"He tries to pass along the lessons. He gets in the ear of the incoming freshmen, reminding them what they should and should not do.

"No. 1 on his 'don't' list: 'Thinking you are all that.'

"'They just think it's easy,' Hawthorne said. 'I let them know how it is. You can come in with the intention of starting as a freshman. But don't come in with a big head.'"

Hard not to be a fan after reading something like this.

That was a great article. I'm really glad he stuck around and I hope he has a monster senior season.

While the Pick-6 in the KFHB was an amazing play, I will always remember Hawthorne racing down the field and tackling Roy Roundtree at the Illinois 1, the ensuing goal-line stand, and beating Michigan at home for the first time since 1983. That play was definitely a game-changer.

Hope he makes the NFL, it'd make him an even better role model for kids in East St. Louis.

He is such a positive role model, not only for the guys on our team currently, but for everyone back home in East St. Louis as well.

I am really happy to hear he is stepping up as a leader on this team.

What a great read! Terry Is an awesome kid and no matter who we get to replace him we wont be able to fill the leadership he brings.

I love this kid and agree 100%.

That display of tenacity was just awesome.

Great kid. He will succeed in whatever he does post college. A terrific role model for the youth back in ESL.

The play by Black Cat in the scUM game is one of my all time favorite. We were so leaderless that year, the year after J Leman left, that it took a frosh to step up and rally the team. That we were able to have that goal line stand was just icing on the cake, and it just totally validated the old expression of never giving up. His play saved 7 points and was the main reason we won the game.

All by an 18 year old frosh. Amazing.

Was actually 2 years after J Leman left. The crazy thing is, you had Juice as a senior and Benn as a junior, but that team was just awful... average offense and terrible defense.

We are finally getting close !
I'm just thrilled to watch something different.
Don't know if we'll be good, bad or meh.
But, I'll just bet that we won't be rudderless.
Sorry, Zooker, but that is indeed YOU that I'm looking at.

Let's get the Beck era started.
