2013 Spring Depth Chart

Interesting that at today's press conference, Beckman said Howe, Teitsma and Powell are the leaders at DT, with Cajuste playing 3-technique or strong-side DE.

A few observations from the spring notes.

Immekus, Lattimore and Afryl are not on the spring roster (FWIW, Millines is on the roster despite being suspended.) I didn't think Lattimore would be back for a 5th year, am not surprised Afryl is gone, but thought Immekus would be competing for the starting PK role.
We appear to have 68 on scholarship this spring (not including any former walkons given scholarships) and 15 players joining in the fall. So we have two extra scholarships, not including any potential openings due to guys not making the grades (e.g. Jackson.)
I guess walkons Haslett and Nudera will be competing for 3rd string QB role if they are going to redshirt Bailey. (Is Haslett on scholarship?)
We need to find a new long snapper with Pedersen gone (3 year LS.)
Of the 6 walkons who lettered in 2012, only two are still on the roster: Tim Russell (TE/holder) and Taylor Zalewski (PK). Two graduated and apparently two others quit, including a co-defensive scout team player of the year (Beau Sullivan). As has been previously noted, we haven't had much success with walkons.

QB___2 (unless Haslett is on scholarship)

TE___3
OL__17

DL___7 (we might need at least one true freshman to contribute depth)
Leo__3
LB___8
Star_2
DB__11 (one or more DBs might end up at Star)

Taking out the Leos (Bates, Caldwell and Woods), here is our DL:

DT/NG: Howe (rs-JR), Teitsma (rs-JR), Powell (FR), Bain (FR), Williams (FR)
DT/DE: Cajuste (JR)
DE: Kynard (rs-SR), Nelson (rs-SO)

We have 7 guys for three positions. Three are freshman, one is a fresh JUCO transfer. Our experienced guys were lightly recruited out of high school and lack top-end physical abilities. Let's hope Colby can turn these guys into a group of pluggers who occupy OL enough to let our LBs make plays.

Well the 3 freshmen are RS freshmen or sophs arent they? or are you calling them freshmen for spring?

So presumably Hirth is our starting long snapper. In terms of specialists, we have the following on scholarship: Zalewski (PK), Hirth (LS), Frain (PK/P), and DuVernois (P).

So that brings us to 71 scholarships with 15 signed for the fall. Given that Jackson is doubtful academically and normal attrition, we shouldn't have any trouble getting to 85 in the fall. In fact, I would guess that we have a schollie or two to spare.

They are freshmen this year, though of course they will be rs-FR or sophs in the fall. Still... very young.

Yep. Haslett was put on scholarship 2nd semester last year based on a promise from Zook which Beckman honored.

Austin Abner is not on the spring roster either. Was a preferred walk-on DB who had MAC offers out of HS. I thought he'd get a shot with our lack of depth at safety this year.

Might work out well for both sides. Haslett is a good fit for Cubit's system and gives us a needed 3rd string QB.

I have to imagine we can get 8 out of those 17. Considering there is only 2 seniors in that group, right? Lewis and Feldmeyer?

Oh...I agree with him being on scholarship. And he does fit Cubit's system. Not to mention always good to have a football coaches son at the QB spot anywhere on the depth chart. Most times those guys "get" playbooks etc better than other guys.

There is apparently a spring depth chart because Beckman referenced it in his press conference, but it isn't posted online. The official spring press release listed a roster and position but no depth chart.

This post is maybe more scheme related but it kinda has to do with our positions of strength.

I just want to say that I hope we keep the two back shotgun formation that we formations last year(and probably had the most success out of). With a tight end in the slot and two wr plus two running backs(DY5 and Ferguson) we can spread the field while putting out best players on the field and not using the 4 wide out(or 1TE 3 wide out) sets that really didn't work so well for us.

We need Young, Ferguson, and Davis on the field nearly every play.

Going back and watching WMU film with Cubit he did run plays with shotgun 2 back sets. It wasn't always 2 RB's in the backfield. There were times he had a RB and TE in the backfield. TE was used to block sometimes and run routes. In fact they scored a nice TD against CMU I think with a TE circle route out of the backfield.
