Iowa beat Minny there last night 108 - 60. Yes, Iowa can hold another team down. The Steph Curry/Larry Bird combo Caitlin Clark had another triple-double scoring 33. She is now only 18 points away from the all time NCAA total scoring record set by Pistol Pete.

Should be an asterisk there since he didn't have the 3 point line. He would have had a zillion more points.

The game is meant to change otherwise we'd still be playing with peach baskets and be amazed that a team got to 50. Give Pistol Pete his will deserved flowers, but don't do it by nitpicking Caitlin Clark's accomplishments. I hate that she's bringing good press to Iowa basketball, but she's good for the sport and female participation, full stop.

The whole Pete Maravich v Caitlin Clark discussion is fascinating to me to I dug into it a little bit:

Shooting % by Year

Caitlin ClarkPete Maravich
Year 446.9%44.7%
Year 347.3%44.4%
Year 245.2%42.2%
Year 147.2%NA

Pete Maravich averaged 38.1 field goal attempts per game and Caitlin Clark has averaged 19.9 field goal attempts per game.
Pete averaged 44.2 points per game compared to Caitlin's average of 32.1 points per game.

Overall, it took Pete A LOT more shots to get to a higher average points per game than Caitlin and he did this having a worse shooting percentage and without a 3-point line (I would have thought his shooting percentage would be higher). So, I think this basically makes the 3-point line argument irrelevant as Caitlin is a better shooter even with a more difficult shot (from a percentage perspective). Maybe he took longer range shots back then but I couldn't find a shot dispersion shot.

So, I'm absolutely rooting for Caitlin to break Pete's record since she is a better shooter and doesn't just "chuck" the ball up.

I don't care about Maravich vs Clark comparisons. Maravich was incredible, Clark is incredible. Karl Malone has more points than Jordan and Kobe, doesn't mean I think he is better. Getting records like this even at the collegiate level mean you are a legit scorer, stayed consistent and likely stayed healthy.

I have no knocks on Clark. Only beef I have over the years is when the Iowa coach leaves Clark in the game during blowouts to pad the stats.

When did I nitpick? So far, Caitlin has been a great high school & collegiate ball player. All I am saying is that it is hard to compare stats when the rules are different between eras.

Yeah I think most of us agree with she will make more money off the court whether Iowa/WNBA

Honestly Clark is just something different we haven't seen in the ladies game. The NBA game has changed and the way Clark plays resembles more of the NBA game now.

Clark is the face for the women's collegiate game. Not saying it will happen but if the WNBA markets it correctly she might be the face for the WNBA plus a worldwide market. WNBA has paid less than the international market(still will) but they are slowly trying to increase the payscale. No better time than bringing in possibly the biggest star ever. I don't watch much WNBA but I would be onboard watching more if Clark is playing.

Like recruits from high school to college to the professional level....just never know until the time comes. I think Clark will excel
As someone who has said since she was in high school that her passing is the best part of her game, Caitlin Clark's WNBA floor is as an excellent pass-first point guard. I know people love to fawn over her logo 3s, but she's one of the best players I've ever seen in terms of straight-line long passes (more commonly called the "get-ahead" pass) and in making a cross-court pass. Her ability to read the game and understand passing angles is up there with Larry Bird for me.

Even if she only hits her floor, she'll have a long and successful professional career. But I'm awfully sure she will have a career well above her floor.

Unfortunately Caitlin's defense looks like Peter Maravich as well. I think Indiana is going to have to hide Caitlin in zone. Or maybe with normal usage rate (she is averaging 23 shots per game, 14 are 3 pg attempts ) she will have more energy to play defense.

Agree with most of this

She forces stuff at times. Might change once she is surrounded with Boston and better surrounding cast. Keep the turnovers down but yeah I think she excels.

Quite the Event - #2 Ohio State at #6 Iowa at Noon on Fox. Caitlin's last home game needing only 18 points to surpass Pistol Pete's all-time scoring record,

Watching Caitlin getting closer to breaking the record. It feels like watching a horse win the triple crown or the cubs win the series. Just a big time event in history that you want to be able to say you saw it live.

I think it's fair to say that Carver-Hawkeye has a better atmosphere than it will have next Sunday for the Illinois-Iowa men's game. :)

I had to chuckle a little bit that Clark broke the scoring record on a technical foul free throw a couple of minutes after she had a 38-footer go off the front rim.

She is an incredible player and one of the best things that has happened to women’s sports in the past 10+ years, but comparing a man’s record to a woman's record is ridiculous. So if Caitlin played for the Iowa men how many points a game would she score? Or on the flip side, what if Pistol Pete played on the women’s team at LSU back in the day? Again, the best women's college player but no way she could play against men.

It's pretty obvious to anybody that a player in the modern era of CBB (or any sport for that matter) has a definitive advantage for career records of any type. She has scored the most points of any CBB player ever. Also played in far more games than a player from decades ago. Similar to MLB people bragging that player X has "the most postseason rbi's". How many postseason rbi's would Mantle, Mays, or Aaron have if they played in the same number of postseason games?
These records are for entertainment purposes only.

Also comparing Clark or any female athlete to a man is a tiresome take. No she couldn't compete at a high level against men. But that's not the point. She competes against people just like her and excels. Give her her due without the condescension please.

I have to admit, I haven't heard this one trotted out in a long time to try and denigrate a female athlete's accomplishment. I guess stuff from the 80's really is coming back around.

Now if you wanted to challenge the hoopla on the basis that Pete set his record in less games and without the benefit of the 3 pt. arc, fair enough. But you left nuance well behind you.

Don't forget she's also using a smaller ball.

Totally agree. Have always really enjoyed watching Clark play to the point where an Iowa women's game is now getting close to must-see TV for me, which never would have never been on the radar before she came along with the flair she plays with.

But I noticed yesterday for the first time, and it's something others have brought up before and I didin't think much of, but now it is getting annoying to me to watch her complain so much about the officiating -- especially when she definitely is getting the benefit of the calls big time. Ohio State probably would have lost anyway but they had no chance yesterday with the officiating in Iowa City. Maybe it's just a McCaffrey thing rubbing off on her, or she's like LeBron and other great players who do this too often, but found her whining really annoying yesterday especially when she should clearly have been called for a technical on one exchange and instead on two different occasions Ohio State got teed up.

Not to be the conspiracy guy, but I will be watching Iowa in the NCAA tournament to see if opponents have to win 8 on 5. For obvious reasons it's going to be good for TV and NCAA to have Clark in the tournament as long as possible.

I'm right there with you, she has been an incredibly unlikeable likable player this year. For some reason she blows a lot of shots around the rim and after every one she throws her arms in the air and the majority of the time the replay shows no contact. It's a bummer that she has that young Luka whining in her game since the rest is really enjoyable to watch.
