Best news of this whole charade so far!

Did they intend or luck into this situation? Hire the AD before the next BoT meeting and tear up that contract. This is a P5 job, the new AD just might have a candidate in his back pocket... maybe? This 2016 class is lost anyway, so I would undersign it and carry over the rides to 2017 early enrollees (count them towards 2016), get that 2017 class rolling immediately with a new coaching hire with a 5 year deal.

So many moving parts if this is even possible. :peace:

Boers mentioned on B&B earlier today that he's been told Cubit hasn't signed his 2 yr deal yet. Said he's unhappy with the structure (basically not happy with how they had the 2nd year structured).
In real terms it's structured so he won't have a second year. Otherwise there would be a third and fourth in there too. But that's probably what he doesn't like, a buyout that's basically cab fare to the airport. FWIW, Wilson said that they hadn't worked out that part of the deal when they agreed to a contract in principle. This is not to be confused with not having a plan, of course.

Good, I hope he's unhappy with it. He brought this stupid :censored: contract on himself, so he better freaking take it after campaigning for it all freaking season. I hate Bill.

This! He would not have a HC job at any Power5 job if not for our mess of an administration. Shut up, get this team through next year, cash your paycheck, and enjoy your retirement. I hope the buyout for that second year covers no more than his moving costs.

Harsh! You may not like the guy but he really shouldn't be the recipient of all the anger. You can't blame a guy for lobbying for a seven figure job. How many people on here would not do the same? I'm sure that while he was lobbying, he was not imagining a two year contract. While that might be the dumbest thing the administration has done, it is on them, not Cubit.

Even if he did come up with the 2 year idea... it's ultimately on the administration for going with it. The anger at Cubit is misplaced, IMO.

If your campaign is based upon wanting to help Illinois and the players, you shouldn't doom them with your dumb idea of a 2-year contract, which any coach in the country realizes is totally counterproductive.

So, realistically, he's realized his offenses have been too bad to get another job after Illinois, so he took advantage of a bunch of idiots and is trying to collect more money before disappearing into the night and retiring from the profession in a year, cackling at the fact that he managed to milk us for $1.2 million + (as he hopes, decent buyout money) after doing a :censored: job as OC making 300k or whatever is was. The sad part is, he managed to do all this and will have a very nice house in Florida in 2017.

I have plenty of anger inside that allows me to distribute it fairly at both our administration AND Cubit, and they both deserve their fair share.

I do not fault Cubit for lobbying for the job and corresponding paycheck. What angers me is that he, if the report is to be believed, is complaining about the structure of the contract. Cubit had zero leverage for this job so likely had to accept the position before the contract details were finalized. That is a risk he chose to take and now must deal with the consequences. I do not feel bad for him at all. Don't want to be treated like a stopgap coach? Don't accept a position that you know will not last more than a year.

That's because the contract they gave him to sign was a partial guaranteed 1 year deal with a non-guaranteed 2nd year. Cubit and his agent caught it and the UI people played dumb so a whole new draft is being put together. That's not what they verbally agreed to (guaranteed 2 year contract).

So, Boers is correct in his little tidbit.

Kind of funny, Cubit was on Saturday Sports Line this past weekend and he said he hadn't signed the contract yet.

I would assume Kowalczyk is leading the discussion? Maybe trying to blow it all up so he can make a new hire!

I very sincerely hope this isn't true. These people represent the institution that gave me my law degree. They already sullied that diploma enough with the ABA reporting scandal from a few years back. Now you're suggesting we tried some bait n' switch tactic with our revenue sport coach beneath what even a sleazy used car huckster might pull. Please make it stop.

Kowalczyk is the one who delivered it to be signed. He the blamed the lawyers who wrote the contract up once the issues were brought up by Cubit.

Past that I'm not sure who knew what or if it was intentional?

I'm not sure it looks any better for these people if it was a mistake. Does anyone have any clue what anyone else is doing over there? Do they communicate at all? How does the message get so garbled? I mean, we're either writing up contracts without knowing what terms have already been agreed to, or we're handing over contracts to sign without knowing what's in them, or both. This is basic stuff, and it borders on professional malpractice to get it wrong. In a contract dispute, the courts would hold a guy who sublet a basement apartment to his second cousin to a higher standard than this.

Moreover, the terms of the second year buyout is the only thing that really matters in the whole contract. That's what gives the new AD the window to painlessly change course following the 2016 season, which was ostensibly the only reason we embarked on this whole fiasco. If two years of guaranteed money is what we verbally agreed to, we might as well have written the whole thing up on the back of a cocktail napkin. The crux would be Cubit gets all his contract money no matter what. So what would there be to really argue about. How is that not the one thing about which everybody involved isn't 100% all on the same page?

Dear lord.

The 2 year deal has officially marked Cubit as a 1 year stopgap. Why bother giving him any type of buyout for that 2nd year? No amount of buyout $ is going to convince anyone Cubit will last past 2016.

Cubit had no leverage whatsoever as of late November.

He has gained some leverage now, just based on what a shamockery it would be to walk away from him after all this, STILL without an AD in place.

I understand the optics of this deal falling through but it would ultimately be Cubit walking away.
