Illinois of course controls its own destiny with a high profile matchup vs. Tennessee, but here are some games for teams above us that we could maybe jump in the rankings with a win on Saturday. As a reminder, we are #14 and I am going to skip #13 Tennessee for obvious reasons!

Tuesday, December 2
Iowa at #7 Michigan State
... MSU is likely going to pull this one out, but I am personally a believer in the Hawkeyes this year. I wouldn't look past this one as a potential big upset.

Friday, December 5
#11 Gonzaga vs. #18 Kentucky in Nashville, TN
... It's possible UK could jump us if we both win, but I think we would stay in front of them and both slide up past the 'Zags. Gonzaga is 7-1 and has looked great at times, but I think dropping a second straight game - with the last one being a loss by 40 (!!) points to Michigan - would be enough for us to jump them. With this being a de facto home game for Kentucky (in the same arena as our game the night before), I think a UK victory is decently likely.

Saturday, December 6
#10 Iowa State at #1 Purdue
... Decently likely the pollsters don't punish ISU too much for losing in Mackey, but if Purdue runs away with this one, we could jump the 'Clones with a win.

ACC/SEC starts tonight. Florida at Duke should be good. And UNC at Kentucky could be a decent watch.

I'm not impressed at all with Tennessee. They are looking extremely immature/childish/easily rattled against a 7-4 mediocre Syracuse team. Is it possible that a turnaround type situation could happen and they could look completely different in February and March? Sure. But teams that rattle in an away environment this easily generally don't finish in the top 20. That makes our game against them extremely important. I'm not feeling that a loss against this team will look very good in the long run.

To me, this is looking like a Tennessee team with no legs after Vegas. Sluggish, even lazy, on defense and in sets. Totally different team than the one who embarrassed Rutgers and beat Houston.

Tennessee has a couple guys out tonight, most notably their 3rd leading scorer JP Estrella (12 pts 5 reb) is out with sprained ankle

1) I’ll be so pissed if Tennessee loses at Syracuse … that would not be good for us in any way, IMO.

2) I literally hate how the networks insist on having the colors behind each team’s name on the ribbon exactly match each jersey. Like, Tennessee is in black and Syracuse is in white, but those aren’t their main colors. Ribbon should have Syracuse as navy background / orange font, and Tennessee should be orange background / white font. We aren’t dumb, we can figure out who’s in which uniform, lol…

Tennessee should be fired up to erase that embarrassing loss to KU when they peed down their legs down the stretch. Coming into this game with this poor mindset doesn't speak well for their bottle at all.
