Thus far in preseason camp, #illini mvps would be MLB Jon Brown on defense, QB Scheelhaase and OL Pocic on offense, Beckman said.

From the Beckman interview, it sounds like the specialist positions are pretty well settled.
P: DuVernois, Lankford
K: Immekus, with Zalewski the kickoff specialist and potentially the long-FG specialist

Nice to see a couple of guys step up and clearly claim the starting jobs.

Brown now trying to set good example

Before summer camp began, Illinois senior defensive end Michael Buchanan singled out Brown as one of the players who is working to become a leader.

"He's so smart he can call out what the offense is going to run before they run it," Buchanan said. "He's a very instinctive linebacker. He has been doing a great job coaching up the younger guys, teaching what he has learned since he has been in college."

Chicago Tribune: Kane

Agreed on the guys stepping up. Wondering if it stays like this if Frain keeps his schollie moving forward? Although it sounds like he had a pretty good camp both kicking and punting he just didn't step up and grab either job.

All newcomers have to wear a stripe on their helmet during training camp and have a mentor that has been on the team prior to this season. After each practice, a newcomer is "destriped" for his performance, thus becoming a full member of the Illini football team.

Newcomers have to "earn" their way fully onto the team. So they have a tape stripe on their helmets until their are "de-striped." It seems that one or two are de-striped every day.

From a fan perspective, one takeaway is that the earlier a guy is de-striped the more likely they will contribute this season.

Ohio st does this now with Urban there. It was on the ESPNU All-Access show with them. Each player has a "big brother" to mentor them as well. The big brother gets to pull the stripe off the helmet as well.

So it's a team bonding thing as well. Coach Meyer said he once had a player have his stripe on his helmet for a year and a half.

Yes. Unless we need him at some point...you never know with kickers

I agree that he most likely redshirts. We have two punters and two kickers ahead of him, so given the frequency of specialist injuries we will probably be okay without our third string guy. If it turns out we need him, then put him in the game.

Have no idea where to put this, but I was just watching the latest "All Access" with Ohio State blurb on Sportscenter which was about 5 minutes on their last scrimmage, and noticed a few things:

A) Urban Meyer is a giant butthole. He truly is an A-hole. He was just basically ripping on players during the scrimmage. I guess it is motivation, but I do not want my coach to behave that way.

B) Either Ohio State's offense is going to be terrible, or their defense is going to be really good. I would guess somewhere in the middle, with their offense being more terrible though, at least early.

An impression from the b1g preview: Braxton Miller is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
