I have not been keeping up on this thread lately, but is the former Tennis Coach a real possibility? And how many candidates are left. Were not the Powers That Be supposed to have an AD in place by today?

Tiley is a possibility, sure. I think it's unlikely to happen, because it would make sense. As far as how many candidates are left, we're down to a handful of names on this board, but who knows what the candidates are on this board. The candidates you see discussed here the most are Craig Tiley, Rick George, Sean Frazier, Tom Michael. I placed those in order of most awesome to least awesome, in my uneducated opinion on the matter.

As far as a deadline, we did hear "by the end of January" at one point, but I remember it being a vague proclamation, not really a deadline. A week ago or so, I saw a tweet saying that we were narrowing down the field (I would freakin' hope so), but that a decision could be made by the end of this week (i.e. Feb 5th or 6th, something like that). Who knows if that'll happen though.

Edit: Forgot one name. Josh Whitman is also talked about. Truth is, there could be other names out there that we haven't seen on this board.

Illinois NEEDS to make it happen with Craig Tiley as AD. Give him a voice in finding the new chancellor, money, women, whatever it takes. Just do a twitter search and see how much regard people in the tennis world have for him. The man just knows how to put a successful plan together and execute it.

If the guy can make good hires then get it done.

Talking with the guys at work late last week regarding Illinois football, basketball, and the A.D. search. Wow, couldn't believe how negative and emotional the conversation got, and in a hurry, too!

A name for the A.D. position was brought up...Jim Tressel. I know he's been brought up before, but when brought in our group everyone had the same reaction...awesome! Instant buzz, huge network in the football community, would be a great fundraiser, etc. We thought the good much outweighed the bad. He is the president at Youngstown St., making about $300,000? Crap, make him A.D. and co-president. Pay the man and get him here. Okay, fire away, we have broad shoulders!

Ha! I had a similar conversation this weekend and his name came up. Got the obvious jokes about the scandal but overall I like the thought. I would be pumped if Tressel came aboard.

Love the idea , instant impact and credibility brought to athletic programs, I myself don't care about the past he did his time no move on . Only would help his resume he would get this thing turned around. He would probably bring pelini with him.:chief:

Couple of thoughts: If we can't get an experienced AD (George or someone else who's done it at a high level) and we're going to take a chance on someone, I'd take a chance on Josh Whitman. As an alum he would unite the fans and he has the greatest potential.

If we were to hire Sean Frazier, I think you do get the Wisconsin connection and Barry Alvarez would want to help him succeed - convince good football coaches to take a chance on turning things around here. Wouldn't be surprised if under this scenario Dave Doeren is our next coach.

Don't think Doeren would make the P5 switch. If Frazier has all those Wisconsin connections still, I'd be all aboard the Dave Aranda train. A well respected guy with a good resume, a unique and fun defensive identity, and some Midwest experience, to go along with some time at LSU now.

At this point, who don't we want. Who would be the 'here we go again' candidate? Just curious to hear people's perspectives...

The BOT, The Administration, anyone with the tag name "Interim". Those are people I don't want having anything to do with Illinois any longer. They are a bunch of losers who continue to make decisions that bring further embarrassment on the school. The hole continues to get deeper. We need leaders who will stop the nonsense surrounding the school, steady the ship, connect the dots that success in athletics goes hand in hand with success in academics, stop alienating alumni, and prioritize landing in-state kids again.

Basically we need people to understand they are running a big, giant elite public university and start acting like it.

Oh but you meant for AD? Hire Rick George or Craig Tiley and then hopefully let them do their job.

I'm told Frazier and Alvarez do not have a friendly relationship.

He would be the one that would make consider just being completely done. It would be an admission that the Guenther faction's of the University of East Central IL still runs the show.

As opposed to Guenther's young protege Josh Whitman or Guenther's shining example of his stewardship of non-revenue sports Craig Tiley or longtime donor to and advocate for Guenther's DIA Larry Lubin.

The Illinois AD Search Fan Fiction continues to produce a thrill a minute.

Tiley has at least had success elsewhere and left the Guenther admin on his own. He was a coach under Guenther yes, but wasn't involved in the day to day of the DIA. I get the argument though and completely see your point.

Whitman, Michael, Lubin.. bleh. BLEH.

If a bunch of angry money will only open their wallets for someone they know and trust, what choice have we?

Guenther's faults were mostly ones of personal temperament and attitude anyway.

I would advise that whichever Guenther-connected person we hire, wait until Guentheresque decisions start being made before throwing that comparison around willy-nilly.

Jim Tressel is not happening. I don't know who it will be, but I can assure everyone it will not be him.

+1. You want someone connected to the program that somehow isn't connected to RG? Good luck.

Let's hope the new AD learns from his predecessors mistakes, no matter his "connections"

I'm hopeful for someone by or before this Friday.

Will be excited to hear the introductory conference regardless of who it is. Going to be very important for the new person to set a strong tone off of the get-go.

Tressel was a cheater. Why would anyone want him as AD?

Wasn't George involved in some wrong-doings under Mike White? I know it was a long time ago. Not saying we should hold 30 year old infractions against someone, but glass houses/stones thing. Our distiguished university has a long history of stepping over the line from time to time. Of course, it appears that we get whacked very hard whenever we do. Who did we piss off at the NCAA anyway and how have they been there for so long?
