Last time Illinois beat a ranked Michigan team in Champaign was 1983 when #9 Illinois beat #8 Michigan 16-6.

I get they’re undefeated and that’s undoubtedly exciting for the Hoosiers program. They should be proud of that. But I don’t get the hype. They’ve played nobody. Their best win is a mediocre Maryland team at home?
While this is true, you can only beat who is on your schedule. They have won every game by double-digits, including two road B1G games (against teams who won bowl games last year). They look incredibly solid right now (averaging 42 pts in B1G games), and until they lose, the hype is justified. We will know much more about that team after they play Nebraska; but for now, it is hard to say anything negative about IU.

Agreed about beating who you play . . . . but Indinia has the lightest load in terms of scheduling in the B1G, and they have definitely taken advantage of it. I see only four potential losses remaining on their schedule, and if they are as good as the media says they are, one could argue that they might have only one more loss to tOSU . . . It appears their floor might be 8-4, while their ceiling could be 11-1? 😳

To be honest with you, I never saw this coming. If you told me that we would have a chance to go 5-1. GOTTA BEAT PURDUE! And, that Bama would be beat by VANDY, I would say no way! If we win the next two, I can see us getting to 9 games and a very, very nice Peachy like Bowl.

I think they split the rest of the year. I think their first loss comes this weekend :)

IU is a great unknown to me. They deserve the kudos to this point for winning the games the way they have.

The next 5 games, though, I believe can present a huge challenge. I believe that Nebraska can easily beat them, as well as Washington. Going into East Lansing is not an easy task either (though MSU has not been great). Add in a home game to Michigan and then at the Horseshoe. There is a chance they drop to 6-5 over that five game stretch. If they free slide in that stretch, then there is a universe where Purdue beats them in a rivalry game. I get the sense that they have the potential to be like the 2011 Illini team. They also have the chance to easily go 10-2 or 11-1.

Depending on what happens this week, there is a possibility that the 10/19 game will be a ranked matchup. I believe that game will be the barometer for IU.

Ya, but they’ve beaten everyone they’ve played pretty handily like a good team should. Not like they were a bunch of one score games with a lucky play. Schedule gets a lot tougher for them second half, so we’ll see. Illinois started 6-0 and finished regular season 6-6 once. Indiana is probably looking at 8 or 9 wins in regular season, but it’ll be pretty interesting if turns out to be more or less than that.

Reading further on down the thread I basically repeated what others have said, so ditto

The Kyle Hudson muffed punt in 2007 at a raucous night game MS and then Juice's record-setting day in the Big House in 2008 are well remembered.

But we don't talk as much about a 1-6 Illinois team galavanting for 500 yards of total offense at home, blowing out a Michigan team we were just laughably more talented than.

Illinois Football 2007-2016 is one of the most bizarre decades any program has ever had.
There is a great highlight video on YouTube of that game, and since the channel is dedicated to Michigan football, most of the comments are Michigan fans. This one stood out:

"this was one loud stadium for 55,000 fans."

Memorial Stadium can get really loud, and it was awesome to see us re-approach that type of atmosphere for the KU game. Hoping Purdue and (especially) Michigan can keep that momentum going. I would still have to say that the 2007 Michigan night game is the loudest I have ever heard MS, at least on TV.

we hate them way more than they hate us , tho

I really wish it was mutual

I was there and it was definitely the loudest I've ever seen the place.

Michigan makes a great villain.
I was at Michigan 2000 and Michigan 2007. The 2000 game is still the loudest game I have ever attended at Memorial. The ILL chant was deafening. The 2007 game was still very loud with about 13k fewer people because of the renovations. Hoping for a very raucous crowd in this one!

I was in North Endzone for 2007 game. Many seats were empty by early 2nd half (it was a cold October night). Still very loud, though, until the muff punt. Every punt return in the Zook years felt like we were on pins and needles.

by a so called "special teams" guy

boy , I miss his recruiting prowess, but not the stupid game management nor the stupid swinging gate extra point formation

just a shame he couldnt recruit and retain ace coaches like he could recruit ace players

It's the Michigan game of the following year that is my favorite Illini football game I've attended.

2008 in Ann Arbor. Juice went off, setting the stadium record for total yardage. We broke our school record for most points scored against Michigan - a record that was set in Champaign in 1924... the game we're commemorating on the 19th.
