rumors are Michigan is willing to pony up 8,9, 10 million.
obviously big donors at Michigan are upset at the state of the program - so the rumor that they will pay top of the market for a new coach makes sense- but realistically who are they going to get? Cal already makes that kind of money, they aren’t getting Self or Izzo to make that switch- maybe they go after Hurley or Kelvin Sampson or another current highly successful coach and hope money will be enough for them to leave but there aren’t too many coaches that they can really attract in the upper echelon of coaches. I don’t think Brad would be on their list BTW

Even if Brad is on their list, (A) they aren’t a higher stature program than we are so they wouldn’t pull it off and (B) we’d match.

Hard to see Sampson at Michigan with their academic standards.

I wonder if John Groce has ever thought about coaching in the Missouri Valley? I think he'd actually do well and it is a step up from the MAC level of competition. He seems to have done well at Ohio U and now at Akron and if I were Southern Illinois or Indiana St, I'd probably put some feelers out to him to see if he'd be interested. I believe the jump from the MAC to Big 10 was just too much for him but a jump to the Missouri Valley would fit well for him if he wanted the challenge
Watching Akron's game the other night I was thinking the same thing. That while the Big Ten might be too high a level for him, it feels like he could do better than the MAC, and I thought about the MVC as well.

HIs on court coaching was average, recruiting was average to slightly above, but off court issues and discipline problems to me was the major problem for JG at Illinois

Could the A-10 and Dayton be an option if Anthony Grant takes a different job? Groce has a lot of Ohio roots and connections, so that seems like a logical step. Or maybe a different A-10 role?

However, if he feels like Akron is a good spot he may be good just staying there.

I don't know if he would take the job ...

This search has been weird and I haven't got much info on it ... But the one name I have heard is Kyle Smithpeters ...
That's the name that's been bandied about on the Saluki forum with some very mixed opinions: mostly negative.

Yeah, if he can keep getting in the tournament every other year he'll probably have a job for life. Something to be said for staying at a job you like over chasing more money.

That is an extreme amount of money for a coach, in fact anything over 8.5 you would be the highest paid coach in the nation. In fact Brad is the 8th highest paid coach currently in the nation and here is the breakdown for the Big 10

  • Tom Izzo, Michigan State, $5,738,727
  • Brad Underwood, Illinois, $4,600,550
  • Kevin Willard, Maryland, $3,900,000
  • Greg Gard, Wisconsin, $3,637,500
  • Juwan Howard, Michigan, $3,616,000
  • Matt Painter, Purdue, $3,580,000
  • Chris Holtmann, Ohio State, $3,500,000
  • Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska, $3,250,000
  • Fran McCaffery, Iowa, $3,208,000
  • Mike Woodson, Indiana, $3,075,000
  • Steve Pikiell, Rutgers, $3,000,000
  • Chris Collins, Northwestern, $2,893,064
  • Ben Johnson, Minnesota, $2,009,000

Brad is very well compensated at Illinois.
Wow Willard at 3.9. I bet they're thrilled with THAT investment...

I heard a rumor about SIU involving Kent Williams as head coach. Also Dana Ford, Brad Corn and Smithpeters as possible assistants.

Wait what?!?! MAC Is a waaaay better conference than the MVC. The next step would be like the A-10 or something like that. MVC would be a step down.
