Waiting for Cali to tell me this guy plays with a mean streak or is nasty. Need some attitude on our D.

Is it just me or has recruiting gone downhill from last year. I am starting to get worried that we continue to get low three and two star players at this point. I get that we are not Alabama here but there seemed like some real momentum was being built with last years class and nothing seems to have come of it. I am not averse to a few MAC level guys to fill out depth but when it seems to be every recruit we have been getting except for the RB I think it's time to evaluate whether or not these players will actually move us forward or simply keep us in a .500 or below bigten team.

Recruiting was really good at the very end, which kind of inflated the class's perception. Having Brown and Megginson early helped, but they're in a similar place this year at this time as they were last year.

I would love to get players that can get us to .500 in the Big Ten, that would be a huge step forward for this program.

500 in the big 10
Would get us to 7-8 wins a year in regular season do
That for 4 years in a row and win a
Couple bowl games and the recruits will
Come particularly if we can beat NW and Iowa consistently

I was referring to .500 overall as in 6-6 I am not even close to the expectations that we will be .500 in bigten play.

Well we were only one game away from .500 in the Big Ten last year so I don't think it is that much of a stretch.

Antonio Shelton Oh 6'3 275 3tech/Sde
It becomes clear very quickly that this an athletic guy for his size ,also at the same time he has to get with the S+C coaches. He needs heck of a lot of work on technique he comes up immediately leaving him more blockable so his get off while vvg quick is often defeated. Not nasty or mean put that might come when he knows more of what to do. Needs to put the peddle to metal more and just floor it be more aggressive. qat the snap. Ability wise he has vvg sp, qui, burst and in pursuit from behind etc. VVg-vg st, and power. and that can be changed. He has the makings of he fine pass rusher who can defend the run but my guess is that is not before his rs soph year. He could see the field quicker by staying at 275 and developing his strength for sde, you can slap 25 lbs on him easy and get a 3tech a year later. If he lives in the gym maybe sooner.:):chief:

Let me add one more note here Shelton and Black our projected 3Technique and Sde d-lineman can both run. And are more unprepared as to restricted in what the might finally be capable of accomplishing. Simms at RT or g could have the later said of him as well. It all going to be up to what these kids are willing to do and what the coaches are capable of passing on to them.
Sorry the grade for Shelton was a 3* 5.55 so a very low 3 star.

I think it's realistic for the Illini to focus on potential upside players that might initially grade out lower. This seems to be a recruiting arena that we need to be in and hopefully can excel at. As always, thank you for your efforts on our behalf, Calibear, and here's hoping our rough diamonds take to polishing.

we can get by a couple years getting guys that were overlooked or focusing on smart, team type guys who aren't off the charts with the measurables.

but we need to start landing some of those 4* star guys soon. you cant keep hoping that 1/2 or 60% of these guys that were under the radar in high school are going to be starters on a winning B1G team by the time they are Jrs.

sooner, rather than later, our recruits need to look good the first day of college as well as 2-3 years later

If Beckman keeps the attrition rate low, we can have a chance going this route. Everyone but Turner and Dudek Redshirted last year. Everyone but Vaughn, Megginson, and maybe Mays will redshirt this year. Slowly they are building depth and experienced depth. They are going to take 6 o line and 5 dline and try to redshirt almost all of them. If they identify the right players it could work

Very similar to how Minnesota under Kill got where they are today.

This this this.

very tough to win a B1G division or even be 6-3, 7-2 in the league that way. We really need some guys who are going to turn into all B1G type players their Jr & Sr years.

The Big West is weak. Illinois just needs 3 straight bowls with similar attrition rates. Then we can begin pushing for better recruits

The longest journey... Rome wasn't built... One step at... Make this day a good... Keep your eye on... Build on your successes. You get the idea

We may have finally turned the corner, as far as recruiting to build a program. We've been forced to recruit Juco's using 1/3 of the class on them simply to fill out our 2-deep. Ideally we only want to identify key contributors like Jihad & Geronimo through the Juco's. To build a stable program, we have to consistently bring in a mid-level Big10 freshmen class

Im patient. No one really need to preach this wait and see stuff to me, but the average fan isn't, and its year 4. If we don't win 6 games and go to a bowl, its going to get tougher when we start playing 9 B1G games
