December football could make for better Januarys in Big Ten

Some feel the Big Ten is at a competitive disadvantage in bowl games because it's coming off a longer layoff than teams in the SEC and Big 12. In general, those conferences finish their regular season one week later followed by league championship games the first Saturday in December.

To ease the physical toll of a 12-game regular season and combat potential bowl rustiness, Illinois will have a bye week before playing Ohio State on Sept. 26 and another week off after its Big Ten finale before playing Cincinnati on Nov. 27 and Fresno State on Dec. 5. Wisconsin will take two weeks off after it concludes Big Ten play before traveling to Hawaii for a Dec. 5 encounter.
