Players have to stop fouling then.

Both teams were mugging constantly.

Purdue has been known for it. The reason Purdue fans want refs to swallow whistles so much is it helps their defense TREMENDOUSLY.
Partially agree. There were also a lot of phantom calls.

I love defense, but unfortunately the days of appreciating that part of the game have gone the way of the Dodo bird because offense is fun.

Our society (U.S.) is a click bait cell phone society now, and every league is feeding into that. It's all about baskets, runs, and goals.

That's why soccer still struggles for viewership here. Tik Tok > 0-0 for two hours.

It was kind of a blow out at home. It was a bit closer than the score indicated but Illinois isn't near the level of Marquette, and it wasn't really a close game.

I think Brad was wrong to be so confident about not having a point guard. Maybe Moretti can be that guy, but it's hard to win games without a single player at the most important position in the sport.
Didn't you read the post game thread? It was all spelled out there how we would have won if only Ty had layed the ball up instead of passing out for a three in the closing moments. Please try to keep up. \s

True, but that's an unfair comparison. He had the stat line he did because we couldn't stop him at all. If he is stopped, those opportunities get distributed elsewhere. The game doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Actually, now that I think about this... so you're saying if we limited Kolek to 6 points and 4 turnovers that everyone else on his team automatically plays better? In reality, it works in the opposite way that you describe. If the PG struggles, the whole team is affected. Isn't that what all of the "ZOMG we don't have a PG" people have been telling us?

Agreed... Edey is Mr. Elbow but his 3rd and 4th fouls were bogus. That being said, he should have fouled out with #5 but the refs called a foul on the 6'6" guy guarding him instead. Edey did get hacked a lot in the first half where the refs still ignored it. Some of the later fouls against the Tennessee bigs were kind of weak.

But overall, what I saw in that game was Tennessee scrapping (and fouling) on every possession on defense and getting away with a lot of stuff (despite the number of whistles), while a couple of Vols players were flopping at the other end of the court on minimal contact and getting weak foul calls on Purdue. Jordan Gainey and Santiago Vescovi should get Oscars for some of their acting... guarantee you there will be some flopping in the Illinois-Tennessee game.

It looked to me like Illinois' game plan was to limit 3 point attempts from Marquette. This left Kolek to be 1 v. 1 and not needing to kick out to where a double might come from.

Name checks out.

Sorry..if we don't take one from Tenn or FAU, the non-con is really disappointing. Our best win would be...Valparaiso? Or Missouri? Not going to help come selection sunday.

I do think we win at least 1/2 of those, so hopefully not an issue.

Kolek has taken 46 shots this year in 5 games. 18 of those were against us. Meaning that he took 40% of his shots in one game. He was 3/9 against Kansas. So yes, it seems that he knows when he is able to be successful and when he is not so he gives his team the best chance to win.

The point guard can struggle individually shooting, but still must lead the team, initiate the offense, and set the tempo which we want to play at. It's not all assists and turnovers. Ty brings his own matchup problems, but he is not a point guard. Playing people out of position has real effects on performance.

The fact we are even debating this is because Brad has failed to keep any guard talent here. Hopefully we can change that with Fears and Gill.

Rewatching some of the game. Goode is absolutely scared of being pressed. Watch how Nico handles the press vs pretty much everyone else. That's a real PG, despite any other flaws he has. Perfect example: with 6:28 left in the first, him and TJ perform an absolute clinic on breaking the press. The play that topped it off was Nico driving INTO the press, bringing three defenders to him and hit TJ in stride to get an easy layup.

All this to say, I think Ty is doing well enough so far, but when Nico returns I'd love to see him get more time.

I'm done discussing our PG situation for awhile.

I wouldn't have even mentioned our PG situation if not to support the fact that if Kolek struggled on offense and was turning the ball over a lot that it would be a huge net negative for them (and not a 'wash' as you had originally stated).

What? Huh? Ehhh?
That was a very winnable game and if we hadn't gone typical "dry stretch" in the 2nd half, we win.

Think it would, without saying, help every teams defense.....No?

But but 78 free throws?? We would get beat by 40.

Marquette has quickness and attitude but also shooting skills. Kind of Ty and Sencire who can shoot. Add DGL, Amani and Morez and we have a team!

Marquette is playing scared in the paint and keeps settling for 3 pointers, playing like that you can’t get Purdue in foul trouble without driving the ball.

Scared of the whistle, 7-1 on fouls thus far. Yes, they've found 7 times, but Purdue should have at least 5.

If FDU can shut Edey down, anyone can.

Its impossible to move past losing to 16 seed, especially in the regular season, but beating 3 of the top 11 teams in 3 days might be as close as you can get.

For sure. I think the only way to do it is to follow the Virginia model and win it all the next year.

MAYBE a final four is good enough but I doubt it.

Would be hilarious if they got a 1 seed again and lost to a 16 seed. 🤣
