Illinois State is going to announce today the hiring of KU assistant coach Tim Jankovich.

The bloggers on KU's fan page want Dee hired as the assistant....

Re: Jankovich new Illinois State coach per Jason King (updated)

I don't see this affecting the team at all, as he'll be on the bench for the rest of the tournament. I bet the players are probably happy for the guy more than anything.

As for assistants, I'm sure Self will find someone good. I'm really hoping though that within the next few years we can get a guy like Dee Brown on the staff, which IMO would push our recruiting up to UNC levels - especially if we have some tournament success.

Hey was pretty loyal to Bill Self when he moved from Illinois to Kansas so i don't know. I think he would be great in a position like that but not anytime soon. He will be in the league for a while then make a decision like this.

"I lived in Chicago for 14, 15 years, so I'm used to it. Most definitely want to stay there after college"
- Dee Brown

I doubt Dee will be an assistant at KU, since he doesn't "rep" Kansas.... he "reps" Illinois!

I've said a zillion times how I'd love to have a revered former Illini player as an Illini assistant. Dee would be superb, but won't be available any time soon, if ever. My ideal choice is Ken Battle. After that, I'd look favorably on Stephen Bardo or Kendall Gill. Battle would be off the charts, a near mythical figure, filled with passion, on fire for the University, and, so far as I know, squeaky clean.

Don't you think he could recruit a little? If he can coach, he'd immediatly become the heir apparent. With Battle around the team, I don't think we'd lack leadership and I don't think he'd countenace indifference.

Did Weber play college hoops?

Dee would be fantastic from a recruiting standpoint - we wouldn't even need him to coach. Just recruit the Chicago area, and pop his jersy once in a while for the crowd. :)

I'm all for Battle to be on the bench and in practice, but especially to recruit the Chicago public leagues.

My sentiments precisely. The guy is walking, talking charisma, he has stayed close to the program, he's solid in every way. On the recruiting trail, I think he'd be dynamite.

He and his family come to the YMCA I work at every week. The dude has like 7 kids. Maybe I'll bring this up the next time he comes in.

'Fev, I've wondered the same thing, why no previous player on the bench, surely if we struggle so bad in Chicago recruiting, a Chicago player is who we need, someone everyone knows, Battle or Brown, that has to be the way to go, Dee right now is pursuing other interests, and getting paid quite well I'm sure, but if he loves Illinois as much as he says he does, and I believe him, this should be a viable career choice. I don't know much about Battle.

Even if Dee never plays more than 5 minutes a game in the NBA, it would be better money than an assitant's pay at Illinois. He can probably stick around the league for another few years (unless of course he finds a way to beat out all the incoming rookies) and still make some decent dough in Europe.

But an assitant position would help jump start his dream of becoming a head coach. Either way, I hope he ends up doing something more at Illinois!

I read somewhere a long time ago that the reason Battle hasn't been hired by UI is because he never got his degree, and they require this for assistants.

Back to this statement regarding KU.... 'push our recruiting up to UNC levels'?? Isn't KU's recruiting already on par with the best programs in the nation?

KU's recruiting is really good--they're almost like an all-star team this year--but UNC's recent recruiting is in a class of its own (think Oden, Conley, and Cook to OSU, only every year or every other year) that KU fans want to break into, I suppose. UNC does run some spectacular talent out there. Personally, I think Kansas is just about there, and I don't see Dee Brown making them recruit any better--if only because Dee is so strongly associated with the Illini that him recruiting for KU would just be so very weird. Seriously, can you even imagine that? He's like a god at Illinois.

It seems like there are three areas for illinois recuriting:
Chicago and its suburbs: Weber is ok in the burbs but I guess the old guard hates him so we need somone to get in there
The rest of Illinois: Talent is pretty much in central illinois and we do a very good job in peoria
The rest of the country: We need to pull some talent out of other states like Tx, Carter and Williams were both from there, or we need some of Ohio's talent or MI or Missouri

So basically if we could get an assistant who could get Chicago we would be set. However, that recruiter needs to be a good coach also.A guy like Bardo or Battle would be great. Or how about hiring Simeon's coach. He has two state championships in a row, no doubt it doesnt hurt to have Rose. He cant be that bad of a coach. He is part of the new guard and knows how to relate to the chicago's talent.

Exactly what I was thinking, maybe an internship or two? :D

Going in a different direction, Rob Judson is looking for a job (after getting the ax at NIU). Our recruiting was, I think, better before he left. Do we bring him back, especially if our Numero Uno assistant (Jay Price) gets his own head coaching gig (which I read somewhere he was in the running for).

I'd be all for Dee or Kenny coming back, but Dee's a little busy being a pro right now.

If by "Dee" you meant "Danny Manning," you're right! KU just hired Manning as their assistant coach in charge of recruiting.
