Not if he plays again.

Considering that Thorne said he expects to be back tonight (I think it was over Instagram?), I'd say this is the likely scenario. To me that means either the staff isn't confident in getting a 6th year or else Thorne isn't interested.

Or maybe he's finally healthy and is able to play.

I may be off base here, but if a player is healthy and a team holds him out in hopes of getting a medical redshirt, I would think the NCAA would not allow it.

You would need paperwork from doctors indicating that the injury is season ending, but it's not as black and white as some people believe. As with any injury, he's going to fight some soreness (with some possible swelling) on his return, but at what point is it too much for the player to feel comfortable returning to action? That's a team decision that is pretty subjective based on what the player's indicating. It's not like there's test that they can run to determine if it's season ending or not.

Yes, like Black appearing to be ready to come back, only to show on the floor that he really wasn't. That said, I hope Thorne returns and returns soon. I'm not much of a "wait til next year" guy. Let's show something and recruit better because of it.

Groce said this the other day. Something along the lines of "It is our job to try and get our player's ready to play."

Assuming that he had a choice between playing again this year for part of a season while not at 100% (as is the alleged case due to conditioning) or continuing to recover and trying to gain a 6th year, this represents him choosing the former, therefore not being interested in the redshirt. Either that, or them not being confident that a redshirt would be approved so they are doing their best to bring him back now.

Maybe I would have been better of phrasing it as "he would choose trying to come back now for a partial year over trying to get approved for a full 6th year" to make my point more clear.

Exactly, plus a few more wins potentially from having him available could be huge for Groce's future

It's too bad Williams and Goodwin want to wait and see what happens to Groce. I'm guessing that means they won't decide until at least the end of the season. Unfortunately, it doesn't make much sense to me because part of whether Groce sticks around or not is dependent upon his recruiting of the 2017 class. Plus, even if they did commit and he was fired, they would have ample time to reopen their recruitment and go somewhere else. Groce would be fired before they needed to sign their NLOT.

Even if they were to wait until after bball season and when the new AD is hired that would still be a pretty early commitment. A lot of recruits for '17 wouldn't commit until Aug-Oct. From their standpoint I doubt they would wait until following next season (ie spring commits) because 1. their recruitments would be hectic and anyone in their right mind would just be sick of it by then 2. it doesn't really change much

If Groce and get commits from Goodwin and Williams at this juncture then he's a better recruiter than I thought.

Get those 2 guys, show some life at the end of the season and sell like crazy to Tillmon and a PG.

This is my thought process, but I am not a 17 year old basketball stud. If Groce was gone at the end of April (not my expectation, nor hope), they would have time to start shopping again. Also, they may really like the new hire.

If Groce gets Goodwin and Williams it explains to people that recruiting central and southern Illinois kids, while not a given, is a lot easier than recruiting Chicago area kids.

Tillmon, Goodwin and Williams are all being sold like crazy. So was Pickett.

It's not hard to understand what is going on. And you can believe the staff is riding that horse as hard and as fast as it will go. :thumb:

Will it work? who knows. It worked for one already. Friendship used to go a long way. Here's hoping it still does.

Otherwise, we will have another dead horse to beat!

There are fewer "street agent" types in central and southern IL. Makes for a more straightforward recruitment a lot of the time.

Wouldn't Williams be your PG or is he considered more of a combo?

Depends who you ask. Right now probably more of a combo.

and with TJL being a pure point and one year ahead of Damonte, a combo is a great spot to be.

People don't like to hear it, but Dee Brown was a combo guard. In college, so was Dwill. Together they could both play the point and both play the 2.

Contrary to popular belief on forums, I like combo guards. It is not a bad word. Especially if you have a pure point on the team with them.

Deron Williams was a pure point. Dee never averaged less than 4.5 assists per game. Dee was a combo, because Deron played the point.

I do agree that Damonte being a "combo" isn't a bad thing with TJL being our future point.

It's going to take a miracle to land any of the recruits from the class of 2017. I'm wondering if Pickett is regretting his decision after watching that debacle. As much as I like Groce, I just can't see how he will dig out of this hole.
