I am guessing that we won't be in the top 25 in AP, maybe as high as 24 Coaches.

I've got us at 25 in the AP. The losses by teams ahead of this week somewhat are canceled out by the wins of the teams behind us. That said, I expect an utter log jam between about 15 and 25. A win against Washington next week could feasibly push us top 20 in my opinion. Just gotta keep winning.

I am thinking 22 or 23 this week and a nice jump next week with a convincing win as Washington.

Poster “logjam” liked this (see bold). I just found it kind of humorous. Is there a way to like a like? Or “liker” name checks out?

Definitely worthy of a ranking. The fact that no one knew how good Indiana was hurt us. I could see us still getting into the CFP if we win out. The margin in the Indiana game may haunt us, but otherwise those two losses are looking pretty good. SEC has ten ranked teams --going to have to pass a lot of them to get make top-11 (assuming the G5 is outside the top 12).

Beaten:
Western IL (irrelevant)
4-3 Duke
4-3 Western Michigan
#21 and 5-2 USC
2-5 Purdue

Lost
#2 and 7-0 Indiana - absolutely crushed :(
#1 and 7-0 tOSU

If we win out, and do so with solid wins and not “barely made it by a bad team” wins, the Indiana game looks more and more like an anomaly.

Like a bad dream we simply couldn’t wake up from.

The Ohio State game can be explained away. Turnovers tilted the field and we shot ourselves in the foot…but we are still the only team to put points on them from the red zone right? So an “ok” performance.

If we win out, the IU games looks more and more like an “everything went right” game for them while we simultaneously had our “everything goes wrong” game.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how drastically different the "vibe" around this team and its CFP chances will change if we win out. You might not see these super impressive wins (sans Washington, given it's on the road), but 10-2 with losses to possibly the top two teams in the nation is almost certainly a CFP (regardless of the margins of defeat in those losses) unless an unusual situation occurs where we are squeezed out. In other words, we'll have an excellent chance.

Let's remember that last year's team was 6-3 and unranked in the CFP rankings on November 9 during our bye week after we lost to Minnesota at home the week before. Our CFP ranking increased by the following amount for the following results. Record is in parentheses to show the "quality" of the win.

---> Illini NR in CFP Poll
Nov. 16 - W 38-16 vs. (5-7) Michigan State
---> Illini #25 in CFP Poll
Nov. 23 - W 38-31 at (7-5) Rutgers
---> Illini #23 in CFP Poll
Nov. 30 - W 38-28 vs. (4-8) Northwestern at Wrigley
---> Illini #20 in CFP Poll entering our Citrus Bowl matchup with South Carolina

So by beating three mediocre teams, we went from unranked to top 20 ... about 2-3 "bumps" per game. I think we would move up more than that this year given we don't have that effectively disqualifying third loss yet, but let's just assume we get 3 spots for the Washington win and 2 for the others. CFP Poll isn't out yet, so I'll just have to use our AP ranking for the sake of this exercise:

---> Illini #23 today
Oct. 25 - W at Washington
---> Illini #20
Nov. 1 - W vs. Rutgers
---> Illini #18
Nov. 8 - Bye Week
---> Illini stay at #18
Nov. 15 - W vs. Maryland
---> Illini #16
Nov. 22 - W at Wisconsin
---> Illini #14
Nov. 29 - W vs. Northwestern
---> Illini #12

If we have won 5 straight games, are 10-2, likely ranked at or near the top 12 and our only losses are to #1 OSU and #3 Indiana?? We will all rightfully be hoping for a CFP invite.

I know this is a known and discussed thing in here ^^^ just seeing the resumes next to eachother makes it look more egregious. Every 5-2 SEC team is ranked. The Big Ten has six 5-2 teams unranked currently
Yet the Big Ten is statistically the stronger conference in the NIL era, dominating the SEC in both the CFP and bowl games

Wait for the CFP rankings. It’ll even things out a little.

The AP poll is as subjective and uninformed as they come. And the fact that there is a ranking even before any games are played makes it easy to stay in or hard to get in.

It’ll take years…maybe decades…of consistent B1G outperformance to change the narrative of the SEC being the best conference. Especially if it’s an unconscious adherence to the narrative.

Agreed, hopefully some of the public shaming they’ve done online this year of individual voters will fast track that a bit. But it’s kinda sad how little the voters know/care. 5-2 USC currently ranked behind 5-2 Michigan. Like if you follow college football at all those mistakes shouldn’t happen.

I agree though committee seems a lot more in touch with what’s going on.
