How many of them had USC on their ballots? Because yeah, that could actually end up being a bigger shift than we're thinking.
Okay, I looked myself. Last week, 25 pollsters had USC ranked but not Illinois, and 3 pollsters had Illinois ranked, but not USC.

I did a little exercise. I took the results of last week's votes and did the following:
1. I treated USC and Illinois as being ranked 26th if they were not included on s person's ballot.
2. If Illinois was ranked higher than USC last week, I moved Illinois up one spot.
3. If Illinois was ranked lower than USC, I just averaged their two spots in that person's poll (then rounded down to be conservative).
4. If both were unranked, I just left Illinois unranked.

After doing that, I came up with a vote point total of 261 points. Which would put them at 21st in the polls based on last week's point distribution. This makes sense both visually (eye test) and statistically (we're basically swapping with USC).

Personally, I think we'll get more than 261 points, because I have a feeling some of the voters will over compensate not ranking Illinois last week. But not enough to jump into top 20. The point spread between 21 and 20 last week was like 200 points.

I’m thinking 2 points upward

but it doesn’t really matter that much .

but yea, every point upward now is one less we need in the weeks to follow

Iowa St basketball and football have had consistent success that confounds me. Not the flagship university instate and in a decling conference.
They do seem to punch above their weight consistently but it is a land grant university, so it is one of their two “main” public universities.

Yep. The narrative will be more that USC lost to a bad team, instead of the Illini beat a good team.
I think you hit the nail on the head. USC dropped out of the coaches poll. They got the same number of votes (17) as Maryland.

It's funny how teams like FSU weren't highly thought of until they beat Alabama, then they shot right up into the spotlight. Notre Dame was one of the top ranked teams preseason then they lost 2 straight but never dropped out of the top 25. The polls depend on who you are not necessarily if you're good or not. Teams like OSU, Georgia, LSU, Clemson, Alabama etc. will always be ranked high in the polls because of name recognition. I am betting there will be at least a couple 2 loss teams in the playoffs and at least 1-3 loss team in there. I believe if the Illini would win out-BEATING #1 OSU they would be stiffed by the committee!

obviously we want IU and USC to keep winning. As to USC so does Notre Dame.

Damn, I thought we'd be #20, or at LEAST #21. Like others have said, the Indiana game is gonna be the albatross around our neck until we either a) beat tOSU, or b) at least give tOSU a good fight and beat everybody else.

Looking at how little movement there was, I'm guessing it has more to do with the fact no one ahead of us really deserved to fall below us except USC. No one ahead of us lost, and no one behind us had any better of a win than we did.

Also, we got about the right amount of points I expected. It's just the nature of the weekend's results.

I’m going to say this under the assumption that both OSU and our Illini can find ways to win this Saturday … 🤞🏻 So FWIW, these are some games featuring teams ranked above us worth watching:

- #18 Florida State hosts #3 Miami (FL)
- #16 Vanderbilt travels to #10 Alabama

I think if either one suffers a bad enough loss and we look good, a jump is possible. It’d be nice to sneak into the top 20 with OSU coming to town!
