But remember, he has also spent the summer training in Indiana - so shd be better than the average incoming recruit of comparable ability.

Of course, the fact that Indiana let him go tells us he is clearly not at the same level as Yogi Ferrell or Hollowel. May be better than Jurkin (Jurkin and Hanner Perea come from the same program - so he may have been retained to keep Hanner Perea happy).

I think the main test from groce's point of view will be if he has a handle. If he does, he instantly becomes our #2 PG and can play in 2012.
I've watched Yogi and Hollowell play the last few years. Hollowell is going to be a star. Also watched Patterson and he's a scrappy bulldog, something this program has been lacking. If there's room, I'd like to see him in orange.

He was enrolled in summer classes at IU so he would have to be a transfer if Im not mistaken and would have to sit a year

Gosh forbid if Patterson is one to "crack the bubble". We would never hear the end of how he couldn't get into IU but he got into UI.
Thanks but no thanks, but I would take Matt Roth for a year as designated shooter.!!

Not sure he is a PG though or even a combo guard. I believe he played more SG/SF in HS and AAU. Probably comparable to Brandon Paul, but maybe not quite as athletic.

Not as athletic as Paul but has far better handles than Paul has or ever will have. He would fit well in the system.

If this is the case, I don't see the benefit to us. Bringing him on board ties up a scholarship for 4 years. There are probably better uses than another kid that can not provide an immediate impact. Even if he could play immediately, I would want to carefully weigh the use of that scholarship against using it for other potential recruits in the pipeline.

Why the interest in him then, especially if he's not a PG? If we land Hill and either Nunn or Brown or another 2G in 2013, we don't need RP.

I think Ron Patterson will be deciding today if he goes the prep school route (likely Brewster) or enrolls in a 4-year college. He doesn't have a lot of time to make a decision.

I am not so sure. Indiana most likely gave him a clean transfer permission. That is the least they could do.

From reports, he is academically cleared to attend a 4 year school. Indiana just had some other stipulation that he didn't meat. Sounds to me like a cop-out to avoid oversigning. If he gets into Illinois its because he meets the qualifications. This is hardly a player or a situation that Groce would chance getting in any trouble over. I'd love to have a player that can D up as well as him on the roster.

If they did that then I think he is worth going after but not if he cant play til next year. Although we need to take commits when we can.

When he signed at IU he was a four star SG rated number 65 per rivals. He slipped in the rankings to about 120 but still is a talent.

Final Rivals was 131 and 3 stars. Yes he did slip from signing day.

A game where Patterson and D. Jackson went against each other. I think Patterson coming here might help land Jackson.

Little more to it than that. Simple summer enrollment does not trigger transfer status, but receiving athletics aid to attend the summer term (which is generally the case, especially with men's basketball players) does. That said though, an exception to that rule is available if the prospect is denied admission to the institution.

Could be an opportunity for immediate eligibility here, depending on the kid's specific facts @ IU.

Wow!

I am not usually impressed with recruiting videos, but holy cow. This just got me way too excited. I can see this kid leaving early easily.

The move at the 2:00 is jaw dropping. His shot is great, but I am more impressed with the way he takes it to the basket. He is always under control and finished at the hoop with great strength, yet his touch is fantastic.

Personally, I agree with you and would rather go with a guy like Dee, but a majority of the former players will be back overseas playing by then.
I think it would have a positive effect, but I just don't think you go down that road. There have to be other good options. Why not bring in Derek Harper (I realize Rose was named largely because he will already be there) or another Illini great, or if you want to use someone from either one of the teams, find a guy who maybe has ties that "did it right."

But he can't pass....
I, as well, was very impressed. Usually not to impressed because they are just highlights but you can't tell the speed was there, the strength was there and the form....
