As I said before, this performance does not give me hope for making the second weekend. I don’t see it. Especially with the in-game management from the coaches, the lack of killer instinct, the pee poor rebounding, and the inability to lock down opposing guards. Recipe for disappointment.

The first game opponent definitely has a scouting report to adhere to after today.

And what makes this worse is I don't think Wisconsin played that great...Missed shots, Missed FT's and poor defense and any decent team will beat us..

Brad Underwood team in March.
While others play better and peek.....illini consistently (for past 4 of 5 seasons) are running on fumes and playing like crap.

I guess we are still better then where we were pre underwood era. I hope zero hopes this team makes a sweet 16 or better.
If we could have paid players and they could change teams every year the pre-Underwood era would have been a lot better.

Tough game and a tough matchup for us. The good news is we likely won’t see a better pair of guards before the second weekend.

That said, loss is due to the following:
1. I think I saw after we pushed it out to 28-13 we were something like plus 7 or 8 on rebounds. We wound up getting outrebounded for the game and only got 6 of our misses back. That can’t happen against a team rated 200+ in defensive rebound rate.
2. I understand the emotions, but Kylan absolutely cannot pick up 2 fouls in the first minute. They have 2 guards who can go off and we lost the last time because we didn’t have anyone to stop them. Kylan sitting at the 19 minute mark virtually guaranteed one or both would get comfortable.

Oh and the refs were atrocious the last 10 minutes and OT. All Boyd or Blackwell had to do was flail and they got a whistle. We drove to the paint just as hard as they did, absorbed just as much contact as they did, and didn’t get the same whistle because we didn’t flail. With the way they were officiating Boyd and Blackwell, Adrejs layup to give us the lead in the last minute of regulation should have been an and one. And of course the phantom foul for Blackwell in the last minute of OT.

It’s easy to forget but we have closed out our fair share of games too. But my goodness, we just can’t seem to hit a free throw or get a block out when we need it in these losses, it’s just excruciating.

Don’t love it but it is what it is. If team regains their shooting stroke and finds their fight on the glass we could go on a run. We could also lose in the round of 32. We will see and we will see who we draw. A lot of it will come down to the matchup.
You keep telling yourself that. Setting yourself up for more disappointment. Do t blame the refs, don't blame the coaches. The players are the ones out there not stopping guards and

I mean...great - let's keep doing that. But when we get a double-digit lead after doing that, how about we crank up the pressure on their defenders and start getting to the line?

It should be absolute misery playing against us with a lead - we've got three guys who can do a good job getting to the basket, we're tall enough to pass over most defenses.....I cannot for the life of me figure out how that doesn't translate to running the opponent through the ringer for the first half of the shot clock and then forcing a decision to foul or not at the rim.
We are the tallest team with the best offense in division 1 basketball, except we have zero killer instinct

For all the talk about how good Fletch is and how great our conditioning is we always seem to be mentally exhausted at the end of the year. A lot of teams run an 8-man rotation and don't seem to fizzle out, heck when North Carolina made their Cinderella run a few years ago I believe they only ran 7 guys. Underwood isn't being fired, but if some other school is desperate enough to pony up the cash to get him to come I wouldn't be sad.
Hes our strength and conditioning coach not the teams psychiatrist fr

Longtime lurker of the board and just finally decided to give my 2 cents that no one will care about in my first post. Probably won't be the last as misery loves company. We just need to accept this is how it goes for us every year. The responses in postgame pressers, botching line-ups/sub patterns, starting off well to blow leads, not match-up hunting, being one-trick ponies, minimal adjustments, etc you name it. As Illinois fans, we should/can see this coming from a mile away. We can say fire Brad but then what? We've been through the peaks and valleys with different coaches. Unfortunately it is what it is. Time and time again, this is what will happen with Brad's teams.

I'm not in the practices or on the bench to know what's going on. However, time and time again, you'll see Tyler holding the clipboard and very engaged in the huddle with offensive concepts. That's all fine and grand but we never address the gigantic !!! Badger + Wolverine + any other opponent in the room that we are absolute traffic cones on opposite side of the ball.

Offensively, if we're not making 3's, we're absolutely toast. I don't care what the metrics say. When you have Rohde on Mirk and all you do is dribble up top and fire away a 3, you deserve to lose. That's not matchup hunting.

This probably won't go over well with some people here but sometimes you need to play fast and put the pressure on the defense. There's many times where we have the numbers to push in transition but we're so stubborn and adamant on slowing down the pace and giving the ball immediately to Keaton to walk it up. We aren't doing any favors to Andrej by playing slow at times. When he's in there, let him drive in open space, rather than telling him to get his against a set defense.

That's it. For now.

you all talk about how weak this team is but they were super clutch earlier in the season against great teams. no idea what's happened but it's terrible to watch. I'm hoping we make the sweet sixteen where i was hoping for a final four a couple months ago

I am sorry but we need to look at the fletch stuff, these teams are always exhausted by the end of the year.

I don't buy the argument the radio crew was making that this may be a blessing in disguise because we can rest. We just had a week off and we get this effort. Another week off isn't going to suddenly make this team tough enough to make a run. We peaked in January. We've lost 5 of last 9, that doesn't scream deep tournament run. It may end up a 14 over 3 seed upset.

Well in all fairness, an Illini radio team cannot be realistic and say we suck and we're in trouble

I think Keaton needs to rest. He isnt shooting 3s or free throws close to earlier this year and increased TOs, 1 of 6 from 3 today and key missed FTs.

Poor refs, 60% on FTs and missed front ends too and then giving up long rebounds gets you beat. Some of those calls were awful but have to hit FTs.

Plus Tomi and Z shot selection when they have struggled all year i just dont like at key moments. We were lucky Keaton had such a good look to tie at the end. I wish it had fell.
But as bad as the twins are from the outside, other than an occasional dunk, they’re worse inside. When you have 2 guys over 7’ and if they get a rebound they throw it back out instead of taking it up there is a problem.

Again Wisconsin proved that in today's game they were the tougher and grittier team. Illinois got a lead in both halves but could not maintain the lead. The 2 Wisconsin gtuards are very very good. I give credit to Wisconsin. And Illinois goes back to the drawing board. On a glass is half full concept. There is plenty of history of teams advancing very far in the NCAA tournament who flamed out early in the conference tournament.
We are 1-5 against the top 5 in the BIG. We haven't played well in the last month or so. I think we are who we are at this point, and that's a team that doesn't play well enough consistently enough to win more than 2 games in a row in the NCAAT.

#245
For the past 3+ months, we have been the lowest ranked defense among the top 15 or so teams. That's not a stat that gets you to a Final Four and is a state that makes you upset prone.

#247
Andrej gets on a roll first half gets subbed out. Ben plays 23 minutes. 0 points. Davis doesn’t rebound. Play Big Z 30 minutes. Tomi is lost. Knew we had to stop 2 guys and they go off for 70. Coaching is very very questionable right now

Here we go again …

9-31 from 3 … Yet we just KEEP CHUCKING …

Davis and Mirk the ONLY guys to make more than one three …

We can’t guard anyone … Give up 70 to these Wisco guards … Bam lockdown defender ??? GMAFB … Horrible !!!!!

THEY HAVE TWO GUYS and we let them TORCH US !!!!!! AGAIN !!!!!! NO ADJUSTMENTS from Game 1 !!!!!!!!!

OUTREBOUNDED by these dudes ?????? CANNOT HAPPEN !!!!

I’ll let the tourney play out … And I hope we absolutely kill it but IMO it’s Second weekend or there needs to be serious discussions about the future and whether that includes Brad or not … 1 for 9 on second weekends just simply doesn’t cut it at this program …

This end of season/down the stretch performance has been flat out UNACCEPTABLE !!!!!!!!

To the “but Brad has consistently won in the regular season” crowd, I say:

Good is the enemy of great.
