Yes, wonder why not Chicago?
I get that Indy is a bigger city, bigger airport (than CU I mean) and the ease of anonymity, but why not also play the "Illinois flagship" card and go to your state's biggest city?

Korn Ferry wanted to get out of Chicago on a business trip?

St. Elmos steaks are in season?

Just throwing out possibilities.

His first statement was hand wavy. Within a week or two his stance was much more firm.
Right. In late November George said he would be flattered to be offered the job but would decline and that he's staying in Boulder for the foreseeable future. Then in January, he said something like (I can't find the quote), some people around the Illinois program keep bringing up my name but that's not coming from me, I'm still not interested. To be any more clear in his denial than that would have forced him to be borderline insulting. As for those "George is still in play" rumors, it seems pretty obvious they have been nothing more than some well-placed people's pipe dream all along. I'm actually shocked that mainstream media folks like Tate and Tupper have been pushing that angle so long.

I hope Whitman isn't the leading candidate right now. Seems like a high ceiling guy but he is not a 4 or 5 star recruit. He is a guy who is a D-III AD and I'm not sure what he's done in that role to deserve a promotion to the majors other than be an alumni. To boot, he comes from the Guenther lineage which I'm very much against returning to unless the guy is a proven winner at the highest level.

Eh, I think there was still enough care that he could deny things. But I don't think he's going to be the guy anyway.

It wouldn't be the first time somebody in the business talked out of both sides of their mouth, that's for sure.

My overall point was more that it doesn't take this long to find out if somebody's interested. Having a quick process doesn't mean we couldn't swing for the fences with George or Tiley.

This is gonna be fubar by the time it's done.

That implies that FU constitutes something that is beyond all recognition at U of I. On the contrary, if things weren't totally FU, then I wouldn't recognize it (though I'd certainly be happy). It's really more of a snafu.

Away from any press that remotely cares. Easier to be discreet.

Exactly. Fubar for Illinois would be that they announce Ian McCaw as AD on Monday, and that McCaw is bringing Art Briles with him.

That's funny:) If you were interested in being discreet, why would you announce where you were going to be at all, no matter what city? Kind of goes against the grain of hiring a search firm to conduct a confidential job search. Let the flight tracking begin!

How in the world are you narrowing your list of candidates at this time. What are they doing. If you don't have a choice by now, these must be some pretty unimpressive candidates.

The real or impressive candidates would need a stable set of players above them. If a person like Tilley had a game plan in hand, when he first met with G, then I bet he has a plan in hand now. And, that plan must be relying on stability or some semblance of it. I very much doubt that any serious candidate would consider the situation above and even perhaps below him to be stable or desirable.

I would expect any candidate wanting this job to be considering it as a stepping stone. They will say otherwise and that is to be expected.

I tend to agree with this thought unfortunately. We're 8 days beyond the originally proposed timeline and just now the list is being narrowed? Yikes.

A friend of mine is in the industry, and he basically said no good candidate would ever take the Ilinois AD job because the AD's boss in also still interim (amoung other reasons). Why take a job when you don't see any stability or support above you. To me, that means it'll have to be someone getting the big raise to make the risk worth it.

Not Ideal...

This is really all you can expect in the absence of leadership that we have. Exactly why Cubit was the best option for the football program. Not saying I disagree with either the Beckman or Thomas decisions, but the timing is beyond comprehension

This thing didn't come apart in a day. And its not going to be put back together in a day. As bad as we are now in the two major sports, it is not as bad as the mid 70s. We got some real leadership in the athletic department, and by the mid-80s we were playing in the Rose Bowl and being robbed of a final four, and by the late 80s we were beating the football national champion with a guy that was supposed to be our second string QB, and had an iconic hoops team. The 80s started with the AD office (and ended with AD office). Its looking more and more like the new AD is going to have to make two major hires. We hire the right guy at AD and we will be back to competitive in 5 years. Hire the wrong guy, and give him a chance to prove his incompetence by bungling these two hires, and we have gone noplace.

No. No No No. Nope. Cubit was the worst option and nothing can change that.

We hire the right guy at AD and we will be back to competitive in 5 years.

While I do generally agree with this, it's just hard to make such a steadfast prediction. When Cubit hands over his emaciated roster to the next guy, it's going to be tough to win games, and once you start losing, it's difficult to turn the tide. We just have to hope the guys who are hired are up to the task. Otherwise, we're likely to be repeating the cycle in those 5 years.

Classic Illini. Basically have nobody and BOT needs to go.

Could not agree more. I love this university but it stinks from the top down right now. How this university can have a power vacuum at the top since August with no end in sight is ridiculous and embarrassing to the Illini Nation. We need leadership to right the ship on the university now. Then after you get that settled, you can turn your attention to athletics. As to the purported candidates who will get interviews and someone's comment that they are not a 4 or 5 star, I hate to say it but the lack of leadership in our university makes our university right now not a 4 or 5 star university or at least a place worthy of a 4 or 5 star athletic director. The fact that we hired a search committee and these are the names we have is another appalling waste of time and money for an administration seeking to cover their rear ends when they didn't know what to do. Don't get me wrong I hope we find a diamond in the rough but you have a better chance of hitting a home run with a top tier candidate who has had experience as an AD at a major university than hoping we get a winner from guys running departments at NIU, EIU, etc. Reminds me of the Bears always hiring as a head coach and hoping they will "grow" into the job. Or a certain "Large Midwestern University" hiring coaches for its "big time revenue producing sports" from the MAC. The University of Illinois need leadership to come in and right the ship and it has to be now or the university we all love, will continue its descent as an institution and as an athletic program.
