Despite much higher expectations, turns out this season is Turner 0-11 1997, Zook 2-9 2005, Beckman 2-10 2012, i.e., a complete rebuild. At least two of those guys had us winning 8+ games by their third seasons and the other one, who didn't, bears responsibility for this current roster.

Yup.... I think it will take at least 2 good recruiting classes, and perhaps a 3rd before we start seeing wins. I think Lovie and staff can certainly get that done, but it will take some really good recruiting to turn this thing around...

Sad. Watched last week and had tons of good feelings at the onset seeing it sold or near sold out and Lovie on sidelines. Oh well.

Our Oline was absolutely horrible in that game. A simple twist between a DT and DE and our guys are running into each other. Come on.

Not one player that took the field today looked good or even was interested in playing.

That first quarter of every penalty and call going WM way set the tone for the rest if the game. They jumped out fast on us, pairing that with most of the calls went there way and the game was pretty much over after that.

Look at the positive....we gained 10 yards on the ground, keeping Illinois from setting a record of single digit yardage gained in a pre season football game.

This team has such a small margin for error that it just can't afford to miss on potential big plays with dropped passes. Also very diasappointed to see the supposed strength of the team--the defensive line-- get so completely demolished by the WMU running game.

And recruiting is that chicken or the egg thing. Tough getting guys focused on a pro career or a winning college tour to join up with a sub par team. I've never been sure of how much attention these guys pay to any other plusses Illinois might have to offer. There's a reason some programs having great seasons year after year after year...

For sure.... They took control of the LOS at the start of the game, and never let go.... Not a good sign for what is supposed to be the strength of this team..

It's talent level but also talent type. This staff prefers high-upside athletes who are raw, need lots of coaching but can be molded to excel in specific roles. Beckman favored lower-talent grinders who played over their head who he tried to push hard and motivate. It's just a mismatch all around.

There was a Big 10 Team on the field today... shame it wasn't us.

One of the worst games I've ever been to. Right down there with the 2012 game against Louisiana Tech. Nothing really positive to reflect on. How much money did we give them to huhumiliate us?

Well... I said that i'd be ok with a loss and fewer than 50 yards of penalties. We squeaked in just under at 48.

:noidea:

Illinois has as much talent as Western Michigan but let their lines dominate the play. Getting a top coaching staff should allow them to build a scheme to utilize the talent they have.

As we saw today, we don't. They beat Northwestern too. NU was 10-2 last year. That WMU team is clearly better than many P5 teams.

Lovie's got A LOT of work ahead of him. I'm fairly confident next year will be even worse given the number of seniors we have on this roster...

You bring the coaches in because you trust that their scheme works. In the long haul we should feel good about Mcgee. That Petrino tree does pretty well offensively in college football. The problem is, no matter how hard you try, you can't make square pegs perfectly fit round holes. What you can do is recruit round pegs.

Yes. Giving Lovie time to recruit is our only way out of this. Beckman is a clown.

Memo to Josh Whitman: if you want the chance to develop Illinois into even just a mediocre program, please schedule future non-conference games against nothing but the absolute, historically bad FBS programs. I don't mean even middle of the road programs, I mean the dregs of the dregs. The only way this program can ever move forward is by getting to bowl games for several years in a row and the only way we can even have a chance of sniffing at bowl games is by winning all three of our non- conference games year after year. Historically bad teams are out there, we just have to find them.

B1G is mandating at least one game against Power 5 schools and no FCS games. On paper Mike Thomas and Jason Lerner did pretty well IMO in setting most schedules up. Have home and homes against USF, UConn, Virginia, Kansas, and Duke over the next decade. However when we scheduled Washington and UNC they were fairly mediocre too.

We have scheduled for the forseeable future in the weakest fashion that Big Ten rules allow.

It's not the Glen Mason heyday of cupcake scheduling anymore, but alas.
