I don't understand this value based comments. With no salary cap, value means nothing. It really comes down to how much money you can get. Which I personally think is a ridiculous way to run any sport, but that's a different topic.
But I keep coming back to what you do to the defense. 5 good players, make a great team. No weakness, and you can exploit weakness on the other team. 3 good players, 1 average player, and 1 great player will be a better team. Because that one great guy occupies the defense and allows the good guys to get clean looks and be even better.
We need a Batman. The Ayo, Kofi, Shannon guy that makes defenses gameplan for them. That causes defenders to say I can't leave this guy to help. A perfect example of this was Purdue. If they had Isaac Haas instead of Edey, that's not a great team. But Edey elevated their team far beyond what he alone brought to the table.
Not making any comment specifically about this kid, just in general. If we want another deep tournament run, I think we have to have an Alpha. Reality is, all of our best seasons have had an All American on the team. So at some point we're going to have to break the bank and bring in a stud.
