No one is leaving a P5 job for Illinois.

Well, when you don't actually pursue more than 1 person at a P5 program, and the only one you do meets your only prerequisite of "Ex Illini", of course no one is leaving for a job no one asks them about.

I haven't stated that Whitman was on the level of Tiley. Thanks for misrepresenting my post.

Sorry - didn't intend for it to sound like you were comping him to Tiley. My point is let's not compare Wash U.'s athletic department with Illinois' simply b/c Wash U. has had a lot of historical athletic success and an enrollment of 13,000. They aren't similar.

Any AD we hire will be risky. Ron Guenther was the ultimate insider AD hire and he had mixed results. Mike Thomas' was the ultimate outsider hire with an outstanding resume (two time AD of the year, excellent coaching hire track record) and he did a terrible job hiring coaches.

I am more than fine with a bet on Josh Whitman. In fact I'm enthusiastic about him. He's inexperienced but he is a 5 star human being that knows football. He will win or lose on his ability to upgrade the football facilities and hire a good football coach. Everything else is noise. I think he has as good a chance at being successful at that as any candidate that's been mentioned.

Again, outisde of Tiley and George, who meets all of your requirements? That would be only people coming from major sports organizations or Power 5 conferences. No one is leaving a P5 job for Illinois.

You don't think a deputy athletic director at P5 school would consider the Illinois job? What about a non-power 5 school's AD such as the University of Houston's Yuracheck who would be given the opportunity to double his OPEX.

I actually think we will learn a lot more about our job, by where Thomas ends up re-surfacing. If he gets a big name University relatively soon, then it will tell me that those on the outside understand about the politics of our job. ;)

Unfortunately I agree. When you looked at the leaked candidate list it was clear that the other candidates were there to fill the diversity requirements of the job search. This was always about bringing in an Illini guy.

Are you then saying that a Deputy Director at a P5 school has a higher floor than Whitman then? Maybe we are just arguing the minutiae for the sake of dialogue, or maybe because I am very much on the Whitman bandwagon, but all things considered, I'd take hyper-intelligence, Alumnus, lawyer, youth, charisma, NFL career before I'd take someone without that but P5 Deputy Director experience....all other things equal.

It isn't similar to Milliken or Wheaton either to which the comparison was made, not Illinois.

I get that. But this isn't the first time that it's been noted on this board that Wash U. has a larger enrollment than schools in the CCIW. I believe Illinois Wesleyan was the example used before. Reading between the lines it comes off as a justification of why Whitman has the relevant experience to be a P5 AD. If that's not your intent, then I apologize I mistook your post.

I think this is the thing that bothers me most. An Illini guy needed to be a desired trait rather than a pre-requisite. Once again, the administration intentionally limited their options. Maybe Whitman is the right guy at the right place at the right time. But it sure would have been nice to know that they at least took a thorough look around before deciding that.

Would not be surprised to see this happen.

Trouble is , the type of smart , dynamic , fresh faced country club guy who looks awesome in a blue blazer , white shirt & repp tie , that the donors would demand isn't leaving his job at Wake Forest or Vandy ( hypothetical examples ) or is waiting it out at SMU or UCF until that SEC or B12 job opens up.

Our job is a mess that only a native son could embrace .

I exaggerate , but you get the point .

How do we know this when the only ones we asked are native sons?

Not sure that is the case . Lots of times people are contacted thru back channels . No one wants it publicly known that your job , for whatever reasons , is a viewed as a dud by your peers . Just saying . We have no idea who was quietly contacted .

Chancellor Barbara Wilson just said they hope to announce a new AD by the end of the month...she said don't listen to media. Inaccuracies !

Chancellor Barbara Wilson just said they hope to announce a new AD by the end of the month...she said don't listen to media. Inaccuracies !

January 25th: "No announcement coming soon." -- Barb Wilson

February 8th: "Yes, announcement coming soon." -- Barb Wilson

February 11th: "No announcement coming soon. And don't believe the crazy media. They're all over the place with this thing! " -- Barb Wilson

Sounds like we decided to plunge down another rabbit hole. Hooray -- throw another 50 pages on the thread.

Is Florida Atlantic AD Patrick Chun still a candidate?

May be only one without Illinois prerequisite.

What does that even mean? Is something being front porch a saying? Of importance?

Killeen likes to say this. She borrowed it from him. It means sports is how a lot of people see the university. Like a lot of people only ever see the front porch if a house.

Korn Ferry search coordinators, Mr. Jeff Daniels and Mr. Jim Carey, had no comment on the University of Illinois' athletic director search in a statement issued today.
