Sigh... His individual offensive contribution is 0.891ppp on 27.9% usage. That's not "not great with context", that's horribly inefficient and a possession black hole. He is in the bottom 1% of all NCAA players in effective field goal percentage. He is in the bottom 1% of all NCAA players in turnover rate. He's in the bottom 1% in 3pt percentage, and the bottom 3% in 2pt percentage. He doesn't get to the free throw line, and he doesn’t rebound. But aside from that, his assist rate is excellent. So he's got that going for him.
I'm not sure why we must pretend he's been anything other than completely unplayable. He played a single good game this year against Minnesota. It was also the only game this season he played with any defensive effort and within the offense. That's it. He had many opportunities to earn minutes in game and in garbage time. For a bench player, you need to excel in those situations to get playing time and be part of the rotation. He has done the opposite.
At some point it's on you as a player to perform. And even when the shot isn't falling to show effort and intensity and play within the framework of the team. If you don't do that, you're simply not going to see the court. Period. So no, I'm not sure what additional context is needed here. It's not too dissimilar from last season where someone wanted us to play Carey Booth significant minutes to help our team. It's disregarding reality
All of the numbers and analytics people want to use to support your opinions when applicable are amusing, but they don’t beat the eye test.
My eyes tell me, at Illinois player they want to play play and others who were clearly good at other spots get worse when here.
Petro was an MVP candidate in the same league as the Ivisic twins. This was last year and now he is unplayable to the point where he can’t get 10 minutes a game to when our two year starter is out? We are playing a 4 at the 1?!?!
He is a very good pick and roll player and penetrates the lane. All of the garbage minutes and minutes with walk ons would result in better numbers if with spent more time with
competent lineups. They might not reflect Adriatic League MVP like numbers here, but definitely should be decent enough to rest Wagler a bit.
You mentioned Carey Booth. he looked worse than Petro while here and averages less minutes than Petro. He could get 19 min a game at ND and over 24 min at Colorado State, but only 5 min here and couldn’t help the team. He was unplayable for a year and now somehow averages 10 pts on 56% from the floor and 41% from 3.
And what is with this word unplayable? It is the coaches decisions to not play him. I haven’t heard anything from BU about the kid being “unplayable”. Even our slow, out of position, bad angle, consistently wrong angle taking players and consistently beat on D players get plenty of time.
If Petro was given the same grace as a couple other players instead of quickly yanked and benched, I’d be willing to bet that as a pro, he’d get just as Many rebounds, still make the same amount of TO, and probably eventually consistently score more points than some of our guys. I base this off my eyes, and not skewed numbers that tell a completely different story compared to numbers from a year ago from a professional league.
As far as his D and effort, he is 6’1 and 6’2 in a lucky day. His instinct from Europe and a professional league isn’t to crash the boards and let the other team run transition. Drop coverage on the p-n-r and chasing your man from behind then fight big guys when you’re on one of the tallest teams in the NCAA might take a bit of adjustment for a professional euro league player to make
