I think if I was Painter, I would have went small on us. Tomi doesnt play back to the basket that much. I would have went back to more of what they did last year with TKR at the 5. That would have allowed more versatility in guarding KW with the switches. KW torched TKR too but could have played out a little different maybe, especially against IU. It sounds like they did a little of that at IU.

I don’t know that Purdue is cratering so far as they are finding their level.
I know they were preseason #1, but they went 13-7 in conference last year (vs our very young, very injury/illness riddled 12-8) and lost 4 in a row at one point.
Their biggest offseason acquisitions were Cluff and Mayer. Both good players, but both redundant to their current roster. Cluff is a plodding PnR big who clogs the paint just like TKR, and while Mayer can hit shots, he really needs the ball in his hands to excel and obviously Smith is getting the ball for 35+ minutes a game. They needed a rim protector who ideally could stretch the floor and space and a big athletic 3 and D wing.
Maybe more so than any team, they rely on their Big 3 or 4 (depending on what you think of Cluff) to have super games in order to win. Why I picked Indiana last night. As great as Smith is, he’s human and he was devine against us. He was overdue to have a so so game, and he did last night.
Credit to Painter and the program, they always take care of business in the non con and that gets them a top 4 seed, which is why they’ve made so many sweet 16s the past 10-15 years. But I don’t see them winning it all or making the F4 because they will basically need 4 transcendent games in a row from Smith. He’s an absolute warrior and he could do it, but they just don’t have a lot of margin for error as currently constructed.

IMO, “hating Purdue” is most common among fans over 45 or under 30. If you are like me and your fandom began during the early 2000s, you never grew up to hate Purdue. MSU and Wisconsin were always our competition at the top of the league, and Purdue was actually really bad. Plus, when the Indiana rivalry hit its height, Purdue seemed like a case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Add in Weber’s fondness of and connection to Purdue, and they just weren’t on the hate radar.
I’ve definitely developed more of a dislike for them since 2020 and I feel their fans are infinitely more obnoxious than they ever were in past decades, but … for me, it will never approach Indiana/Iowa/Missouri levels.

I do thing we temporarily broke them. That was an emotional game for them and they played out of this world against us…and still lost. By 6!
TKR is fighting demons. Cluff is a big body stiff that does not shoot the 3 and is not a rim protector. Where is Fletcher??
They need to regroup and let Braden right the ship. He’s really good.

My hate stems from the bully ball they played back in the 80’s and 90’s.
My hate reignited in the last 15 years because their engineering program puts out propaganda that they are as good or better than UI.
And watching their fans here in Seattle. They are starting to resemble Michigan fans.

Old man yelling at cloud here... my take on Purdue's struggles having watched 5+ decades of basketball:
Big Tenning in late Jan and Feb is hard. For everyone. It's a grind. Purdue will likely sort itself out. Quickly. We Illini fans know what hitting a Jan or Feb skid (for a variety of reasons) feels like. Michigan blew chunks in mid-to-late Feb last year (I sat in Crisler and watched the Illini eviscerate them on March 2nd), then won the BTT and made it to the Sweet Sixteen.
People seem to forget that the path up the mountain through the conference slate always means fighting off hungry bobcats at the tree line. If you have the flu at the time you'll lose a limb.

Purdue is hateable but not the hatest.
I am not speaking for the entire over 45 crowd, but for me, I wouldn't call it Purdue hatred, but nice healthy dislike, but respect. You always knew that Gene Keady teams were going to be tough. Now Indiana and Bobby Knight, there is a team to hate, because he was just a bully. Iowa had Bruce Pearl, I don't need to say more.
I'm in this age demo and you have described my experience! My strongest dislikes have been Michigan, Iowa, IU, and Mizzou in some order. Obviously, rooting interest in any given game depending on how it may affect us in the standings, especially later in year.

Purdue lost 12 games last year. All they really added was "plowboy" Cluff ? And that made them the pre-season #1 ? Really ?
I'm also in this age demo so my "hated" B10 teams have historically been Indiana, Iowa and Michigan. But recent experiences with Purdue fans -- most recently at the game Saturday -- have elevated Purdue FANS to the top of my hated list. I like Matt Painter a lot, respect the hell out of Braden Smith and what they've accomplished in recent years, but the Purdue fanbase (at least in basketball) has evolved into an obnoxious and miserable bunch.
Same age demo and agree didn’t grow up hating Purdue, but as others have said they’ve been annoying the last 5 years or so. I tell myself that I’m annoyed by TKR’s antics and Fletcher’s flopping, but in reality I think it’s because they’ve been the one BIG program whose been a notch above us since we got rolling again circa 2020.
And I really like Painter and he seems like a genuinely good guy and not the toxic bully Knight was, but in this portal/NIL era, the Purdue fan base seems to have taken on a lot of the knight era IU attitude that they “do things the right way.” Players stay and develop, program is bigger than any one guy, team above all else, blah blah blah. Nevermind what they are missing this year is a 3 and D wing and they had Heide and Colvin on their roster last year who never really developed and both left for greener pastures. Edit: Also they had to break out the checkbook in a major way to keep Smith. He may have given Purdue a discount but he sure wasn’t cheap.
So the success + the sanctimony has made them annoying to me, but I don’t think I hate them.

Just looking at their team, I don't see it. Braden Smith can dice you up, but as a whole they just don't have the look or feel of a contender to my eye. TKR could make them better if he would just keep his head on, his nose down, and play ball. But he seems like an overly emotional, volatile player. Loyer has to be maddening for PU fans. They have a clear #1, then a bunch of unreliable guys who could be a #2. Not a recipe for deep tourney runs. If they get right in March, it's possible they could win 4, I suppose.
