Week 8 Games

#27

Illini2010-11

Sugar Grove

Interesting because the kid never waved his arm above his head.
The issue was his left hand giving what appeared to be the "get away signal". This constitutes as an invalid fair catch, but result is same as fair catch...ball is dead once he touches the ball.

I personally do not buy the kid's balance excuse. It looked like the get out of way signal.

I’ve gone back and forth on this. It did feel like we would be livid if this had happened to us. Having said that, it feels like he could easily be using the get away signal to capitalize on the punt team slowing down. The six people near him when he started did not seem like they were trying very hard to tackle him.

This is not unprecedented. 2015 game of Wisconsin and NW. Same call on review of a TD punt return.

This board is livid about almost everything ref related, so you are correct there. The refs excuse would definitely be used. With that said, I do believe this call was much more clear cut than the targeting call on Newton. The only reason this play is even being discussed is because it was returned for possible go ahead td.
