Man, John Fanta (Big East PBP guy) makes Robbie Hummel look like a slacker. That guy works every night! He’s also Matt Foley’s long-lost brother.

Vanderbilt up 10 at Texas A&M with three minutes left. They will go to 19-9 if they win and I have to think they are a lock for the tournament with a big Quad 1 road win.

The ending of this Vanderbilt game is Exhibit A of the insufferable nature of many college basketball game in the final 5 minutes. We are at 2 1/2 hours, and still probably 10 more minutes. This has to change.

Watching the Butler St Johns game. Matta looks like that hip/back is really bothering him. I'm surprised that guy is still walking the sidelines. Holding his hip when he walks.

How does OSU shoot 73% in first half? USC looks defeated

St John’s is 25-4, and all 4 of their losses were by 3 points or less. 3 of those losses were in the final 5 seconds.
I don’t know how good they really are but they keep winning.

Wow. Just saw the ending to the MSU / Terps game.

I went to the game last night. Two very solid defenses and a completely ugly game wire to wire, but a classic grinder. Regarding Gillespie's long three with 5 secs remaining that fell short: Maryland had clawed back from 7 down with around 3 mins remaining largely by driving inside and drawing contact (and Gillespie was a perfect 11-11 from the line.) But I didn't think the three was completely ill-advised; my criticism is that Gillespie hadn't shot well at all (just looked, he was 2-9 from the field at that point) and shouldn't have kept the ball off the rebound. He had to take a long one because of coverage, and had it not hit short MD would have had a chance at a board, and MSU would never have gotten off a final shot. Other option was to drive, which would have resulted in one chance but perhaps contact and FTs. I would have opted for the latter but... heat of the moment and all.

Queen was muted (though he got a double-double), and Reese was next to useless. You hate to see that.

Anyway, he!! of a finish.

Eff Maryland. Bunch of douches
No matter how many times I attend a Maryland home game, and no matter the opponent, this applies to the fanbase in spades. Nasty people. Gotta cop to a fair bit of schadenfreude walking out of the arena and to the parking garage after that ending.

Oh... and we were surrounded by several groups of MSU fans in our section. They were well behaved.

How do you not go to the basket, take up time, and try to draw a foul? Incredibly bad decision-making.

I dunno, the sense of time at the end of the game can be pretty tight. He was open and got it off with 4.5 seconds remaining. You also have to realize that officials don't want to call a foul that decides the game, so getting a call is much less likely in those circumstances. There were potentially 2 help defenders if he drove and they collapsed well. MSU's heave came from Maryland's side of the court --not sure you can leave enough time for a rebound and not give the opposition a chance if they get it. Odds are to leave a couple seconds since you're on your side of the floor, but no guarantees obviously.

Sometimes a guy makes an incredible play.

^^^ That's the bottom line here. Holloman was off balance drifting to the left and well behind the logo. Made U.S. Reed's methodical half-court shot to take down Louisville in the 1981 Dance look like a mid-range jumper:

Yeah, I don't mind a jump shot there. Although I'm not sure a 30 footer was warranted. Unless you are on a heater, you don't shoot a shot like that. The benefit of shooting with around 5 seconds, is the chance for a put back. But when you shoot a long shot, you get long rebounds, which are outlet passes for the other team.

Spent a decent amount of time with MSU fans at the 2005 Final Four. A number of them stuck around for the title game and were supporting us (as I was supporting them in their game against UNC). Also went to the MSU-Illinois football game in 2000. Overall, good group of people. Have always enjoyed drinking with them.
