Indiana 74, Illinois 47 POSTGAME

It must be bad when I look at the score, don't make a sound, and go back to what I was doing. That means I've gone past the point of anger to straight up apathy.

Ouch ! Worse yet, I can't feel my toes either. It must be freezing in here and I don't even know it. Damn

1. We won the first half. They won the second half. Basically, it was a draw. We did not cover the spread, however.

2. Yeah, it is about recruiting. You put Yogi Ferrell on our team, and we beat Indiana in this game. One player really can make a difference. To steal a quote from Loren Tate, with Yogi and four chem majors, you have a pretty good offense. (Loren actually made that statement about Craig Tucker, but it's really true about Yogi.)

3. In all seriousness, we actually did play very hard in the first half. It wasn't real pretty, but we played well. In the second half, it was like we just stopped playing by and large. It was ugly.

4. OK, JCL did play well. In the first half it meant something. In the second half, it was all we had even if it didn't mean anything.

5. Malcolm Hill had a totally forgettable game. I guess even Super Man needs a game off now and then.

6. There wasn't much else. Kendrick Nunn had a few nice plays, but overall he wasn't much of a factor. Mav had a few moments, but Finke seems to have hit quite a wall.

7. We got outrebounded 36 to 14. There's nothin' more to say. 36 to 14.

8. OK, I am going to beyotch about the refs. Those clowns out there tonight were ridiculously incompetent. Make up your damn minds about whether you are going to call fouls according to the directive or not. Guys for both sides were getting mauled on drives with no call, and then for a stretch it was touch foul time. At least we got in the required number of moving screen calls. I guess that's all the consistency we can hope for.

9. Well, maybe we can beat Minny. Other than that, it doesn't look so good the rest of the way.

Go Illini!

For those who were making excuse after excuse for JG and saying, "We've got to be happy that he's getting so close on so many good players because he'll get a few in time" can you finally admit that there was good reason to be upset and at some point (like now) it would really matter that he couldn't land a big or a PG?

Yep, we need a point guard desperately. We need our true post player desperately as well. We need Big Mike and Leron Black out there pulling down some boards and giving us an inside presence. We need the depth.
With that said, even without all that, we still need to be much better than the second half tonight.

That's really what you would say? So it would sound like you were quitting on the team and the job.

Probably not, but I have a very hard time spouting nonsense and baloney. We're done and he's done. Nice guys sometimes finish last.

He was an actor who called himself Iron Eyes Cody and passed himself off as Native American. He supposedly didn't want to do the ad because "Indians don't cry". Turns out he was Italian-American.

Okay, I remember hearing that he wasn't a Native American, but I didn't know all the rest...lol...that's interesting. I would have never guessed Italian-American.

Are there more posts on here about a 30 year old tv public service announcement than the game?

I get your point. But he's got to say something, and we've got people here waiting to mock whatever he says. My point is...what do you say that doesn't sound bogus at this point. I'm sure they are counting the days to get this nightmare over. Fans can quit, which many have. I've mentally checked out for the season, but they can't. He's got to keep answering the questions.
It's crappy all the way around, for us the fans, for the players, coaching staff...everyone.

Question for the board who is old enough to remember where that picture comes from. I am.

I'm 25 but am aware it's a no littering PA commercial but I'm in advertising.

On a side note, we're bad. A coach with a competent system in place should be able to keep that game close, injuries or not.

Illinois Basketball as an institution is a shell of it's former self, and that is an insult to shells. The injuries do not and should not let Groce off the hook for this season's performance. What went on in that locker room at halftime? They were beating an arch-nemesis and ranked opponent at home! And they turn in a 19-47 second half? I've had enough.

I have zero confidence that Groce can return Illinois back to the program it once was. Injuries or no injuries. I don't see our teams improve much once the season starts. We hardly ever win the second half of a game. Our in game adjustments are terrible.

Really embarrassing for Malcolm getting shut down, gotta feel for him and the team.

Aggravating to see Illinois products of Judson, Biefeldt, and Zeisloft on the opposing bench, as well.

We'll be back, but not this year...

Perhaps you take 100% of the blame? Say, "This is all on me! I need to be a better coach and get more out of my players!" I don't know that I've ever heard that from our coach, and I think it's time he accepts the responsibility of his position.

What is more worrisome than the game itself is Groce's post-game comments that we got a lot of good shots but they just didn't fall. What the what? Our offense looked absolutely putrid the ENTIRE game, save maybe the first 5 minutes. The offensive game plan is really pretty simple to defend, you have to be able to cover the initial on the ball screen and usually 1 or two screens in the paint or on the wing. The problem is that whoever isn't involved in the screen is usually just standing and watching. I bet you could count on one hand how many times someone on our team creates a good shot for someone else. To me, more than anything else, the offensive ineptitude we continue to show under Groce is the reason I have no more faith in his sales pitch.
