RT @slmandel Penn St must "appoint an independent, NCAA-selected Athletics Integrity Monitor, who will oversee compliance with the agreement. "

RT @CharlesRobinson The 4 year bowl ban and 4 year scholarship cap basically guarantees Penn State will get zero top echelon recruits for the next four years.

RT @schadjoe Emmert says no price can repair damage of Sandusky but that inaction will not be tolerated in NCAA athletics

I'm listening to Emmert now and am confused about the scholarship reduction. What he read was that they would be reduced from 25 to 15. That is a reduction of 10. How are they reporting 20? And what is initial vs total (as reported by Fischer).

RT @ClayTravisBGID Penn State has signed a consent decree to penalties. That means the university will not appeal, worked in concert with NCAA.

Agreed. I was jotting down notes and wrote 25 to 15 for four years... not sure where the 20 being reported is coming from.

It is still a major loss of scholarships.... and crippling of a program.

I was confused at first too but I think I understand it now.

Basically, per year they can only bring in 15 new players but the total number of players on scholly can never exceed 65 whereas usually it's 85. So say they are at 65 and have 12 graduating SR's. Even though 15 is the max they can bring in, for that year they can only bring in 12 as they aren't allowed to go over 65. I hope that's right.

I guess Dimke can feel a little better about that missed FG last year, considering it didn't cause the opponent to win!

I honestly don't know if this is too harsh or not harsh enough of a penalty. I mean, a 4 year bowl ban, and that many lost scholarships is a HUGE blow to any program. Will PSU be able to recover from it? Quite possibly not. But considering what happened, I don't know if any punishment short of complete termination of the PSU football program could be considered justice.

I will say this though, I don't think the NCAA went soft on PSU, as they shouldn't have.

They can bring in 15 per class. And a total of 65 on the team which is 20 less than the D1 allotted 85.

These are serious sanctions, but the talk yesterday about them being worse than the death penalty was clearly nonsense.

And the severity will depend somewhat on what the current players do. If they lose all their current players and commits, then it becomes HUGE (and kind of a defacto death penalty). If most of those guys circle the wagons and stick with the program, it becomes serious but something they can recover from.

I'm thinking about what it would take to rebuild the football program 4 years from now and it is a huge hurdle to clear. The students who would be recruited then, juniors and seniors in high school, are in the 7th and 8th grades right now. Their awareness of PSU will drop steadily over the next four years.

Further, the tradition of PSU will not be reconnected with easily. To bring in a Paterno "disciple" would not be well received and is likely not possible. So, basically a new guy has to restart the engine. It will be at least a decade, imo.

RT @ClayTravisBGID Eddie Robinson reclaims all-time wins list, Bobby Bowden is now all-time Division 1 wins leader.

RT @ESPN_BigTen Emmert: "It’s important to separate this from a traditional enforcement case."

RT @Mengus22 So it begins. RT @GregPickel: Ohio cornerback Ross Douglas has decommitted from #PennState, per Bill Greene.

I disagree in a sense. No bowls or B1G title games for 4 years and a reduction of 20 scholarships a year will hurt them extremely. As John Infante said, it basically makes them an FCS program for four years. No one is going to want to go there. Decommitments from this year are all ready going on. Theyve lost two, and that QB will not be there much longer.
