Reasons for CH to come back
1) He would get 7 figures in NIL money - much more than a 2 way contract if he even gets drafted and makes a team
2) He won't have to play the 5 and show some additional skills to improve his draft stock (TSJ improved his significantly)
3) He's not 100% healthy so he won't show his best this draft cycle - he can get healthier this offseason after surgery and be better prepared next year
4) College experience - chance for a Big Ten title, final four, etc.

Reasons to go through the draft
1) Weak draft class so he may not have a better chance, even though he won't be 100% healthy

I think he can bet on himself and even if next years class is better, he'll be a lot better too - he'll be one of the best players in the big ten and one of our top scoring options - he could really set himself up nicely if he can get healthy
3a) Fletch
5) OA

The issue for CH right now is that he's not getting any younger, which hurts him. Coming back really is unlikely to improve his stock much. In addition, this is a historically weak draft.

On the other hand, can you really pass on a guaranteed $1MM like he'd probably get returning to school? Such a tough decision.
However, its a huge advantage for basketball prospects that do get younger.

Now up to 10 on the roster. 3 open scholarships and id have to imagine that means 2 more players incoming(one might be a developmental/bench type player).

Lotta nice players and good depth at the moment but really need to get a top tier guy at the 2/3 to tie the roster together(even if Coleman were somehow to return though don't see that happening).

What's his college eligibility like? Is he expected to be a multi-year guy or just 1?

I assume they still want a wing/primary scoring threat and maybe a backup ball handler?

CH has indicated that he would not return without first consulting with the players who have been brought in under the assumption he would no longer be there.

Hypothetically, say he favors a return, his sell would be something like:

>I will relegate one of you to coming off the bench and take a share of minutes from each of you, but…

>It will take nothing away from your current NIL deal, I am an unselfish & supportive teammate, can teach you Brad’s system like no other, and most importantly - we will collectively have a more successful season (think B1G championship, F4 level) with my contributions.

So…

If you’re one of Tre White, Carey Booth, or Ben ShakeRattle&Hum (or Ty Rodgers, for that matter), what would you say❓

Last offseason I was pretty confident we'd get Coleman and TJ back. Even with the long process, that never really wavered.

This offseason I have been pretty confident that we'd seen the last of Coleman. Until today. I have a very good feeing that he will return. Get a BIG BAG ready.

Incidentally, Ivisic and Danny Wolf were both prominently featured for their countries (Wolf played for Israel) at the Euro U20 championship last summer.

Wolf made the team of the tournament in an underdog run to the final, whereas Ivisic was just okay, averaging 10 and 6 for a disappointing Croatia team.

But then it's hard to overemphasize the difference in competition level between Wolf returning to the Ivy League and Ivisic returning to playing against very talented grown men in the senior Adriatic League.

Carey Booth is the one I feel would be the most put off by Coleman’s return. He came here specifically so he wouldn’t have to play the five. But with Coleman and Big Ben playing the 3-4 positions and Tre White a solid 3, Booth likely backs up Ivisic at the 5.

Now that we have TI, even if we don't get Demin I still think we can be a Top 3 in the Big 18 team if we can snag one of the top SG's remaining. Either Richmond or Wooga would fit the bill nicely. That is one hell of a roster on paper, and with OA on board now adding to our excellent developmental staff, as long as these guys can gel over the coarse of the season I'd love our chances come tourney time. Almost feels Gonzaga-like to me (especially if we DO get Demin).

THIS. I wouldn't be surprised if Underwood is as frustrated with the changes to college hoops since he started his career as any other coach ... but it's clear he isn't going to cry over spilled milk, and he is adjusting and thriving to this new reality, whether he thinks it's "good for the sport" or not.

Brad seems to understand that in a "best case" offseason like last year, you will return a very solid core (TSJ, Coleman, Ty, Goode, etc.) but will need to significantly supplement it with some real talent (Domask, Quincy, Harmon, etc.) to have a truly great team. In a "worst case" offseason, you will need to pretty much remake your entire roster from scratch and will be lucky to return 1-2 guys (Ty, DLG). And he seems to also understand that he will be still be expected to win big at a job like Illinois ... I think the man is up to the task, and I question how many coaches in this current landscape are.

This 100%. If there is one word to describe Brad it's "Adaptable". He's easily the most adaptable coach we've had in my lifetime, and that's a huge part of why he's been so successful. Offensive strategy isn't working? Change it. Defensive strategy isn't working? Change it. Assistant coach isn't working? Change it. Players aren't working? Change it.
