You're assuming something I'm not saying. I'm merely saying the stats of the confirmed/rumored transfers are worse than TSJ's and Domasks were. I'm not saying they can't or won't improve or that the coaches are making poor decisions. Lots of our recruits have improved. TSJ and Domask improved (well, Domask didn't statistically, but that's probably due to our team defense metrics pulling his numbers down as well as higher level of competition).

I just think there's a bit of false equality between the incoming transfers and pre-Illinois TSJ/Domask based on stats. The incoming ones have further to go statistically to be at their level. And TSJ's big statistical improvement was in his second year, so it's false to imply we can count on a big jump in the first year for incoming transfers.

Well, to be fair here, the two guys we landed are said to be back-of-the-rotation guys. So of course we're not expecting Jake Davis & Tre White to be All Americans next year. Who said that? Not me.

We just came off an elite 8 game where Clingan had like 8 blocks against us. Its not always about height but how crafty you are with your shot and body.

Just heard on Werners pod that Maddox had a 6'8 wingspan or close too and Boswell is built like a truck so that should help.
Thinking mostly about Marcus here. He had several inches on the guys we are bringing in plus was outstanding with the fadeaway. Remove either the height or the shooting skillset and I foresee balls being swatted down. We'll see and hope I'm fretting about nothing.

Regurgitate all the stats you want.

My point is that this staff should have earned a lot of confidence from folks that they're currently not getting. Argue that point if you'd like, I have no interest in a statistical presentation ping-pong match here.
Hey, we're all friends here, or should be

Hey, I enjoy these discussions & arguments. I'm admittedly very optimistic too. But I have started to think I have good reason to be.

I don't think Tre White or Jake Davis are going to be TSJ/Domask, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone else we take on (or already have here), can eventually reach that level.

I had no idea Marcus's Bonneville conked out. I could have negotiated a great deal at Victory Auto Wreckers in Bensenville as his agent. (My favorite commercial of all time, all you Chicagolanders.)

Edit: Others got here first.

ppg doesn't tell much in this case. In his last two years at TT, TSJ scored about 25-29 points per 100 possessions, had a true shooting % of 56-58%, and win shares of 0.165-0.195. In his first year with us, he was at the high end of those ranges yet increased ppg by playing more minutes and taking more shots.

I'm sure it required improvement to earn more playing time and get more shots, but those pre-Illinois efficiency metrics are way above any of the rumored/confirmed transfers.

Maddox had a TS% of 64% as a junior and 59% last year. He played a lot more minutes then TSJ did, albeit at a much lower level of competition. Boswell's was 58% as a freshman.

TSJ had a 21% TO rate his last year at Texas Tech. He had a 106.8 ORating at KenPom. AJ Storr's was 106.4 last year.

Advanced stats can tell a lot of stories, but there was essentially no way to predict that TSJ would reach the level he did this past season.

I would guess he weighs a bit more than that now, but looking at images online (in ND uni, obviously, not HS pics), he is pretty slim in the torso.

For example, when compared to images of Coleman Hawkins, its very obvious how CH is listed 20 lbs heavier. Compare the guns & torso: easy to see he's not as filled out as CH, but with Fletch/Sand he'd probably get there soon-ish.

I'm ready for the phrase "with that being said" to go the way of the dodo.

I'm looking at Storr/Boswell/Maddox. By TS%, win shares/40, ORtg/DRtg, etc, they are a step down from pre-Illinois TSJ and Domask.

I'm not saying they can't/won't be good. It's just that the proposition is different. With TSJ, we were counting on him maintaining his efficiency with higher usage. With Domask, we were counting on him maintaining his efficiency with tougher competition. Neither of those things were guaranteed, and the coaches deserve credit for that.

With Storr/Boswell/Maddox, we're counting on them being much more efficient (and, in Maddox's case, even with tougher competition), and I personally think that's more risky. In Storr's case, that's with presumably less usage, and he's very highly regarded, so there's of course reason to hope.

If we don't happen to land Storr, I do expect the exact same backlash from fans a la RayJ.

Then we will get to hear about it all next year despite being ranked in the top 5-15 teams in the nation and going to the E8.
We lost out on a B10 title due to missing a veteran PG down the stretch of 4 close games. I don't know how you don't talk about that.

Book it

From after Domask committed last year.

I approve of the vote of confidence in my guy Dain, but I can't just let this "oh it's those same negative nancies who don't believe in the staff's scouting like when they all doubted Domask" thing stand.

Lol, I just found my response to the above

Domask will play more minutes than Ty or Dain, book it.

I know we are long past the lie of the student-athlete, as we should be, but man, a lotta kids are going to be left with 4 years of school from 3 to 4 colleges and a mass of credits, but no real way to translate that into any sort of diploma. Kinda of a shame.
so true

but is that any worse fate than all the "regular" students paying $140,000 or more for a diploma in some of these disciplines where the prospects of getting any kind of job using that degree are about 1 in 100 ?

traditional colleges and universities need to radically reconsider what they are trying to "sell" to all the students who are not in STEM .
Its a discussion for another day

You are really grasping at straws here. Ayo outperformed expectations. Kofi outperformed expectations. TSJ outperformed expectations. Domask outperformed expectations. Hawkins outperformed expectations. I'm sure there are more but that, though by itself, is outstanding track record for a period of 4-5 years.
So your saying that as a fan base we have low expectations?

What's there to talk about? I'm not gonna begin to unpack that one, other than we can agree to disagree that replacing Domask with a guy who turned the ball over 60% more times this season gives us 4 more wins.

Say we do pick up Boswell. How does that make fears feel? I’m sure he was promised a starting point guard position his freshman year.
I HIGHLY doubt that Brad would guarantee a starting spot for a Freshman. That would go against everything that he believes in with regards to wanting to be "old" and having guys earn their stripes.
