I mean it kinda doesn't.

Anderson and Frankie didn't play as freshmen, Ayo was a frosh on the losingest team in program history, and Belo was a lot of fun in a very limited role.

Dee and Kofi are the only guys there who really drove success as freshmen, and as we've mentioned with super seniors still hanging around and the portal making good teams older and deeper, it's a uniquely challenging time for freshmen.

Morez has the opportunity to help us next year, but expecting him to be Batman is a bad idea. Luckily our staff is not expecting that and is out there seeking our big scoring star right now.
Deron Williams did as well, unless you only think points drives results.

I certainly, as a fan, do not want DGL to transfer, but wouldn’t him transferring to a smaller school, where he could star, be beneficial to him?!
If he went to on to start and star at a smaller place and averaged 17, 4, and 4, wouldn’t he have a huge market coming into his junior year?

What if he stayed “committed” to us and did this?!
I'd prefer he just stay here and battle for PT. I think he has enough juice to earn a significant role this year. That kid has a lot of talent and drive, and he seems to love being an Illini. He's not afraid to be coached hard and doesn't shy away from the work. He will be a high level B1G player sooner than later.

Long distance relationships are very hard to maintain. People don't tend to "stay committed", even with the best of intentions.

Committing to this bit requires me to read every post and then capture the mood of the board. Needless to say, I will NOT be doing something similar in the game threads. 😂
Pretty sure for a game thread, all you need to do is create a single template and it would be good for all games. The mood seems to be the same win or loss...and not in a good way.

I don't have any knowledge of roster make up moving forward. Observing other teams like Kansas and others re load with a vengeance makes me pretty nervous. I quite frankly like the players we've added and wish we could have kept: dainja, Amani, Goode, and Buck! Retaining those character Illini men added with our new additions would have made for a good team! IMO

The only way he's playing at Iowa is if he isn't as good as Poopy McGee.
Maybe maybe not, but either way that's not the point.

Our top rated recruit in 2020 was Adam Miller, in 2021 it was Brandin Podziemski, in 2022 it was Skyy Clark and in 2023 it was Amani Hansberry.

David Jones is way better than Hansberry, at least he projects to be next year by any reasonable analysis, but I have cared about and been interested in Hansberry and his game and future for like three years, and had been excited for him to step forward into a larger role. I want to win, of course, above all else, but David Jones means nothing to me and he never can in the way an Ayo or Brandon Paul or Mike Tisdale or Roger Powell or whoever does.

College basketball is killing itself if it chucks that out the window.

And for the record, Kiwane Garris was ---- along with Deon ---- also one of our biggest impact true Freshman (of all time?). 16 ppg, primary ball handler, leader in FT's attempted and FT's made, and on-the-court team leader. Shot 47%/33%/80% in his first year.

Calm, collected and mature beyond his years as a true Freshman.

Morez could be more in the vein of Deon Thomas' freshman year of 1990/91. Kaufman was "the man" 21.3 ppg but Deon was #2 at 15.1 ppg and leading rebounder at 6.8. Team was picked very low but finished 3rd in Big Ten (21-10 record).
That team would have certainly been an NCAA tournament team if not for the probation. Kiwane Garris was pretty impactful as well.

*Deon beat me to it.

Was Deron pictured? Kiwane?

I guess it depends on what impact means. If it means "drove winning;" then Derek Harper, Bruce Douglas, Efrem Winters, and Deron Williams would qualify.

If the standard is a difference maker on a competitive team; then Kiwane Garris and possibly the late Mark Smith from Peoria.

There have been a number of guys like Altenberger, Bardo and Keene who contributed as solid rotation players as true freshmen.

I do agree it is a different time for freshmen.
