss is to IU. Nebraska, again, not a good team. But they hung in there with OSU, beat Colorado, and beat Rutgers. They lost to IU by 49.

Juiceman makes excellent points. On Indiana, taken as a whole, there's way more "for" Indiana, than "against". Yes, Michigan happened, but their body of work is so far tilted in their favor that anything else is just nitpicking.

Indiana eeked out a win against Michigan on 11/9
Oregon needed a late TD to pull away from Idaho, back on 8/31. Nobody even talks about this anymore.
Penn State was in a one score game w/ Bowling Green on 9/7. Ditto

Indiana has earned their status even though it's like a BYU schedule but they did win the games on their schedule.Im not disputing their accomplishments but just because those teams didn't stay ranked and they were on the schedule as such we deserve a little more credit

KU has beaten ISU and BYU
Nebraska beat CU
We lost to Minnesota who beat USC and should have beaten UNC
Iowa beat Minnesota but lost to MSU. so it is hard to know what is going happen any given week

Our schedule is not the hardest in the nation but it is not a cupcake schedule. I think our fans would fell more confident if we would have held our lead against PU.

Our football program is quality and they need to be ready and we can beat anyone but we don’t have the talent to not be ready. Our margin of error is small compared to other teams. That is a huge difference from everything needed to go right for us to win a game otherwise we lose by 40 against anyone just a few years ago

This group of players deserves great credit along with the coaches

Are they still ranked or have any qualified for a bowl yet? I liked the stat 6 weeks ago. Now, it's three wins versus .500 or sub .500 teams.
I mean, TBF … “ranked wins” is literally never tracked like that. On the flip side, if MSU were for some reason ranked in the final poll after shocking Penn State, no lists would count that as a “ranked win” of ours. Just is what it is - a slightly illogical but nostalgic way of rewarding a team for getting a W in the heat of that moment vs. a team they THOUGHT OF as a top 25 team. :)

I would be highly surprised if anyone on here would argue that being ranked in any sport after 80% of the schedule is complete is not a good thing. And maybe I missed it, but have people argued that not being ranked in football is good because the team will play with a chip on its shoulder? I know some have said not being ranked in preseason poll or after week 1 in basketball isn’t that big of a deal and could be beneficial, but basketball and football are different in general and definitely in the case of the Illinois programs.

In football with fewer games, I’d say you’d like to be ranked preseason because as another poster wrote it is “loss insurance.” There are just fewer outcomes to move you into or up the rankings and where the Illinois football program is, being ranked at anytime is important to help build a positive narrative. And it is big for recruiting as Bret is trying to change the narrative from bad program that might occasionally have a good year to consistently good program who can honestly aspire to seasons of greatness. So, yeah, I’ll take a ranking in football anytime anyplace.

On the basketball side, with where the Illinois program is and the greater opportunities for resume boosting wins throughout the season, a preseason or week 2 ranking is not that important. I don’t agree with the “not being ranked will keep us hungry crowd,” it’s just not the end of the world if we aren’t early. Illini MBB has established a brand. We win and we’ll move into (see this week’s ranking) polls and move up them. At the level we’re recruiting, having #25 next to our name preseason is not going to alert recruits to who we are. They know who and what Illinois basketball is. It’s not a bad thing to be ranked early, it’s just not a big thing if we’re not as far as how the season will play out.

Illini WBB is still in the same boat as football. Shauna is trying to build a program and brand that all recruits and the powers that be know. So, again, rankings at anytime help greatly with the story she can tell. If the program continues on same trajectory as it has had, in 5 years it will be far less important to receive a pre- or early season ranking. We’re not there yet.
