Illinois 63, Purdue 37 POSTGAME

I didn't look how many minutes DaMonte had last night. I am a huge DaMonte fan - Peoria people represent! But man does the offense flow so much better with him on the bench 🤷‍♂️

Man, for Nojel Eastern being named to the All B1G pre season team, his game has slid tremendously. He has not made a 3 pointer all year and is 5 for 17 on FT's. He is surviving on his defense I guess.

18 minutes, way too many. Williams has now scored a total of 3 points in his last 87 minutes of B1G play.

It's not that we held serve on our home court.....it's the way we did it. If they take that kind of intensity on the road they are going to snag a couple.

It is kind of funny how a win heals most wounds for most fans — me included. Fun game to watch and Illini looked very good, but box score does show show some problems. Trent looked great and much more like his old self, but he only shot 5 of 12 with one assist. Ayo hit on only 3 of 11 shots though he did have 7 rebounds. In fact outside of AG, the team only shot 41 percent.
Illini play like they did last night, they have a chance against WI, but the Badgers are on a 4 game and haven”t lost at home. Hoping for a win, but not going to be posting in coaching carousel thread if doesn’t happen.
Funny that 3 of 11 is still a better percentage than what Purdue did as a team.

What I noticed about DW is he seems afraid to shoot the ball when he is open. I would like to see him drive and dish, or take a pull up jumper. Wasn't he deadly in HS before the knee injury? If he can snap out of his shooting slump that will really help.

I don’t get why he is such a poor shooter. His form is excellent.

I actually really enjoyed Time Miles :unsure:

Offensively, the thing that caught my eye was Kofi having some good passes back out of the post. In past games it seems like he feels like he has to go up with the ball when he gets it pretty much every time. Last night he had some real good kick backs (Trent for 3 on one of them).

Griffin for president. I just realized, he hasn't had many bad games or has he? I just don't remember a game where after I was like, oh man he missed a bunch of layups or caused a bunch of turnovers or missed a bunch of easy shots....or am I just in the Griffin coolaid?

Painter is engaging and insightful and conducts himself with integrity, particularly after a bad loss.
Seems like a pretty likable guy.
One of the best pressors I've ever seen. Articulate and insightful. Really interesting to see him acknowledge a lot of things we already know --guys playing to the score, hunger, development arc, etc., while fitting those into more technical basketball insights. Total class throughout --conducts himself like a guy who's very secure in his ability, which you don't often see when a coach is on the wrong end of a blow-out. Seems to understand it's a long season, and you can't lose perspective on what is at times a long grind.

On the flip side, we have every reason to celebrate. Guys put together a special game. But looking ahead, we haven't handled success well, and I fear for the next outing.

Please let these guys learn that you gotta bring that passion out when you get the opportunity to play! Could still be a very fun season!

LOVED the win last night just as much as anyone, no doubt about it. I see someone pointing out that Ayo shot 3-11, obviously not impressive but it happens. Makes me think of what someone said in another spread about how Ayo plays great against lesser opponents, but doesn't get it done against Power 5 or equivalent. Also DW didn't even attempt a shot. We continue this, we're basically playing 5 on 4 on the offensive end and opponents are going to treat us that way. Don't wanna bring negativity to a win, especially a B10 win, just something I saw was all.
To the point of Ayo not bringing it in the B10 and high major competition: This is just inaccurate. Look at Ayo’s stats from last year in the BIG. His conference play last year is what made some folks think he would enter the draft. Also, he has brought it in conference play this year. He just didn’t have a great shooting performance last night.

I just have no idea where folks are getting Ayo doesn’t “bring it” to B10 play...

I'm not sure that it was us playing great as it was us playing better and Purdue not being able to throw the ball in the ocean. Let's see how we play at Wisconsin. If we repeat the same type of play against them, then maybe we are getting on the right track.

When looking at Ayo's shooting stats we also need to take into consideration that he's often the one given the ball with just a few seconds left on the shot clock.Shooting percentage is bound to drop when you're forced to shoot.

To my eye, it looked like a replay of the MSU game, but this time with Purdue--not us--playing the role of the skittish road team.

I don't think our defense is as quite as good as the score last night indicates, and hope that we aren't as skittish on the road when we go up to Madison.

I wasn't necessarily saying Ayo doesn't bring it in the bigger games, because I hadn't done any homework on the stats. I was just pointing out last nights performance and comparing it to what someone else had said in another thread was all. As my comment says, games like that are going to happen, it's basketball. I just like to point things out that I notice to see others views on them. If you do look at that stats this year, last year is last year to me, hes averaging almost 7 ppg more when facing a non-high major opponent.
I don’t know where you got your number from. Against Arizona, Miami, Mizzou, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue (the high-majors) he averaged About 14.6 ppg. Against the rest (low-majors) he averaged about 16.5 ppg. That is about 2 ppg, not 7. And if that is still a big difference to some folks, I think that is nit-picking.

He led the team with 7 rebounds and had two assists. Does that count?

Agreed. A look at the stat line shows that, although Ayo wasn't hitting a lot of his shots, he made up for it in other ways with 7 rebounds, a blocked shot and a couple assists. A lack of scoring doesn't bother me when others are there to pick up the slack and the player is making major contributions in other ways.

AG deserves all the accolades he’s getting, but imo Trent isn’t getting enough credit. He set the tempo, was aggressive and kept it up the entire game. All while shutting down their best shooter and playing 32 minutes. That’s impressive. I hope to see more of him at PG in the coming games.
