Indiana 74, Illinois 47 POSTGAME

They lost their 2 best players from last year, yet we returned our 2 best players from last year....(okay, maybe 2nd and 3rd)... Listen, I get where you are coming from. But there has to be a point in time where the excuses just don't work any more. I feel like we are at that point now. Maybe you don't. It's all subjective.

Injuries aren't excuses its fact not to mention our best defensive player is gone too.

Adding Abrams, Nichols, and Lucas to the team I watched tonight does not make this a tournament team... We would definitely be better, but not by enough to make this team much more than competent. This worries me greatly.

Then Sir you are clearly blind with a healthy thorne and black and those three we are clearly a tournament team .

With the mention of Nichols I believe he is referring to next season. Next season Thorne is gone and it's highly likely that Black will be dismissed from the team. The need for an impactful 5th year transfer to play the 5 next year is badly needed. The front line will still be paper thin and rebounding will continue to haunt this team unless Black is somehow allowed back and or the coaches are able to get a solid 5th year 5 to help a ton next year.

Well that was a fun second half. One thing I did not like is how Groce seemed to partake in the Backseat Coach crap ESPN was doing. Cream stayed focus while Grocr did not. I just said something nice about Crean so things are definitely not right.

We again were out coached right from the jump in the second half and really had no answers of any kind. When the lead went to 9 in the 2nd we pushed back, barely, twice and then just laid down. Team looked tired and Malcolm clearly started forcing in the second when he realized he was having a bad game but needed to take over to have a chance. We really were not running any effective offense at that point so it did not much matter.

I have liked Groce. I have been a believer that if given time he could succeed but it is getting harder to believe.

Never did I think (keep in mind, I'm only 24 so 2000-2006 was my sports coming of age) that being an Illini basketball fan would be this ... demoralizing. It's truly taking a toll on me personally. :tsk:

History and common logic says that Illinois basketball WILL be back ... but this is an insanely rough purgatory we've been in since that painful 2008 campaign that this is well on its way to beating for worst season of my lifetime...

http://247sports.com/Season/2015-Basketball/CompositeTeamRankings

2013 class: Illinois 21, Wisconsin 45
2015 class: Illinois 18, Wisconsin 47

While outside the original argument, here are the other class rankings:

2012 class: Illinois
2014 class: Illinois 52, Wisconsin 118

I see what your saying but numbers and rankings mean nothing if players aren't picking up the system , groce explains this every post and pre game pressers , bottom line the staff can't play the game for them if your not executing your losing.

He said with the team he watched tonight which thorne is on not black though , so a healthy thorne and them three we are a tournament team IMO

Should we just itemize the excuses into one post to save everyone time?

1. We just can't expect to compete with all of these injuries
2. The refs were horrible
3. We just couldn't hit shots
4. We just don't have the horses
5. It just wasn't our night

Did I miss any?

Do I detect some sarcasm or do you really feel the above had something to do with the end result?

1.

9. Well, maybe we can beat Minny. Other than that, it doesn't look so good the rest of the way.

Go Illini!

Oh, man. Please Penn State. I have tickets right in the middle of the season ticket holder section. I guess I should have gone over for Rutgers.

You did detect my sarcasm. If you want to know why I feel we really lost, you can find it over in the "John Groce at Illinois" thread;)

We've lost the first half by 54, the second half by 58 and we've won the overtime by 9.
Overall, terrible, but I don't see the second half as materially different.

Thanks for this. It's much better than I figured. Just seems the first 4-8 minutes out of every halftime we get annihilated.

Off memory, I think it was a bigger issue in the non conference season. I remember plenty of times coming out flat in the 2nd half. I thought we had pretty much shored up that problem until last night.

What was this "backseat coaching" deal? When I got home around the start of the 2nd half. My wife had the game on and saw this guy just on the court talking to the camera. I was like what is he trying to do? Run for State Rep? I couldn't hear him because my dog was barking. Anyway I wasn't a fan of it.

We will continue to be in the Big 10 basement if our team identity is a jump shooting team with no C or PG.

This whole team is getting tougher to watch. Don't kid yourselves and think this can get turned around in 1 year. We have to hit SEVERAL recruiting home runs to be competitive IMO

I hate EXPECTING to lose at home to Indiana, makes me feel dirty.

Not going to lie, these numbers are a bit surprising.

The only common thread is that we tend to go long sustained periods without scoring. We're usually the equal of a much better team for a good chunk of the game but then, and it doesn't matter whether this is first or second half, put together a long stretch of horrible possessions on offense and allow other team to hit 3s or get offensive rebounds, and suddenly the game is over.

I was struck during the game by just how often the Indiana player hit nothing but net and how often we clanged it off the iron. I honestly didn't think that their shots were that much better than ours, but they must have been. Not sure what the shooting percentages were, but the practical difference was night and day.

Anyone with more basketball experience than this fan have a comment on that?

Confidence vs. fleeting confidence when we miss a couple, and also fatigue....JMO.

Abrams will make a difference. I've never seen Lucas or Nichols play, so I don't know. We need help down low with rebounding and a low post scoring threat, I do know that.

At least ESPN was trying to broadcast a game telecast a bit differently. I give them props for the experiment.

I thought it was pretty neat. I wish at some point JG would have taken the microphone and done commentary and let Dakich yell at these guys for a while. Maybe he would have shocked some life into them...or drawn up a play that they would actually run.

How much worse could it have been?

Indiana has a Top 10 offense. In the second half, they made shots. We missed them. That was the difference in the game. Did you see some of the step-back 3's that Yogi made? He was ridiculous in the 2nd half.

I thought the team battled hard and I didn't see any quit in them. At this point in the season, that is what I'm looking for.

Big turning point was when Finke missed a WIDE open 3 that would of cut the lead to 5. Instead, Indiana hits a 3. Nunn had an awful turnover for a Yogi lay-up, then Yogi hits another 3 to put them up 16. Ball game over. :tsk:
