The NCAA chose not to fight after one federal judge in WV granted a TRO on Antitrust grounds. They passed a rule approving unlimited transfers transfers as long as they are not mid-season and bogus academic progress requirements are met. What's to stop mid-year transfers? That decision was for its own financial benefit. Its their money grab until they are forced to go away entirely.
Random thoughts on solutions:
1) players union, seems unlikely a bunch of spoiled teenagers who look only 1-4 years out will make this happen. It isn’t at all clear who that Union would negotiate with unless the NCAA allowed for direct payments from schools. Individual NIL providers are exempt from salary caps even in pro sports.
2) congress grants the NCAA an antitrust exemption like Major League Baseball. This seems unlikely though as no one trusts the NCAA enough to grant them any extraordinary rights.
3) congress grants some new organization an antitrust exemption with enough caveats to protect players from the real abuses they suffered under the NCAA. Maybe the University Chancellors from the Power 5 get together. But given the existing PR problems higher education currently faces, I expect colleges football and basketball would have to completely implode for this to happen.
4) seems unlikely we would ever get to the point where a billionaire or corporation is prevented from entering an agreement with another individual. So 1-3 might apply only to average D1 players for a base salary. The superstars still being able to advertise for State Farm or Nike.
In other words, get used to the chaos…
Raising questions about how things are going or asking for a reasonable time-line is not freaking out. I am actually surprised that there haven't been more posts that I would categorize as actually freaking out or a super hot take.

Portal window closing, a lot of names we bandied about have gone elsewhere. It's starting to feel like we are going to replace a bunch of guys who didn't see much PT with players of similar caliber.

There is an important factor missing from your statement, but i don't mean to pick on you Emerson, as i would say it is missing, again, from most discussion of this subject.
If one could say the NCAA "created this mess by choosing to ignore the eventuality of player compensation," then one can still say it, because players are not being compensated. They are being paid, yes, but they are not being paid by the entity that profits off of their labor, the NCAA. Instead the situation is closer to that of a glorified waitstaff being tipped (ever more incredible sums) by donors because the employer doesn't pay them at all. The NCAA is running a fantastic con. It won't last forever, but it is glorious.
The NCAA absolutely did nail it - in the short term. The players aren't complaining about not getting paid, and the NCAA didn't have to pay them.

I'm trying to catch up, but, if someone hasn't beaten me to it, I have to ask "Is sixth out of 18 so bad? Seems as good as top 4 out of 10 or 12 or almost with 14, which was always kind of the standard as to what a good season was.
