Jereme Richmond named Sun-Times' Player of the Year

Waukegan star Jereme Richmond became only the second junior to be voted the Sun-Times' Player of the Year in the 49-year history of the award.

Jereme Richmond has convinced nearly everyone that he is one of the elite players in state basketball history. Now the 6-7 junior from Waukegan must take his act to a bigger stage and convince critics that he is the No. 1 player in the nation.

Being named the Sun-Times' Player of the Year is a noteworthy achievement. Being named one of Illinois' all-time best, in a class with Isiah Thomas, Cazzie Russell, Quinn Buckner, Mark Aguirre, Doc Rivers and Derrick Rose, would be another. And being ranked among the top five players in the nation would be quite another.

''He had a good summer last year but not a dominant one,'' said Van Coleman of Hoopmasters.com, who ranks Richmond as the No. 8 player in the Class of 2010. ''So this spring and summer will be important to re-establishing him as a contender for a top-five spot.''
