Cubit had no leverage whatsoever as of late November.

He has gained some leverage now, just based on what a shamockery it would be to walk away from him after all this, STILL without an AD in place.
Well, in her statements to the N-G immediately after the Cubit deal was announced, Wilson specifically said that the parties had not worked out the details with respect to the second year, i.e., whether it was guaranteed money or a buyout or whatever. I thought that was an odd thing to say at that time because that seemed like the one issue that they all needed to be clear on, since it was presumed on both sides Cubit was more likely than not to only be the coach for one year. So Wilson was either lying about that matter to the N-G, there was some kind of miscommunication where Cubit got the wrong impression that his money was guaranteed, or Cubit is taking advantage of the administration's failure to set down clear terms in their discussions to leverage his way into guaranteed money now.

But does it matter? In all the three scenarios, the implication is the same: incompetence, lackadaisicalness, disorganization. Laypersons put more thought and care into hiring a carpenter to replace their kitchen cabinets than we put into locking down our football coach for next season.

I very sincerely hope this isn't true. These people represent the institution that gave me my law degree. They already sullied that diploma enough with the ABA reporting scandal from a few years back. Now you're suggesting we tried some bait n' switch tactic with our revenue sport coach beneath what even a sleazy used car huckster might pull. Please make it stop.

It's par for the course for our beloved. Does everyone remember how they screwed over Zook's assistants at the end? Illinois up to their old tricks again

I understand the optics of this deal falling through but it would ultimately be Cubit walking away.

First of all, if Cubit walked away, he'd walk away from over a million dollars and the best job he could get would maybe be making $200,000 somewhere. Maybe.

Second, if he walked away we could still find a coach with more potential upside easily - it would have to be an NFL guy or an assistant ready to jump but there are plenty of guys with potential just waiting for a chance.

I can honestly say that this one shocks me. I know he has been the whipping boy for the last few years, but I thought that his defense was the bright spot.

So the thought would be there's a replacement for Banks. I would think they would have someone lined up before they fired Banks. Maybe Koenning changed his mind.

Wow, Tim Banks fired. It's a great disturbance in the force, as though the anguished cries of a million game thread posts were finally heard, then silenced.

AJ Ricker --- didn't we just have an OL recruit switch to Mizzou from us... talk about strange... commit to Illinois... change made to play for Mizzou and their Oline coach... their Oline coach leaves to come to Illinois... my head hurts....

me too, but I wonder how much impact Phair had with the experienced DL, along with helping Banks. The big question is, did this defense take a step forward because of Banks, Phair, or a combination of the 2?

Hope the Banks thing is indeed BS.

Heclinski seems like a surprisingly good hire, played at U of I one season according to wikipedia.
