Never played at PSU.. was only ever a verbal commitment. I think the original fact had more to do with someone who was officially on the PSU roster.

Welcome aboard. That's a much needed addition.
Even if Illinois doesn't play in a bowl game in the next 4 years, it is still better to play somewhere not associated with child rape.

Can't blame him....why would anyone want to play for Penn State. Maybe Dick Vitale can send all his younger relatives there.

PSU should join the ACC so Vitale can worship them too. Just like his Dukies, now PSU has a sex abuse scandal.

This kid made a great decision - too many of these athletes want to go to the top program that offers them - and they don't realize the competition, and never develop because they can't get off the bench. He's going to a program where he can play right away and will have the chance to develop into an NFL player. We are [producing NFL talent partly because of our lack of depth, and our top recruits are getting early playing time.

Putting my own interest in making our team better aside, I'm most glad that we're giving this kid a route out of State College.

Not already announced, but rumors never suggested he was coming to Illinois.

He once had a top 3 of Oklahoma, Illinois, and Cincinnati, but the only school that seems to be getting a serious look from him is Oklahoma.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Nowicki plans to make the move to Illinois this weekend, he said by phone Thursday from Penn State.

"(The transfer) wasn't all because of the scandal," Nowicki said. "It just wasn't the same as when I got here. I wasn't feeling it anymore. It wasn't for me.

"I liked the family atmosphere (Illinois) had as a team. The coaches are there for their players no matter what. All that together was a great package for me. It's a team on the rise. They're going to be a great team in the future, and I want to be a part of that."

From what I understand, when it comes to scholarships, this is a free year. You can sign a PSU player even if you are at your full complement of scholarships. That is how USC was able to sign the running back even with the reduced scholarships they have. A school must have them on a regular scholarship for the 2013 season.

and, if you go over the 85 this year, next year you must be under by the same number. I do not think we were at 85 before Ryan came over, so this has no real effect on us other than any scholarship does. he basically is considered a member of our 2011 class, who simply used his RS-Frosh year at PSU

I didnt think any school on probation or reduced scholarship limits was able to use the relaxed rules. USC must have been under the 85 limit , or whatever limit they have.

Welcome to the Illini family Ryan.

What position will Ryan play and where will he fit in on our depth chart?

Ryan's Scout profile from when he was being recruited said he could potentially play either guard or tackle.

My Athlon Big Ten 2012 Preview didn't list Ryan in Penn State's projected two-deep for offensive linemen.

Illinois was selling Nowicki on starting out at OT, while Washington and Arizona State were looking at him as a guard. We will get a clearer idea in a few weeks.

Here's the official release, released this afternoon-
Quote:
Offensive Lineman Ryan Nowicki Transfers to Illinois

Former Nittany Lion Will Be Eligible to Play Immediately

Illinois head coach Tim Beckman announced on Monday that offensive lineman Ryan Nowicki (Cactus HS/Glendale, Ariz.) has transferred to Illinois for the 2012 season after spending last season at Penn State University. Nowicki reported for training camp on Sunday along with the rest of the Illini and went through Monday morning's practice with his new teammates. He will be immediately eligible to play in 2012.

"This gives Ryan an opportunity to play at the state school of where he lived as a young boy," Beckman said. "Ryan grew up in Chicago and still has many family members living in the city. We are glad to have him on our team for this season, and we are excited to see him compete in Rantoul this week."

Penn State players react to transfers

Transferring from Penn State is one thing, but transferring within the Big Ten?

"That's a coward move," senior cornerback Stephon Morris said.

Nine former Penn State players have transferred to other schools in wake of the NCAA's harsh sanctions against the university. Backup offensive tackle Ryan Nowicki is the only one to depart for a Big Ten team -- Illinois.

Morris has been outspoken about Nowicki's departure, tweeting August 2: "One thing u don't do is Jump from big ten school to another big ten school."

^^^^^^

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Do Penn State players not realize how lucky they are to even have a team this year? How about they show some humility and shut the h*** up. Whining only makes their program look even more pathetic

Kind of shocked that a PSU player would transfer to Illinois even under the circumstances…Quality of other players…coaching…fans..stadium. tradition..PSU still has more going for it vs illinois..I look forward to attending the Illinois PSU game…Because on game day I can walk up to the ticket counter and buy a ticket…the fans are fairly polite and not to rowdy. The stadium is small so I usually get a decent seat. And best of all PSU usually wins.. After sending 8 coaches to poach some PSU players Illinois must be proud that they landed one..Better than expectations probably..congrats…and good luck at the game.

No doubt my PSU friend. Winning is the most important thing in the whole wide world. More important than.. anything. Good luck September 29th, you'll probably win again
