"It's a sad day," said Kyle Cassity, a member of Majerus' first recruiting class. "He did so much for St. Louis in general and did so much for me, to be honest. He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime and made me a better person. I'll be forever grateful for that. He's a hell of a coach and was a great mentor to me and a lot of other people. I hate to see him go."

"Nobody loved basketball and teaching kids more than Rick," SLU interim coach Jim Crews said. "His passion for the game and the coaching profession was unparalleled. Rick was a true friend and was always there when needed. I, along with so many others, am going to miss him."

But health always was an issue with Majerus, who missed parts of three seasons at Utah because of heart-related illnesses and had, over the years, seven heart bypasses.

We have to take care of our bodies folks. Too many great people leave this world too soon.

Sad to see the news. I enjoyed watching him coach and comment on games.

Very sad to hear this. He was a very respected coach and person. He had the St. Louis University basketball team headed back to respectability before his latest illness and was respected maybe even more as a person than as a coach.

Very sad to hear. He was well respected as a coach, and one of the funniest interviews I've ever heard. Too bad he could never get his health in line.

From USAToday. A nice, complimentary article. I've long thought that Coach Majerus was one of the class acts and genuine human beings in the collegiate coaching ranks.

Sad to hear about Rick Majerus tonight. He was an unbelievable basketball mind. Remember when he went triangle and 2 on Arizona in Tourney!

Crummy.

Coach Majerus was definitely one of the more entertaining fixtures of college basketball.

RIP. I remember last winter a couple SLU games were on and were being discussed on this forum. Multiple people commented on his appearance, noting that he did not look well.

I am not surprised, but it is sure sad to see his passing.

"I'm not a big Gay guy."

But, in all seriousness, Majerus was one of my favorite coaches and this saddens me. The college basketball world lost a good one today.

He was definitely beloved here. I was actually planning on going to the game tomorrow. I think it will be incredibly difficult for the team to play or for the fans to even be up for the game, but hopefully the Billikens can honor him with an emotional victory. He will be missed.

It's going to be an incredibly emotional sports day in the entire state of Missouri tommorrow.
