Earnest Thomas looks good at safety with Sanni. Meanwhile, Steve Hull out with lingering shoulder from spring.

Camp Rantoul: Day 3 update

The status of Steve Hull for the opener continues to remain in question as the projected starter at strong safety recovers from shoulder surgery. "We're trying to progress him the best way possible so he can be healthy." Will he be ready for Western Michigan? "We'll see," Beckman said. "That's what this camp is all about. We'll see what he does." With Hull out, Earnest Thomas appears to be the leader at the position. "Earnest has done a great job," Beckman said. "Tommy Davis coming in, with him being a proven guy who has played college football before, has shown that he's got some capabilities."

Nice split squad feature, yet another great video as always. I really like the idea of more reps and as hull said once they go full team practices, they are in better shape and it just works out better.

By the way, did anyone see how big Houston Bates is in that video?? Looks like he put on some weight! Excited to watch him this year.

Rantoul2012 XIX: First Practice In Pads

This was the last practice for the Blue squad (first and fourth string players) before the two squads merge tomorrow. It was also the first practice in shoulder pads -- Monday and Tuesday were helmets and shorts. They're still not in full pads, as that comes on Friday. But once the shoulder pads go on, the 11 on 11 drills become real football without the tackling. And sometimes with the tackling (i.e. "sorry coach I didn't mean to but after the receiver caught the ball I couldn't get my shoulder out of the way of his midsection").

When this happens, I always watch the line play. There might not be tackling and hitting from the skill positions, but the offensive and defensive linemen get after it. It's the first chance to see how, say, a freshman offensive lineman does against Akeem Spence. Some matchups I remember:

Not an Illini, but I remember going to an Illini-Purdue game in the 80s and Rod Woodson was on the field for all except maybe 10 plays the entire game.
