THIS!!!

It’s the complete lack of consistency between Big Ten games that makes it so hard to compete in this league and then for Big Ten teams to compete well in the tournament. It’s extremely difficult for players to know what is and isn’t allowed in the game. And the crew you get assigned on any night can really shift the outcome based on the differences in the way teams tend to play (physical vs not physical). And way worse IMO, is the lack of consistency even within the same game itself. What’s not called a foul in the first half very well may be in the second half.

Not to mention all the strange headscratching calls that the officials make (last night had several of these) that seem to just be them wanting attention.

There’s just absolutely zero accountability from the league office to address this. It’s really embarrassing for the Big Ten.

Teams don't just replace dudes like Boswell and Andrej with equivalent talent when they go down with injury, it is unreasonable to expect we just have 5 star McD AA level talent that also happen to have 5,500+ minutes of power conf experience waiting on the bench to come in when these guys have injuries

Now, should Brandon Lee & Mihailo Petrovic have played 12-16 minutes last night to give guys a breather? That I agree with
I think 2-6 minutes might have helped everyone else down the stretch!

We've now lost three B1G games by a combined 8 points with two games going into overtime. In two games we had a chance to win or tie at the buzzer and had an even better chance to win in regulation. The other game, a kid hit a fading three with a hand in his face to win at the buzzer.

I understand that some people may be frustrated, and yes we should have won, but Wisconsin is 9-4 now in the B1G. We are down two of our top 5 players. Missed free throws, poor defense, and turnovers are a sign of a tired team, not a bad team.

Not to mention the insane officiating buffoonery we've had the last two games. DJ had at least three terrible calls last night including an obvious 10 second call. Be mad we lost, but try to think a little deeper on why we struggled.

If Izzo can throw that Denham Wojcik guy out there for a few minutes to spell Fears, we should be able to buy a few minutes rest for Keaton by throwing Petro out there. As much as Petro may be a recruiting "miss" and not worthy of significant rotation minutes, any spot minutes to rest Keaton would be helpful.

Before the season started, I think most, if not all of us would be thrilled being 20 - 5 and 11- 3 at this point. It's just the way we got here that's quite interesting lol.

That is quite a striking comparison. At what point does it stop being “bad luck” though? This has been a pretty consistent pattern. Guys getting dinged up in practice, wearing down and getting injured late in the season, etc. Something for the analytics guys on staff to dig into. Are we not allowing for proper rest? Are minutes distributiions throughout the season being considered? I’m sure they are but are adjustments being made to remedy? It can’t all be bad luck can it? All these teams play a similar schedule as we do.

I think a precise "statistical point" to definitively rule out "bad luck" is probably too complex to figure out.

But, we're just looking at the top teams in the league so it kind of tracks. Teams with more injuries probably don't perform as well. So if we go down the rest of the conference we can see our injury luck is probably more middle-of-the-pack (so its probably just pure coincidence that the top teams are also super duper healthy... except us, I guess?):

Games missed by starters -

Maryland: 22
Oregon: 21
Minnesota: 18
USC: 18
Washington: 17
UCLA: 14
Ohio St: 11
Penn St: 7
Northwestern: 5
Rutgers: 4
Indiana: 3
Iowa: 0

Lot to figure out … Step one is getting healthy …

Quite a few areas tonight … Pathetic …

Going to MSU what did everyone in the basketball world know you had to do to win? Stop or slow down Fears. Our best guy to do that was injured. Kylan on the floor is a 8 to 10 point W.
Badgers have 2 guys: Boyd and Blackwell. Shut them down, heck shut one down, and odds of winning are about 99%. Plus, they're not overly tall (6'3 and 6'4" but in addition to good 3 point shooters, they are quick, slashers. So, who would be our best options to stop or just slow down those 2? Bozwell and Andrej. Either one of them play and this is a 12+ pointi win. Which it was looking like until they started explointing who we had on them with tired legs.
I would have liked to see Lee or Petro with some mins but not more than 5 to 8. Maybe just 2 or 3 before every TV timeout just to give our guys a little extra time to catch their breaths. Neither one of them would have stopped or slowed down Boyd or Blackwell much if played more than that.

Lots of things had to go wrong last night for us to lose. Not necessarily blaming the coaching staff but I don’t think they get an A for their approach either. 2 things I might have done differently:

1. Been beaten to death but I would have played Lee at least a few more minutes especially after we built the 12 point lead. I recognize the one minute he played was a quick 5-0 run for Wisconsin, and unfortunately Mirk just didn’t have it as a ball handler last night but we pretty clearly ran out of gas the last 7-8 minutes. An extra minute or 2 of rest for Keaton may have allowed him to make one more free throw.

2. With the 12 point lead, I would have quit collapsing on Boyd/Blackwell and stayed home on their shooters. Yes Rapp was 31% coming into the game so scouting report says take away the layups but he was clearly hitting them last night. We couldn’t stop them but they also couldn’t stop us and I would have made them come back on us with 2s instead of 3s.

Still think we are primed for a run in March if we can get everyone healthy and integrated in time, but sadly probably snake bit out of a conference title yet again.

Yeah we're saying the same thing. Replacing guys 2 and 4 (as an example) with guys 9 and 10 is obviously going to be a downgrade. The point is you should take the opportunities you have to get 9 and 10 some game action against real opponents.

Here’s what I thought was one of, if not the most pivotal sequence in the game.

It was 74-67 with just over 5min remaining.

I’m not sure how this isn’t a foul:

In that same sequence within seconds, they call this goaltend on Z:

I’m not great at dissecting goaltends, so y’all try figuring that out, but that was such a massive swing to go from what should’ve been a 9pt game to a 5pt game.

Wisky players did this multiple times last night. Tomi was more or less thrown into the the cheerleaders on the other side at one point and nothing was called.

Then they call these little hand checks on drives that I don't think anyone would notice without a replay.

No, we know exactly which bench guys are able to contribute. When healthy, we have an 8 man rotation. Last night showed Underwood would rather play 6 than have anyone outside the top 8 take meaningful minutes. He clearly trusts nobody outside of Ivisic x2, Stojakovic, Mirkovic, Wagler, Boswell, Davis and Humrichous. If you're not one of those players you will not be on the court unless we're up by 30
Yeah that very much seems to be the case but imo that's a problem.

Illini win ... national champions!
Illini lose ... season is over!

Can't let the highs get too high and the lows get too low. They played without two starters and only a six man rotation. They played back to back overtime games and guys got tired. They're human and mental and physical mistakes are going to happen when you're fatigued. Everything will be okay. Just need to be peaking in March.

Yeah but that is a goaltend. The ball cannot be over the cylinder at all.
There were a few other misses that were pathetic. Z had a putback and possible and 1 but was called a jumpball and wasnt that took that away. We failed to score once corrected. The out of bounds to start the OT was a joke. Even so the free throws and BU not playing a PG even 5 minutes to rest Keaton or get in the lane or playing through Tomi when they couldnt stop him from scoring or getting others open looks was a joke. Hummel bacically beat that horse questioning Brad most of the game. Sometimes it is so frustrating to watch how stubborn Brad is to in game adjustments changes to Tylers or his plan from pregame may need to be adapted a bit

What I’ve noticed with Brad Underwood if he doesn’t like you as a person for whatever reason you won’t play and eventually he will run you off the team. Tre White is case in point. Tre white wanted to come back to Illinois this year but Brad didn’t like Tre personally. Tre White is at Kansas and is balling out. I would rather have Tre White than Petro or Andrej. DGL wanted to come back but he was also ran off the team by Brad. DGL is killing at UNLV . I would rather have DGL than Petro and Andrej . If Tre White and DGL is on this current roster. Illinois is undefeated. Stubborn Brad pisses away another Big Ten regular season championship. If Brad doesn’t make the sweet 16 this year I’m done. Nine years as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at The University of Illinois and ONE sweet 16 and One Elite 8 is totally unacceptable.

Rebounding, ft's, turnovers..a change of almost any one of which could have won the game.. and BTW, how is Blackwell not an Illini??

The whole front row last night was not participating in wig night … Spent more time on their phone than watching the game … No fire …

It’s an absolute joke … They just go so they can make posts and everyone on the dang social media can see where they are …
Collect their phones when they go into the game and they get them back at the end. If they are sitting yank them and put in a replacement. Have analytics just like everywhere else you get seating based on your performance. Done.
